SJ has been a little off all year imo. TMM was engaging the line at 6 previously but getting very little ball and not a lot of it was quality. Seems to be a much better distribution of possession and an understanding of when each of them should have the ball between TMM and CHT. Both sides of the field are getting opportunities currently.

Side note: has SJs calf/hamstring/Achilles injury an extension of the injury he had in the finals last year and just hasn't fully recovered at all?
There have also been comments made that could be directed here or else could be misconstrued? When SJ was initially out with his injury however many weeks ago, I can recall Webster making a comment along the lines of we won’t be doing what SJ wants, and furthermore I can’t stop thinking about the robotic comment from TMM yesterday and where it was directed? Could SJ be overriding the coaches instructions?

Depends what older guys you’re talking about? DWZ and Barnett I would class in heading in that direction age wise. More than comfortable with what they’re producing. Capewell, better but still could need time to settle into a new system? Ford isn’t old, but I’m struggling with his consistency. CNK has fallen off a cliff in the last fortnight
DWZ and Barney have lost speed, not hunger or desire. That’s why I criticise Webbys use of Barnet but not him.

Capewell is fast sliding down the depth chart. Ford just need to play a starting mobile prop role. It’s forcing Tofu into the team that throws off the forward rotation.

There is a very strange case to be made, and very strange indeed, for letting SJ and Tohu play out the season and making next yeat our run at the premiership and releasing them both in the off season.
We aren't winning the premiership this year. So just let them play to honour them but tell them soon it is their last year and just choose to flag this season.
I think that would be a strange approach but it is an option.
I get it but to me it’s a weak mindset. Legacy should mean nothing in selecting a team. Best player in each position to give the best chance to win!!

I don't know if we can jump that far. My thinking is that he or AW have just taken the 'if we do these things, we should win' philosophy too far. It is noticeable the variation we have with TMM and CHT in the halves together. Also seeing us playing what's in front of us. We moved the ball wide in our own half a couple of times that stretched the defence and got us yardage.

I just feel that you need a mix of both structure and heads up play and we had gone way too far one way

What about CNK? Has he lost speed, hunger or desire?

Another comment from TMM last night was Webster said if we do these basic things, we win. In TMM’s case he made comment that they didn’t do these things as well as he would have liked but good enough to get the win. What I like about TMM leading, he’s very honest and measured

He’s heading the Tohu direction fast. While I love him using his body like a battering ram, all those knocks and hits on the body are finally taking its toll on him.

The same can be said about Egan. These guys have given great service to the team and club. Forever grateful but Father Time is now collecting early on due debts.

That'll do it.
We had to beat the Broncos without their Origin players. To do it comprehensively puts some mana back into the team.
Our attack looks good. Defence was OK. And surely we have found our halves.
Good times 😃
There's nothing like a walloping to wake up to reality. Well played guys but obviously we need to stay positive.

It’s not just the halves play. It’s the 1 percenters that SJ/Tofu aren’t up to doing.

That try that CHT stole, he came from nowhere, ball hawking and sprinted in and got his hand on it. HUNGER & SPEED. Which is exactly what Beastmode Beastmode is saying the older guys are lacking. Which is 100% true.
I thought it was good hustle from CHT initially when he scored that, but then I looked at the replay and where he came from, how many players he ran past to get there and good just doesn't cover it. Real hunger and desire to compete for everything.

I think TMM has been played in the wrong position most of his career. He should have always been a 7. His best year prior to his injury break was at the cowboys, when JT go injuried for the year and TMM lead them to the GF. He’s always been him, just hasn’t been given the keys to a team until now.

I get what Webby is trying to do with SJ and robotic Panthers style of play. If you can perfect it, it’s the best chance of long term success. If you are not perfect though it all turns to shit. We are not the Panthers and never will be.

Among the brilliance there have always been question marks over SJs kicking game being eyes up. It improved in the second half of his career, but I don't think he has ever had the time on the ball or vision of someone like DCE or Reynolds.

His strength early days was his elusiveness and in the mid-end career his ability to put players around him in space with ball in hand (which I think he was 2nd to none at doing).

Overriding instructions could be one take. For me it is that lack of time and vision to do what is in front of him through a fixed mindset to a gameplan that worked in 2023.

Certainly seems that's correct
SJ at 7 and TMM at 6 didn't work at all .
TMM at 7 and CHT at 6 is great.
For what ever reason but finally..

The two Origin guys were good. Especially Barnett.

DWZ was good coming back from injury.

Lussick was good late in the game. The coaching staff probably would argue he's closing out the game. You can counter that with we are playing with 16 until they feel comfortable.

The starters all made big metres. The games we lose the stats are typically way down. The start I though AFB, Barnett, Niukore and Walker were good.
I was expecting to see a fresh Lussick replacement for Egan earlier and was proved right.

The robotic style of play only works if you have gun explosive forwards and outside backs like they have to convert possession and field position.

I don’t think we should be questioning the hunger of guys like SJ and Tohu. They want to win a prem for this club more than anyone else on the planet.

It’s just that both have been battling chronic injuries that have impacted their training and performance all year. At that age, being on limited training takes an edge off your game, and playing through pain is unsettling. We saw what these guys could do when fully fit last year; this year they just haven’t been fully fit.

If they didn’t have the hunger they would likely have pulled up stumps by now, or taken extended rehab periods rather than fighting on.

Is injury your euphemistic way of saying old?
