Politics 🗳️ NZ Politics

I'm not suggesting cutting funding to find efficiency but accountability for the funding received. And not to mean "making a profit" but to use the money to try and achieve the best outcomes for the taxpayers and those receiving services or providing assets such as infrastructure. It's about achieving a balance and trying to achieve the best outcomes.... not continuously throwing money at something and hoping that something will work out (much like the massive increases in budget under the previous government) or stripping it back so things are underfunded (like this government).
Where are your measures of efficiency and accountability/effectiveness coming from?

Take KO for example. While no one would argue that social and public housing isn’t needed, they’ve entered into public/private partnerships to provide affordable housing like Paerata Rise. Ardern was out there when sections were first houses were being completed. But, instead of being affordable, the housing there is 15% more expensive than the average new build dwelling in Pukekohe… only a few kms further south. The number of KiwiBuild and social housing homes there has been dropped down by over 75%. Very few sections there are available for private purchase and instead have to be brought from their “build partners”. The smaller builders, who would spec build 3-4 houses per year have been pushed out of there, and Kumeu and Royal Oak.

KO’s open cheque book policy drove up land costs in Auckland to ridiculous levels and was a major contributing factor to the huge increase in property values causing private developers to increase their offers for land.

While KO and their build partners are building a large number of houses, only a low percentage of them will remain as social and public houses.

But this has meant that KO’s debt levels have risen hugely to the point that it’s been acknowledged they won’t be able to pay it back and will either default or require a huge government bailout.

Then there’s the Dunedin Hospital where things like parking wasn’t included in the budget. Continuous changes requested by MOH and clinicians have led to a huge blowout.

The blowout in the cost for the ferry terminals which were designed to have a life expectancy of 100 years but, by KiwiRails own projections, would have been underwater within 50.

Auckland Lightrail which was supposed to be finished within 4 years but they had even completed the geotechnical investigations after two while the budget went out over three times the initial estimate Labour campaigned on. Money spent of plans for cycleway/pedestrian bridge attached to the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Millions of COVID money spent on things like funding school lunches and cameras in boats. Millions spent on telling us some tobacco products are better than others. Millions spent on consultants by the department which is supposed to be looking at reducing them.

Hundreds of millions of mental health spending that can’t be accounted for.

While I don’t know all the ways you would measure efficiency and accountability, it seems pretty obvious to me that all governments, left and right, only pay it lip service. Put it this way, $800,000,000 is a lot of money to increase teachers salaries than paying for more expensive lunches for kids.

You just have to look at the meals to see they’re shit. Guess those sucking up our taxpayer dollars should just feel lucky that they’re getting a feed at all ay?
Better than the kids getting flasher meals than I take to work like we had under Labour?

Need to find a good in between.

Why? If their parents had their kids needs as priority, there would be no discussion. Actually why I liked the policing model under Coster, to go and see whet the home life is like. The cost has gone from $8 to $3, and the $8 meal was offering nutrition whereas the $3 meals look like prison food. I would far rather my taxpayer dollars go here than paying for an ex mps travel perks for the rest of their lives

Providing food to children at school is one way government can directly address poverty and food insecurity and positively impact children's wellbeing.
And this heartless government only cares about lining the pockets of the rich, at the cost of everyone else. Privatisation of school lunches to a giant multinational mired in scandal

Providing food is a political football.

When it came in there were claims kids wouldn’t eat it, lots thrown away, stories of teachers eating them, etc.

Now it’s gone the other way with to cheap, prison food, etc.

When my wife ran her kindy, food was the biggest issue. Had a nutritionist design the menu and the kids wouldn’t eat it. Made it more to children’s taste and it wasn’t health enough for some parents. And then kids are super fussy eaters. There’s always plenty that won’t eat something no matter what’s served. We got more eating lunch when we went to lunch box lunches.

You can’t win when the govt provides a one size fits all for everyone. I guarantee less kids eat lunch now than when the parents provided food specific to what the children like, even allowing for some that don’t come with any lunch. No evidence - just personal experience.

The deliberate destruction and privatisation of the health system continues apace

Health is another political football.

Labour in and wait lists are forever with the media attacking them.

National is in and wait lists are forever with the media attack them.

The political games get tiresome sometimes. Always someone ready to complain.

Until we grow our GDP per person we will always be underfunding health. In the meantime, what key performance measures did Labour and National use to measure improvement?

Ideological madness that will cost the taxpayer and many homeowners billions and cause untold misery, yet again. And for what? Ideologically reversing anything Labour does? To look macho against the protections for the environment, the rights of New Zealanders in some fucking faux culture war?

Or to maximise profit and wealth extraction and outsource the losses to the citizens of New Zealand.

Disgusting.

This is about resource consenting - it allows permission to build.

You still need to get building consent and build to codes, which means geotechnical reports and engineering solutions to any flood risk. Either houses in these areas will have to be built to mitigate the risk or they won’t be able to be built. The council will have the final say. Non issue.

So article and criticism is just more negativity about nothing 🥱

How about listening the people on the ground - stop ignoring reality
