General 2024/2025 Halves Discussion

Okay, I'll bite. we go 9 - 15 this season. What does your halves look like next two years?

I am very interested to see the team names for the next trial .
Hopefully AW uses it to get our best 6 and 7 sorted for Vegas.
I would have LM at 6 and give Boyd and TMM 40 minutes each to impress.

People say we are stacked in the halves department having the 4 we have, better than most clubs. But I would rather The Bum Raiders 4 halves over ours!

Again, if we are relying on Metcalf, then the club has taken a huge punt! I hope it works out.

None of our halves are first picks in thier respective positions!

Agreed Surely/hopefully Luke's injuries bad luck is behind him

I’m not sure people are saying it as a positive.
We are stacked having 4 halves that on the mid tier, maybe lower.
Thats why there is so much debate as no one sticks out - Probably LM.
I am optimistic there is a combo that could work though.

I don't think that is fair as it is a multi dimensional position.

I will go two things
1) Try assists
2) Positional Kicking

to be able to control the game.
to be able to be competently kick.
to be able to dictate to the team what exactly what he wants for the plays.
to be able to create plays for the team.
has a strong desire to win and to do everything he can to make that happen.

LM or Boyd are the only viable options at 7.

That's where I getting to, I personally think Boyd is our halfback and Metcalf our five eight.

It's the perfect combo of kicking game, game awareness when it comes to tight finishes and the running game that Metcalf is best at!

We need Metcalf and CNK hunting around our forwards, especially if Vaimauga is bringing an offload.

This is Metcalf in 2017 as sharks sg ball halfback. You could hear Barnett say after the trial against sharks that he’s a student of the game and listening to him here at a young age, it’s evident even back then. If anyone listened to the interview with Metcalf after the sharks game the other day, I think you could almost lock it in that Metcalf is going to be given the halfback role. He kept going on about the aura of the jersey

Potentially. Boyd is a bit of an unknown. Will be interesting to see how much gametime he gets and where. Though i think the club is pretty happy and settled with Metcalf at halfback to atleast start the year(irrespective of how much grunts inruin lets out in disapproval).

What do our halves look like next season if TB7/LM6 go 6-18 this year?

I'm only concerned about this season and what gives us the best chance of winning and we are in agreement that TMM 7 gives us more chance of wins

Next season is next season. Players could do an acl, tear a hammy, get homesick, retire....

The only 1st grade half with any continuity that AW has is Metcalf. Which considering his half stocks, is probably the wisest decision.

I think you have forgotten Walker, his distribution around the ruck is snappy and lead to a try on Friday.

Compelling argument mate. Not sure what you mean by Boyd is a bit of an unknown though. Plenty enough history there to make a judgement on.

He is a bit of an unknown in the warriors system. We do not know if he was brought in to take a starting spot or provide depth/cover. How has he been performing behind closed doors? Has he been impressing the club over the other halves options at the club? Hard to rate him when he hasnt played for the team yet, and given us any output in Warriors colours especially in how the club plays him.

TMM we have seen enough. He struggles to play 5/8 and often goes missing and you want to distract him from dreaming about catching fish mid game to make him the main playmaker.

I don't want Metcalf bogged down by having to get us around the park and take away from his natural talents.

It would be far easier to give that to Boyd, and use metclaf as a strike weapon.

For me it's want a halfback that can kick, long and short.

At 7 a playmaker that provides attacking stats which gives us the best chance of winning, a solid short kicking game for repeat sets and try assists, and is a competent defender. A long kicking game would be nice but can be compensated by a kicking 6 as the bulldogs do with Burton.
