General Mt Smart Stadium

Can see this happening. They have been pushing for upgrades for the last few years which is around 10 years after the big upgrades for the 2011 World Cup.

There will be some excuse like needing modern technology to keep up with stadia around the world or a specific stand needs upgrading or something.

Some of the articles it looked like the decision was going to be made this year and be Eden Park. There will be something wrong with any central city based proposal that will make it too hard. The cost, the land availability. It will cost more in 10 years.

They make it seem like they are being left out. Every time there is plans for moving sports to different grounds they end up with a proper shaped purpose built ground. Sure, the capacity is going to drop which likely means less chance of hosting a world cup semi final. They don't come around too much to justify it. Better a smaller stadium full with a better atmosphere for the majority of games.

Eden Park teams have to set weird field placements for the short boundaries due to the weird shape.

NZ Rugby you would think would be the ones holding on. The All Blacks haven't lost there in 20+ years. They are the main people filling the stadium and even they see moving on would be a wise move.
ABs record goes all the way back to 94 albeit could be under threat from the Boks this year.
Cricket can’t fill a stadium so shouldn’t really have a say on Eden park, the fact they still use it despite its embarrassing size is another factor

So are we backing the Boks so that record isn't used to justify Eden Park?

Of course this clown of a CEO wants to pinch Warriors and AFC games.

Eden Park has been massively unsuccessful in trying to cultivate any atmosphere or culture at their games, so they're desperately trying to prove their worth by importing it from Mt Smart.

You know why Warriors games sell out? Because it's a great product. You're close to the pitch, you're able to be rowdy, there's easy parking, and fans know they're going to have a good time.

Eden Park has none of those things. Shit view, shit facilities, parking is a pain, and if you so much as clap too enthusiastically you'll be shushed (or turfed out).

Apologies for the rant but as soon as I heard him mention the Warriors I got heated. Piss off and take your soulless stadium with you.

My wishful thinking is that Sautner is hearing that Eden Park "2.1" may not be getting the nod over the Quay Park proposal. Now, he's throwing hail marys—putting his hand up for Eden Park to be the home ground of the Pasifika bid that came out last week, saying the Warriors should play there part-time.

Rumour from an ex Warriors player;
2 more years at MSS and then onto Eden Park - quote whilst drinking at Full Time Bar.
Hopefully it's with an eye to eventually moving to the new downtown stadium.

Although I see why they'd prefer Eden Park 2.1 to Mt Smart, as much as I don't like it. With all the sell outs over the last 3 years, it's to be expected they want to expand

Dunno if i'd be keen on keeping my membership if that's the case. Always found the view and atmosphere at Mt Eden to be leagues behind Mt smart. Would still go to a few games a year of course but for the most part viewing from home or a bar would just be better. Also going from sharing with Auckland FC for a few weeks vs sharing with the blues all season seems stupid imo. I could foresee a change to have some home games there if they are truly hungry for money.

Auckland FC will be at Western Springs in a few years anyway. I wonder what the future will be for Mt Smart 🤔

I do hope there is a little bit of Chinese whispers going on, and the Warriors are moving, but to the new downtown stadium.

I like your new better than the other one.

It would also be better if it was moving in a few years as the new stadium is finished. The way it will probably go will be move to Eden Park temporarily and then an issue holds up the new stadium.

I think warriors mgmt want warriors games at eden park they bought a bar/pub in Mt eden
The bar is in Kingsland, ironically closer to Eden Park than Mt Eden is.

I would be so disappointed if they moved to Eden Park. I get that they need to make hay while the sun shines, but give me 25k at Mt Smart over 35k at Eden Park any day. Having 15-20k empty seats every week would be depressing, if I wanted to see that I'd go to the Blues.
