Mr Brownstone

As talented as Metcalfe is, I think we need to temper our expectaions of him. If he was an out and out star he wouldve cracked 1st grade consistently at the sharks. Moylan and Kennedy are hardly superstars.
However unfortunately Moylan & Kennedy are still better than anything in our backline. Moylan in particular went well last year which was a bit of a surprise. I don’t think the expectations on Metcalf are too out of control, more a bit of hope from the fan base than anything else.

At this point in time I would start with Kosi and Dallin as my wingers allowing Metcalf to grab his opportunity when one of the back 3 goes down injured or plays poorly. His speed sounds like exciting stuff!
Interested to know Why you’re choosing Kosi over Montoya?

I see no logic in Metcalf at Centre. The time he doesnt have the ball he could be a liability. We dont know how they are training so he may have a spot in the Halves. We think Shaun Johnson is a certainty, is he?
As far as I can tell, he's the only one in the whole squad with any kicking game at all.

Charnze and Te Maire Martin just don't. Volkman has a bomb or two in him at least, and Metcalf a little less.

None of them are noted goal-kickers, IIRC. Barnett is the next boot up to the tee.

This is a major stuff up in basic squad building. Last year at various times the carousel had Nikorima, Asi, Reecey Spoon, Chanel Harris-Tavita and returned to Ashes Taylor. It's almost as though the recruitment manager has set out to create a major problem when Shaun Johnson inevitably carks it.

I see Fantasy darlings Hynes and Cleary were training their kicking with Dan Carter this week... In Auckland... Meanwhile it's safe to assume Shaun Johnson was posing for selfies....

Nailed it. Shaun is in a similar predicament to Addin, if Shaun goes down we have no real Halfback cover to compete. Shaun gives us a punchers chance to win games, without him we're not really gonna win games.

Metcalf kicked at 75% in nsw cup over the last two seasons. Volkman was at 60% on a small sample size. Barnett is 76% again over a small sample size. Not great but passable enough.

With field kicking I’d hope that Volkman in particular has a long range kicking game. Martin has a fine short game but not a lot of range and haven’t seen enough of Metcalf to make a judgement.

I think theres a nice mixture in the halves that we have available. Need Shaun Johnson to have a good season and at least one of the other three to have a career season to be anywhere near the top half.

Good point about Addin Fonua-Blake. He's the only true power prop, without him, we'd be a bunch of 2nd rowers not even bending the line but bouncing back.

Good teams have capable backups for every position. Everyone keen to see Metcalf and more Bunty or Muhammed Ale, be careful what you wish for, because the results probably won't be pretty. But so predictable ...

100%. Luke Metcalf is our halves cover. Simple as that. To try to slot him in the team just because he is fast is foolish. Its the same flawed logic as when Cappy slotted Tuimoala Lolohea in at wing because in his words Tui was just too good to leave out. That left Tui's development in tatters and our wing spot weakened. This was a kid that played in the halves all his life.

Same goes for Metcalf. He has no experience at wing or centre. The fact that he defends there on occasion shows he is weak defensively. Its a common tactic used to help mask a players inability to defend by sandwiching him between two of your best defenders i.e. centre and second rower. Go back and watch the 2018 game against the Storm where we got pummelled and watch where Mason Lino was defending and how the Storm ruthlessly exposed that whole edge.

This is Harry Siejka all over again. People were overestimating Siejka's ability and being downright disrespectful of Thomas Leuluai's. Replace Tommy with Te Maire Martin and history seems to be repeating itself at Warrior Nation...

It's actually a bit of a worry if he's been hidden on D, because those games were against kids his own age and size. Facially he looks like Foran, but Ds like Jane, does he?
A lot of quick guys never learn or learn to like defence (cough, cough Shaun Johnson). They grow up just running away from bigger kids.

Although, apparently he has 3 or 4 older bros, that's usually a good sign for toughness.

Nothing wrong with his frame at 6ft and 86kgs... if he was 18-19... But at 23, it may be a case of what you see is what you get.

That's why I'm a bit higher on Volkman, to be fair. Younger, stronger, better kicker and low centre of gravity.
Metcalf is still a good prospect, but he really needs to nail all the tricks and kicks of the halves trade if he is lacking in the physical aspect.

Maybe he's just more of a finesse with a floor of Moylan or at best Mitchell Moses rather than an all-rounder like Hunt, Hastings or Cleary.

Luke Metcalf is taller and heaver than Papenhuyzen, same height as Dylan Edwards but lighter. He is also not far off Munster in height and weight as well. It would be nice if he was 5 - 6 kgs heavier but not if it impacts his speed. I would like him to get some games especially if we can get back to offloading more. I would think Webster would be working on his D if he has identified that as a problem. He could be utterly crap at D but I hope not. Be nice to have someone who can play 1 and 6 well and 7 in a pinch.

Anyone have much insight of Ali Leiataua? Could he be ready for first grade this year?
I’ve only seen him play one game and looks promising. A bit different to our usual homegrown outside backs(in a good way).
