Willie Swann’s coaching career has received another boost following confirmation he has been appointed as the Auckland Vulcans’ new coach for the 2013 New South Wales Cup campaign.
He steps into the role to replace 2012 Vulcans coach Ricky Henry, who was last month named as one of the Vodafone Warriors’ two assistant NRL coaches.
In announcing Swann’s signing, Vodafone Warriors general manager football operations Dean Bell and Vulcans general manager Steve Brewster also jointly confirmed 2010 Vulcans coach Brent Gemmell will work alongside Swann as assistant coach next season.
Swann has earned his third coaching promotion this year. In February he was appointed Vodafone Warriors development coach following Henry’s departure to coach the Vulcans and just last month the former Vodafone Warriors player was named as the Vodafone Junior Warriors’ assistant coach for the 2013 NYC season. Now he takes another step up.
“Willie has shown great potential as a coach working his way through the Auckland club scene and then through the Vodafone Warriors’ system,” said Bell.
“Following our in-season and post-season reviews this year, we’re making a bigger investment than ever in the Vulcans.
“In line with (head coach) Matt Elliott’s whole of club vision, it’s critical for our coaching and player pathways that our approach through all of our teams is fully integrated. Through Willie’s appointment, we’re able to maintain consistency in our coaching approach.”
Brewster said Swann’s graduation underlined the Auckland Rugby League’s commitment to raising the level for both local coaches and players through the Vulcans.
“A number of players and coaches have benefited from the opportunity provided by the Vulcans,” he said.
“Our last two coaches Richie Blackmore and now Ricky Henry have come through the Auckland Rugby League system at club level, have coached the Vulcans and have gone on to coaching roles at a higher level.
“Willie has done the same. His appointment reinforces the opportunities on offer to coaches through both the ARL and the Vodafone Warriors.”
Swann, who played for the Vodafone Warriors’ colts and reserve grade sides in 1995-1996, is one of three from the family with connections with the Vodafone Warriors. While he didn’t play at first-grade level for the club, his brother Anthony and cousin Logan both did, as well as playing for the Kiwis.
Usually a halfback, Willie Swann pursued coaching after a playing career which was highlighted by professional stints in England with the Warrington Wolves (1996-1998), Rochdale Hornets (1999-2000) and Leigh Centurions (2000-2005). A Junior Kiwi in 1993, he represented Toa Samoa at the 1995 and 2000 World Cups.
Also a qualified teacher, he’s a dean at Liston College in Auckland. He coached the East Coast Bays Barracudas in the Auckland club competition from 2009-2011 and last year he was appointed as head coach at his old club Marist for the 2012 season before joining the Vodafone Warriors.
Three other Vulcans positions have also been confirmed with Mick Lacey re-appointed as the football manager and Nick Webb and Simon Keepa appointed the team’s trainer and physio respectively.
With Swann moving to his new role, Kelvin Wright becomes the Vodafone Junior Warriors’ new assistant coach. Wright stepped into the coaching scene last year after a long and successful playing career including representing New Zealand Residents, Auckland, the Vulcans and Mount Albert. He began coaching with the Otara Scorpions in the Auckland competition last year before guiding the Bay Roskill Vikings in the Fox Memorial premiership this season.

Man I'm hanging out already mate and it's still only 2012.

There are some pretty handy Polynesian 'village' games on soon (Tongans and Samoans normally hold them early in the year I think). Mostly smash-n-bash to be honest but there are some really good teams going around and you get some excellent games with skill and physicality when those particular teams come together.

TBH haven't been for a couple of years but if you wanna see some BIG HITS and you're desperate for some footy...just sayin'...

I know the Tongan Village games have already happened. Played out in Mt. Roskill. Apparently thats where Akuma Ta'ai first really caught the eye of Warriors scouts. Tongan whispers so??? Mate of mine got scouted from there for one of the Broncos QLC feeder clubs. Never made it past that team but was given an 5 year workers permit without being a NZ citizen which is pretty big and very rare for new Tongan immigrants. Got set up a house and a job. Last year I spotted scouts from Broncos and the Knights. They were all dressed in their club gear and were openly approaching players including Warrior hopeful Atelea Nafetalai. Who knows how many scouts their actually were.

I went today, my club had 5x players make the 20x but I heard there is 8x contracts up for grabs??? IMO it was a decent trial, but there were a few players who looked off the pace, probaly started pre season late, is my guess. As mentioned a few players looked good for the future.

Sadly didnt know the names of most of the players. There was definately players that stood out and were just sharper, fitter, stronger and more skillful then most. The final trial was great and we got to see some quality footy. Quite impressed with a couple of the boys from the Sea Eagles. Think one of them is called Uase and the other was Roman? One of the props that featured in all 3 trials played really well. Anyone know his name? Zoram Watene, cousin of Malakai Watene-Zelezniak, was having a great game till he had a fairly serious headclash that I was told would need stitches. He stood out for sure.

All in all it was a great day of league. Thought it would satisfy my itch but its only made me wanting more! Cant wait for Hamilton...

It sounds like heaps of players who turned up.
So why of all of a sudden all the old boys putting their handup? World Cup - possible selections for the island nations.
Or maybe they are offering more money lol.

Must of been Kimi Uasi - with the big afro - he played a long career in reserve grade didnt quite crack NRL.
He played for Tonga at the last world cup.
He is a gun, but would be in his early 30s.

Roman Hifo - he's goes alright but past it in terms of progressing any further.
Not sure how old he is but looks late 20s.

Zoram Watene is the older brother I think - thats good to hear that he might be playing over here.
Thought he had NRL potential - pretty small but good cover for the vulcans.
Similar to Kevin Locke.

Thanks for the intel. Pity about Kimi's age. He played really well and was a cut above the rest IMO. Hifo was just busy and solid. Zoram is a little live wire. Your comparison with Locke is spot on. He needs to put on some weight, a little light IMO. TBH I think he will give Fish a good run for his money. Might do the Fish a world of good really...

Agnatius Passi and roman hifo - both with us, though before you say it mate, yes roman's at papakura but he's been doing his pre season with us and is in the process of transferring back to hawks his junior club - transfers have been lodged. I would say Kimi uasi because he's a junior from us and has indicated he wants to come home this year but I haven't seen him yet at a pre season. Kimi's good value IMO he went well in Nationals, but at that age in his favoured position in Vulcans don't know, tevita latu made some impact last year when he came back. There was a few yesterday at the trial but to be honest the warrior 20's trial was better to watch, Dylan Collier didn't wow me and he is signed to us as well. I expected Soape Kavaliku to stand out but he looked ordinary at times as well, hey apart from the heat that's playing on concrete in some parts of the field yesterday, ground was dry.

Agree. Looked like he wanted to be somewhere else. Dont think standing out on the wing helped.

Anyone know who was the #10 on the red team in the final trial? Think he wore the #10 in the black team and the #15 in the second trial?
