The thing that really gets me is that if TPM have such a disdain for parliament (and I guess this goes back to the sovereignty issue) and it's rules and conventions. Why are they there?
Are they there to promote serious policy to assist māori as in how government works and what's best for their people or are they just a bunch of disruptors. Do they not understand Tikanga and the protocol involved. I'm sure my indoctrination by my wife before any visit to her marae ensures I'm well aware of what I can and can't do or say. Same but worse for her. If I broke the rules I would be pointed out and asked not to return. Fact, I've seen it in action.

I'm reminded of what Sinn Fein did in the UK where they won seats every year in the House but never turned up in protest. That was a statement. I would have though DNP would have got the lesson from her Irish whakapapa.

TPM, can't even understand the standing orders for question time and have to be assisted by the Greens of all people. They do not represent all māori and are a bunch of charlatans and clowns who do no real service to their people.

Jesus wept, what part of following the rules do you not understand. Rules/consequences. There is no context. Parliament, just because you don't like a bill gives you no right to disrupt the business of the house outside of the rules.
Disproportionate? In this day and age, you make the gun signal to someone on the street and pull the trigger, you're liable to end up in the pokey for hate speech (In the UK anyway) These clowns need to get a life and either start doing something for māori or GTFO as at the moment it's a disservice

And in case you have forgotten, there is no punishment at the moment as the matter has been deferred, so it's all moot. Chris Bishop proposed to give TPM an opportunity to participate in the budget debate which I find perplexing seeing they couldn't be bothered turning up to the house for it last year. Go figure. Life without parole.

Funny you say that. My wife is Ngati Porou and I'm a Celt so the dinner table and the offspring's input was always decletic and interesting.
Several of my children were like you, as I guess we all were back in the day. Wanting to save the world and throw the despots to the wolves. Unfortunately, reality kicks in, even if it takes a number of years.

No I wouldn’t have thought so either. Would be interesting to hear why they’ve come to the decision they have, whether prompted by anyone? With it so hard to get rid of staff these days, seems like it would end up in employment court

Fair point. I still wouldn't draw a conclusion that he escaped punishment because he turned up. Certainly might have helped his case taking responsibility for his actions. It appears to me that the three TPM MPs preplanned and instigated the action. Looks to me like MP Peeni Henare joined afterwards in support and didn't approach the opposition parties at all. While this doesn't excuse him it possibly mitigates his punishment somewhat. As you see in various other cases where the main instigators receive a tougher punishment than others involved.

The main factor people are forgetting is the punishment was delivered by their peers in parliament who understand more than us parliaments workings.

TPM have shown contempt for the committee, not showing up, politicising it, using it as a social media opportunity, releasing the draft verdict before it’s announced, etc.

Regardless of the crime, they deserve the book thrown at them and the harshest available punishment for the crime.

Honestly, the punishment is just another meaningless PR opportunity for them and they will continue to treat parliament with contempt.
