Just watched the game and I thought we looked really composed on defense. Barnett may not bend the line very much but his line speed on defense is a thing of beauty. Niukore off the bench worked really well. Thought Metcalf has the the number 6 but TMM did have some nice touches. We need to stop with the leg pulls. The NRL has said they will crack down on it but we just kept on doing it.

Jazz looks to have played himself out of the 17. Likely would replace him with Ale. Leiataua had some good moments but he needs to stop just trying to go over the top of players all the time. RTS looks like he can play anywhere he is just that good and Capewell is class.

Dolphins defense was pretty shocking. 6 tries and none from kicks. With D like that they will not make the 8. Overall good hit out for us and barring injuries there is no reason we cannot make the top 4 this season.

The key for as with any premiership contender is going to be injuries.

It seems pretty obvious we have improved and so a good run of injuries should see us comfortably top 4, in fact we should be eying a top 2 finish really.
Definitely….injuries are a threat to any teams contention. An added layer for us in particular are those bastard refs.

Absolutely no way to Roger at FB. How long has it been since we’ve had 1 let alone nearly 2 strike centres? And now we finally have one, people want to move him to FB? Madness.

Montoya and RTS is going to be the #1 wing and centre pairing this season. On both sides of the ball. Montoya nearly killed a bloke yesterday and RTS put the shot on like 3 dudes. I haven’t even started on the big don’t argues BOTH players posses. Some poor bloke is going to get fended by both in one play this year.

Bye to Jazz and Lussick. I’d rather CHT play 14.

Jazz will not go without a fight!

One last thing on Egan. That try to Barnett, Barnett ran a beautiful line at pace and Capewell made a great bust and quick play the ball but fuck that pass from Egan to Barnett was deadly. Deception and a crisp pass right on point.
His ruck deception is lethal. He's got the no-look pass down to an art. He can fein left and pass right to Johnson for that sweep play. He's the one creating the overlap on the edge and is the reason Dallin scores so often. Forget top 3 he is the 9 with the best pass in the game. We win nothing without him.

Some more notes on the RTS / Montoya combo.

I don’t think Montoya gets enough credit for his dedication to absolutely belting cunts on his edge. Let’s be real, at least twice a game he’s absolutely leveling a ballplayer who takes it to the line. Now with Roger, there’s two absolute Hulks who can smash you from any angle on that channel.

It should be shaping up for a shut down edge. It worked sometimes with Pompey, but it’s on another level with RTS on the inside. Trust is a beautiful thing. Add in Metcalf and just watch the counter attack opportunities open up after players cough the ball up after being chopped in half.

I also feel Metcalf is a bit like Egan. Possessing great raw technical skills that can be lacking in the NZ system. If he can kick on and apply it to our game he’ll be a beast.

I like his body shape for this year. Put on a bit of upper body bulk without looking like a Mr Universe.
Metcalf has had an awesome off season and is over a serious injury.
He could be a great attribute for us this year. Hopefully he remains free of injury and that goes for the rest of the guys

Had been really impressed with Lussick but felt like yesterday he stayed on the player too long and had a lot of negatives in his performance. Early on and was the fittest at the club early preseason so hopefully keeps developing. Think if Roache can show he can defend in the middle in nsw cup, he could leapfrog Lussick being that he’ll have utility factor also as showing he’s looking good at dummy half.

Actually I hope JAZZ goes into the NSW and get put in the hooker role as thats one place I could see him come back into the fold ..as that could be an area we could see injuries affected FG depth

The Jazz to hooker experiment is long dead and should stay dead. They put him there because they understandably loved his attitude and wanted to fit him in somewhere but it's painfully obvious he doesn't have the quick decision making required to operate at hooker. For me he's destined to be the NSW cup side's Walker this year as Walker does everything he does, just better.

Bye to Jazz and Lussick. I’d rather CHT play 14.
Regarding CHT to 14, one advantage is that it would clear a log jam of halves wanting to play NSW cup at half. I hope I have explained that point well. If CHT is not in the 17 or at least 18th man then you have TMM, CHT, Farr, Hansen vying for two half spots in the NSW cup team. I really doubt that they factor that into who makes the 17 who is our 14, but it would be a small side advantage.

Bench becomes
CHT covers dummy half, the halves, full back, kind of centres as well.
Walker
Niukore
Bunty

A very experienced bench. Webster has mentioned in an interview CHT has a chance at the utility role on the bench and said he saw him playing lock if needed as well.

As we work through these bench permutations and as I read everyone's posts it is starting to seem gloomy for Jazz starting in the 17 for round one. Give an injury or two and he will be back in no doubt and is guaranteed to get 15 plus games in first grade as a result.
