NRL Round Discussion NRL Round 1, 2025 Discussion

50 missed tackles for tigers and 44 for Warriors with 28 ineffective. That’s an area both teams need to do much better, is it a fitness issue? Raiders had 21 missed tackles against us. I wonder if an issue for Warriors was that we played well under strength teams in trials? Particularly the second one against storm and it hasn’t given us a better indication of where we we were at?
I reckon it is fitness related. You look at that second half and the tigers were gassed from the get go

The low points conceded in the trials would have been nice to carry into the NRL. Our first trial wasn't great for both sides. The second one was an understrength side as it was the Storms first trial and most sides play a stronger side in the second trial.

The Vegas sides have to play a week early to get their week off to travel. Then the week off after to travel back from Vegas. The trials could have been scheduled better with the Vegas sides playing each other both weeks. The Panthers I think had a bye due to uneven amount of teams in the competition so the scheduling wasn't great there. But also it didn't affect them.

Let's hope our defence was from getting run ragged and the game being a lot faster. A lot is made of the Vegas surface and dimensions leading to a faster game. Not being up to it fitness wise means you are playing catch up. Something we can't afford as like last year I can see the teams confidence will wane as the season progresses. Meaning we will get further into a hole which I'm not sure we could turn around later in the season.

I think you are right.First thing to go when fatigue sets in is concentration.Slipping off tackles & dropped ball
My old team that used to happen but also guys would get pissed and want to start a fight. Now that I'm older and done some boxing for fitness and watch a lot of boxing and MMA I see that as even dafter now. Fighting gets you tired quickly so not a good idea if you are gassed.

Back then me and all of the younger guys would be trying to calm them down so we could work our way back into the game.

Not sure if I'm just getting more cycnical as I get older but this has been a mighty underwhelming start to the season.

Some pretty bloody average league played across the first 5 games.
Think panthers vs sharks has easily been the best game so far for standard of play and either team in a winnable position throughout the game. Broncos have been the most impressive with attack show, but still hard to know where the oppositions are at to know how impressive the performance has been. I’m going to go for an upset and eels to knock over storm finishing their unbeaten start to season since 2001

I think this has been happening for a few years now. Personally, I think the last thing that the NRL needed was expansion. As much as it is nice to see the historically dominant teams struggle, the NRL needs 6 or so teams that are truly elite, and then 5-6 really battling it out for the 8. The last few years has seen 2-3 dominant teams, 3-4 cellar dwellars and the rest a much of a muchness. In some ways this is good, but I'd argue that it is due to the quality coming down and the majority of teams being that usual battle for the 8 level of average.

The lack of quality halfs coming through is the biggest canary in the coal mine. The Dylan Brown situation is a classic.

I think that the NRL is facing a bit of a crisis with the threat of players like Ponga heading to union. They can't afford to lose the cream right now.
