General Mt Smart Stadium

The last few years there have been comments from Auckland Rugby who have an interest in Eden Park saying it isn't financially viable for them to use. That says a lot about that stadium.
  • It won't be able to fund itself
  • If the parties that have an interest in the Eden Park Trust don't find it viable. How is it going to be viable for other teams like the Warriors. When there was discussions on moving the Warriors it was stated the club would need to increase their average capacity. That isn't exactly a great incentive for a club to move. In Sydney to get the Olympic Stadium used they made it beneficial for the clubs.
A central city stadium will have similar challenges in terms of making the stadium viable. But a modern facility will be more appealing to spectators, the city should be better to get to and from via public transport, it will also be closer to restaurants and bars after matches or concerts.

A modern stadium configuration with the tiers being closed off for smaller events should also help with making it viable for the different codes. It would staffed for each configuration. They probably can do that for Eden Park to a certain extent but the tenants often complain about the extra staff needed when they use Eden Park.
They are also learning from central London stadiums like Stamford Bridge and Craven Cottage (which have hotels etc in the complex to generate 24/7 revenue).

Warriors, Blues, Auckland Rugby, Auckland FC, All Blacks, Kiwis, All Whites - there'd be a game every weekend too (plus concerts).

Dunno what happens to Eden Park or cricket though
Cricket would have to move somewhere else. Not sure where as that leads to other sports having to move if they redevelop Western Springs for example.

Eden Park long term maybe housing, hotels, apartments.

Short term hire a few giant wrecking balls and charge people $50 to get a few wings at demolishing part of the stands.

They have given speed way at western springs a one year reprieve for next season.

Then I think theirs an appetite to turn Springs into a full time concert venue.

I use to live reasonably close to Western Springs. A few kilometres away but it was still a reasonable walk. I could hear the cars when there was an event on. Not to the point it was annoying, more background noise.

I like it as a concert venue. Park close to my old place and walk down the road.

I hope the speedway people get a good venue. Getting grief about noise when the stadium has always been there is a bit harsh. For the stadium juggling they have been used as a pawn like the Warriors.

Definitely got to feel for the speedway - they've been there so long & the people buying houses, complaining and taking legal action to get them out is nasty.

But Springs is a good asset for the council and could be used a bit better for the wider community rather than speedway.

Complicated issue.

Nothing has changed.
The pink gin guys from the Trust will be loving their gins tonight.
Time to divide and conquer. Sign off for the three new stands and roof to Eden Park but only if the neighbours agree to more concerts per year and ONLY if the EPTB agree to it being made a rectangular stadium which couldn't host cricket games.

These guys have so many perks. Unbelievable.

And how is it going to be paid for considering they talked about the financial side of proposals being a key consideration?

I know there would be an uproar but there is one very easy way to fund a new stadium in Auckland. $750,000,000 for a stadium divided by 540,000 houses in Auckland is just under $1,400 per house. Put a $70 levy on everyone's rates bills per quarter for the next 5 years and you've got a brand new, debt free downtown Stadium plus hotels, offices and apartments.

Another way is for the District Plan to be changed and the ancient Law that governs the management and usage of Eden Park to be changed so that EP #2 can be sold and developed. EPTB could even make the land leasehold so it generates an income for them.

What is your thoughts about units/hotel options for EP #2.
Some NRL Clubs are going down that track for suburban grounds.
Gold Coast did it many years ago with shops and gyms etc

I think it should be developed.... it would provide an additional revenue stream for the EPTB which could be used to develop Colin Maiden park into a cricket ground similar to Hagley Oval.

Or EPTB sell Eden Park and become a joint venture stake holder in the new downtown stadium…
