Boats n Hoes nah, the criticism isn't about where he tackled, it's about where he is on the field and who he is marking. He's played with Berry enough to know he can trust him. Mark your winger please.
Have you just purposely ignored the fact it was a 4 on 3 overlap or what? Berry isnt even marking his man!

Once Paps got on the outside of Barnett none of SJ, Rocco, or DWZ we're going man on, if SJ doesnt hold Paps goes straight through!

This means Rocco and DWZ have to hold as well.

Jesus basic edge defence tbh, which they actully did really well because they were all on the same page once the overlap was created and recovered in time barring a gazelle like leap.

I understand I am slowing it down and just a spectator, but after paps passed, it was 2 on 2. DWZ only had eyes on the center and when he passed, Coates had 1-1.5m on DWZ. This is what DWZ is used to and how he has defended ALL the time last year and let in many tries.

Overall I think the defense for this play was correct by everyone except for DWZ. First frame DWZ is on the outside of his winger, then by the 2nd frame he's already on DWZ's outside.

I'm not blaming DWZ for this loss, just for this one play. We lost because we played a shithouse first half and panicked with 3.5minutes to go after RTS played the ball badly.

DWZ was a weakest link and will continue to be
I mean, he still made the tackle. But Coates just scored one of the freakiest tries ever. 6ft4 with a 7 foot wing span lol. No one else scores that and we say good tackle Dwz. Dallins hit ups were awesome, Scored twice.
Dwz has his moments on d. His mate on the other side you praised is just as bad sometimes.
Calling the 2023 DallyM winger of the year the weakest link is a bit OTT.

In the 2nd pic Berry has been beaten to the edge and is recovering. DWZ released when he saw the recovery.

It wasnt 2 on 2 after Paps passed because he had a lead runner off his shoulder which meant it was actually 3 on2 and that lead runner worked its desired purpose of holding Berry in, hence why you see Berry at absolute full stretch trying to recover (to which amazingly he actually does). Plus also remember these are stillshots, what u dont see there is those Storm outsides are moving at full speed onto the ball, while Rocco and DWZ are at holding pace first and then have to haul ass to recover hence why Coates is on the outside of him last frame.

But the point is there's a reason why that whole edge wasnt marked man on, and that reason was the 4 on 3 overlap created once Paps got on the outside of Barnett. To say DWZ shouldve have always been on Coates is just blantantly wrong and ignores everything that happens further infield.

Like i said barring maybe a higher point of contact on Coates that edge defended really well in that instance......they stuck to their stuctures.

This is not in relation to DWZ, but people really need to stop using Dally M 'x' of the year as some sort of yardstick.

If you watch the games and then look who the votes go to before they go behind closed doors the whole thing is beyond cooked.

The voting can be so wrong you'd be forgiven for thinking the judges didn't even watch the games they are giving points on and just vote off reputation.

He made the RLPA Dream Team last year so it wouldn't be a stretch to call him RLPA Winger of the year instead.

I think it was two on two, however Reimis Smith done a great job with his speed and the angle he was running towards the corner, DWZ had to be in position incase Smith got past Berry with that line, that run alone had to have DWZ ready to move in.

Notice Smith catches the ball in line with where Berry was, directly infront but a couple meteres seperating them, he was already running onto it, Berry was somewhat moving but not at Smiths speed to the point Berry had to run sideways towards the touch line to get to him (possibly because of the lead runner you metioned), DWZ seeing that was basically left in a 50/50 situation on who and where to go for.

If Coates didnt take off and morph into Michael Jordan, DWZ gets him into touch.

I think we defended that last try the best we possibly could and got a hell of alot closer to defusing it than many other teams legit the only reason they scored at the end of that play was Coates signing with Nike to release a pair of Air Coates

Papenhuyzens just passed the ball.

How many players on his outside? 3

How many players on the outside of SJ? 2

And apparently to some there was no overlap? Plus that lead runner has done his job of holding Rocco just enough before he can release.

These guys defended really well to even recover.

You've got SJ, Berry, DWZ & Tuaupiki defending Panehuyzen, Chan?, Smith and Coates. Could argue Tuaupiki could have been closer but the ball always travels faster but he's still there abouts

Storm played amazingly well in that last 5 minutes or so. The plays leading up to that last try stretched us as well. Freakish try to win it. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and admire the skill

Just well constructed plays involving players with x factor i think. If your sticking to your structure and teams score outside those structures like that so be it, its when your not sticking to those structures youve got problems.

Quite right both those Paps tries were obviously planed, went wide, threw a couple of decoys to hold up the line (to which i thought both times we handled pretty well and were still sliding across) both times targetting our second rowers (Capewell and Ford defending inside our halves). In the end they we're just too slick with some nice hands (especially that 2nd one from Katoa), then if you've got x factor speed like Papenhuyzen does and the timings good.....then they'll break any defence down, dont think we did anything necessarily wrong.

The Coates one i think you need to look at what happened before they spread it (cant remember the play before hand) but Paps got on the outside of Barnett (thats a bad mismatch for us) and it ended up being a 4 on 3 which is why Rocco and Dallin we're holding.....i actually think they did really well there to recover (a few seasons back we wouldve had players jamming in all over the place and getting caught for numbers basically anytime a team spread the ball on us)......we recovered Dallin got to his man......just unfortunate he turned into the fucking olympic high jump champion.

Think we just take our medicine and tip our hat to some good and freakish plays from the opposition there.
Sharp analysis - on point.

When it takes the try of the year, probably the best corner try ever scored (it is up there with Manu carrying four defenders over the line) to beat a team, you know that team is bad ass.

I keep thinking how the Muss and pretty boy CNK, Egan too, would have watched that second half and thought fuck me....we are awesome...wait till I get back.

I bet Webster was thrilled about the second half and came away from last night even more confident that he can win this comp.

My lasting memory of this game will be the arrival of Taine Tuaupiki, the way he turned defence into attack against the best Melbourne had was world class.

Berry is becoming a world class center. He has proved that his tip ons are no fluke, they are an actual tool in his kit, and when you have a winger like Dallin that is the Center you want on the three quarter line.

Another important milestone last night was that left edge constructing a try purely off their own work, Roger running good lines, Metcalf firing a hell of a pass to Montoya who hit it like he was on the training paddock at Mt Smart, opposition coaches would have sat up seeing a Warriors left edge start to pull some surgical shit.

Webster just needs to keep being a genius, the rest of us just need to believe.

I believe, fuck me, first time since nineteen ninety five that I REALLY believed we have great club.

Yeah we lost to a desperate Storm and it hurt, but that hurt is gone from my heart because for the first time in a long time the Warriors were hunting the Storm and giving them a hiding for a half of footy.

Brother im more confident than ever after that 40 minutes of footy (well 38 i suppose) in which we dominated a very good team that even made the Premieres look ordinary last week, we'll be there or thereabouts.

Barring the loss this was similar to me to the Sharks game last year and we just build from here. Gutting loss but that performance should give the boys confidence moving forward (which im pretty sure was what Shaun wouldve been re-iterating at the end there), and as u know confidence to a Warriors team makes us a dangerous outfit.
