Matt Lodge to dragons on a train and trial deal

St George Illawarra are set to hand Matt Lodge an NRL lifeline with the prop expected to agree to a train and trial deal with the Dragons.

The Dragons have been craving out for an experienced middle and have flirted with the prospect of signing Lodge all pre-season. That now looks like it will eventuate with Lodge set to arrive on a train and trial contract with the prospect of a top 30 deal on the table.

Lodge had been linked to a move to South Sydney but that deal did not eventuate. Instead, the Dragons are now the most likely destination for Lodge and they will become his third club in as many seasons and his sixth NRL side.

Manly were keen to retain the 29-year-old but on a reduced wage. He instead opted to test the open market as he looks to add to his 121-game career.

The Dragons do have a top 30 roster spot open with the club having 29 contracted players. They are keen to keep that door ajar to land another player externally but they may use their final roster spot to upgrade Lodge.

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan knows Lodge during his stint as an assistant coach at Manly before he took on St George Illawarra’s top job last year.

Lodge has experienced train and trial contracts before. He signed one when he originally joined Manly midway through the 2023 season from the Roosters before having a top 30 deal last year.

Train and trial players earn $1200 per week. They will pocket $3000 per first grade game they play, however they’re ineligible to be picked until round 11 — unless they win NRL approval.

Lodge played nine games for Manly last year after making his way back from a season-ending knee injury in 2023.

If Lodge is given a top 30 deal he would push for a round one bench spot at the Dragons.

This young guy is highly regarded as a fullback coming through but isn’t happy at titans being asked to play centre. Could be on the move

Just further on this guy, apparently on daily telegraph Jaylan De Groot is second fastest in the nrl behind Jason Saab

Bit of a rumour Lachlan Galvin has rejected the extension tigers put in front of him. Signed until the end of 2026 anyway, tigers were trying to secure him being he’s from the eels and was talk roosters would chase him. He’s with Isaac Moses and apparently roosters don’t like to deal with him. Certainly something eels fans are talking about at the moment

Tigers cannot afford to lose him.
This kid is a generational talent imo.
Makes it difficult signing Luai for such a large contract but they need to find a way.

He’s apparently an eels tragic growing up and was with them but they let him go. Wouldn’t it be the way for tigers to have a promising player and recruit well and all of a sudden he’s wanting a release. Agree they’ll need to find a way because I think he goes from $250k this year to $350k next year and I’d say he could get much more than that

If he goes to the Eels then it will be interesting as to what happens with Brown.

Lodge making a mess of things for himself. Had a train and trial deal at dragons but wanted a top 30 contract and told see ya
He hasn't played many games in his last 8 seasons at all. One of those seasons he got to double digits with 12 games. His onfield performance isn't massive and off field he seems like a distraction. Does he have an overinflated view of himself or what? Is he allowed to play in England with his history?
