📝 Summary:

The thread centers on New Zealand's upcoming election, primarily debating the economic management and policy differences between the center-left Labour government and center-right National/ACT opposition. Key criticisms target Labour's fiscal stewardship, citing ballooning government expenditure #7#272, housing unaffordability, and unfulfilled promises like KiwiBuild and dental care expansion #16#12. A user #7 highlighted Labour's annual 9% spending growth versus 1.5% under previous governments, arguing this fueled inflation. National's tax-cut policy faced scrutiny over funding gaps and legality, with user #215 questioning Luxon's reliance on "trust me" assurances.
Leadership competence emerged as a critical theme, particularly in later posts. Luxon drew heavy criticism after a contentious interview where he struggled to defend policy details #194#199#211, while Willis faced backlash for her economic credentials. Hipkins garnered fleeting praise for articulation but was ultimately seen as representing poor governmental outcomes #45#119. A trusted user #308 presented expert economic analysis contradicting Treasury optimism. Infrastructure issues—like Wellington's water crisis and the dental school staffing shortage—were cited as examples of systemic mismanagement #235#12. Notable policy debates included road-user charges for EVs #220, immigration impacts on rents #299, and coalition scenarios involving NZ First #182#258. Early fringe discussions on candidates' rugby allegiances gave way to substantive policy critiques, culminating in grim Treasury forecasts discussed in posts #271#304#308. User #168 also revealed concerns about Labour rushing regulatory changes to entrench policies pre-election.

What I find concerning is that National have repeatedly said that they are responsible for the decline in ram raids in NZ through legislation they're past and programs such as boot camps by saying that ram raid data from other countries like Oz, Canada and the UK haven't recorded a decline in ram raids.

Problem with that is that of the four countries, only NZ collects national ram raid data.... it's impossible to know what's happening in the other countries as they don't collect national data for the number of ram raids.

It could well be a world wide trend occurring outside of government policy and programs aimed at stopping youth offending.
It’s not a trend in Australia. Tobacco related crime is at epidemic levels. Murder, shootings, firebombings. There are newspaper investigations happening.

So glad we have the coalition looking after us so we can walk through our city centres safely again.

Was pretty bad when we had justice ministers fleeing the police and MP’s shoplifting… the inmates were running the place for a while.

Now we have Sunny Kaushal on a reported $2500 per day trying to do a job that your beloved coalition cannot do.
Ramraids may be down for the meantime but stabbings and violence and meth use are at a new high

We know Sunni from when he was a manager at what was then called the Regent Hotel in Auckland.... over 30 years ago he upgraded us from a regular room to a suite at the hotel for the first night of our honeymoon.

I am big fan of NZ first winston peters & shane jones working hard & well in coalition.
Funny thing is that as I'm getting closer to getting a Gold Birthday card from Winnie, I'm liking him more and more. Shane Jones, IMO, always comes across as too much of a maverick. I get the feeling he'll be the NZF leader when Winnie finally puts down his blue and red phones.

I can see a lot of their supporters going back to the Nats when Winnie's gone.

Shane Jones stood up in parliament the other day and proclaimed that bottom trawling has little or no effect on the seabed of the Hauraki Gulf when everyone knows that is absolutely BS 😳
I don't trust him one little bit
To be fair it’s because the seabed is already wrecked by bottom trawling so he’s probably technically correct 😉

There are $111.8 billion in managed KiwiSaver funds so you are talking well under half a % and in the margin of error 🤷‍♂️

Honestly the unemployment rate has gone up more than the withdrawal rate… which actually shows our resilience. Quite a positive graph even really.

I’m sure there’s people applying and using the hardship because of the current recession Labours caused (and the withdraws started ramping up under Labour) but it’s also rather insignificant sums in the scheme of a huge and impressive KiwiSaver scheme.

Typical that you find positives in other peoples misery.
