General Why has this team fallen off a cliff?

They have lost their soul. They have lost their New Zealndish.
Go back to Maurice Rd. Get a reserve grade and under 20 s back in the comp. This alone will put competitive pressure on first grade players.
At the present time there is no or very little competition to existing first grade players.
This year is fxxxd won’t get better.
Don’t take it out on Stacey. He is just helping out.

Our players are not students of the game.

They’re just backyard footy players.

To be successful in the NRL you need to be passionate to the point of obsession trying to master it and the position you play in.

Its been well documented we’re a family club. Our players are good with the physical attributes, but they don’t live and breathe the game. It’s not their #1 priority in life.

Our team are casuals. Game plan too hard? Why is it too hard? Because you haven’t put in the effort needed to master and understand it.

We’re team best suited to ESL or the Qld Cup. Less intense and less work needed.

The basic mental lapses yesterday- kicking out on the full, playing the ball incorrectly, dropping balls , terrible passing are all signs the team have not done their homework off the field.

If you want to succeed, you needed to find players and people with high football IQ and wanting to learn the game.

There are levels to this.

You can’t just throw Walshy and Berry to starting NRL side. They’re not ready for 80mins of NRL week in and week out.

It’s irresponsible and their development has and will suffer.

The reason we are so bad is our edge defence. That is what compounds our other issues and every error we make.

I have no idea why we are so passive when an opposition playmaker gets the ball. we sit on our heels and give them all the time in the world
Haha we almost jog backwards as the ball player approaches our line. Other teams are in our face before the dummy half even picks the ball up - usually offside but still effort is there…

I watched Egan closely and he takes the 3rd set to get to dummy half !
I've noticed this too he's actually done this since he started with us definitely need Otukolo to develop and use his run game more to change things up like Lawton

The Walsh article from last year sums our club up players getting teased for actually studying the game

Payton noted the same when he was with us - couldn’t believe that most of the team didn’t even watch the other games. IMO you should be watching as much of the opposition as possible, especially the guys in your position doing it better than you are. Nathan Cleary is apparently a complete league tragic and it shows

There’s a lot of speculation about players attitudes etc and in particular Shaun Johnson supposed ego etc- don’t think it’s helping too much passing assumptions as facts there.
BIGGEST problem is our defence, it’s just horrible, we have shown under other coaches that we can be pretty decent or at least competitive with the right structures- we a so far from that right now it’s comical, we seem to be stubbornly sticking with the same shit structures- our defence coaches need to be gone yesterday.
Mentally is the other major struggling point. Yes there’s the obvious away from home, even being in their own places etc they are pretty much living at work 24/7 and that can take a toll, things like the reffing decisions and mistakes on field compound very quickly to the point where it all seems futile.
Lack of other grades means there aren’t adequately match fit players to come in, have to either persevere with non performance or bring in players cold. The players confidence is just shot and I saw signs yesterday at the team becoming frustrated with their own players.
Scariest thing for me is there doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel, in fact the opposite. Many long term day oner fans are just walking away, I’ve had the odd years where I won’t watch for a couple of games but still check in on the score and catch a replay if we do ok sorta thing. I watched the first half of yesterday’s game to see if I could find some positive signs (there were none) that things may turn around. Apart from that I’ve gone about a month of not watching, even to the point of forgetting when we are even playing, this in the past was in fathomable. It’s not just the Warriors though apart from origin I’ve stopped watching NRL completely during this time where I’d usually watch most games or at least the minis of the round.
Another first for me was yesterday I found myself betting against the Warriors for the first time in my life(usually avoid betting on their fixtures) was shocked to find out one of my mates who still subscribes to the ‘keep the faith’ mantra had done the same.

Where did things go wrong? That is probably a long list.

The squad looked better at the start of the year. I don't go out for top 6 predictions like we often see each year. After struggling to make the top 8 we need that hurdle sorted first.

Short term taking Addin Fonua-Blake and Lodge out of a team that was already low on the go-forward stats.

The defense wasn't great before but it's gone from a few individual errors or losing structure every so often to pretty brittle. Early in the season, we were conceding enough that we could fight back.

The mistakes aren't helping. We are pretty much guaranteed a kick going out on the full either a 5th tackle kick for yardage or a kick-off. Both put us under more pressure. We can go from a team playing with a completion rate of 90% to one that doesn't complete a set for 5-10 minutes. This includes pushed passes or in yesterday's case Murchie playing the ball sideways. I'll put the Murchie one there as a lot is written about our homegrown players and their lack of hard football growing up. But we still get issues from the young Australians and the experienced players.

Some injuries have probably contributed to the fall-off in form. Arthurs was going well running off Johnson and Curran although still prone to a few mistakes was one of our better players and gets stuck in.

This is all from what we can see on the field. I'd say there is stuff going on off the field that is contributing. The coach looked to have been out of ideas and is now gone. I wouldn't be surprised if there has been a few arguments or players getting pissed off with some of the efforts or decisions being made. Losing would also compound things further.

Heard that back in the day Elijah Taylor got shit for doing extras after training. Tall Poppies? “You think you’re better than us bro?”.
They need to find out who it is and cut them asap!!! I had the same thing in my work place, anyone who wanted to Up skill, work hard and try get promoted got brought down. I weeded them out, got rid of them and the results have never been better. That crabs in a bucket mentality is a sure way to never improve.

I don't know why successive coaches now have insisted that Egan is an 80minute player, he's clearly not, and on top of that I think he was playing injured yesterday after that knock while scoring. Should have had Otukolo on the bench for a good 30 minutes around half time.
Yet he was the only player making an effort to run down Katoa? when Walsh fucked up again and the Sharks got the last runaway try

How often over the years when the Warriors have announced the signing of a senior player have we thought "Yes! Brilliant signing! He'll be great!" and if's worked out like that??

Struggling to think of anyone post Price/Wiki, frankly...

The re-signing of SJ2 is looking like the resigning of SJ1 back in 2008, sadly.

Since I've learned about the Salary Floor - the minimum of the Cap that each club has to spend - I've been wondering how many signings/resignings were "Well, we've got to spend that on someone....May as well be him..."
Exactly right Mr Blonde,
The salary floor kills us mug clubs....no good player wants to really come here for a start so realistically we are left fighting ( which means outbidding) with the other mug clubs to get our roster filled with it fair share of very average talent for a kick off.
The fact that weve had to out bid those other clubs means that our players are on well overs compared to a similarly skilled player in a top 8 club before we even start.

The whole situation is made worse by the fact that relative to the Aussie clubs we have to pay overs to get the players to come to Aucklland in the first place and then to make matters worse then some players then get effectively a "top up" ( overs on overs) ) so that we spend 95% of the cap.
In summary a disaster for us........the nett and main bad siide effect of this is that we have a number of players who no way in hell would get their contracts anywhere else.........this is a major ( subconscious ) disincentive for our players.

They have no need to use our games to shop front their skills to other clubs...they are quite happy getting the best contract alot of them will ever ,ever get in the NRL,right here at the Warriors..
You want proof Ill give you three examples:
(1) Look,at the history of The Storm "stars" who were going to,come here and change our culture......Neilson,Lowery,Hoffman and even Harris ...the worst was a flop and the best was okay but certainly no long term legacy left by any of these players.
(2) Recently how many of our home grown young " stars" have gone on to other NRL clubs and been successful ?... Isiaha Papalii and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad...thats about it....ironically both released by Kearney and management who didnt rank either of them yet they were keen to give Pompey and Berry long term deals....lol...
Most Warrior discards should consider themselves fortunate if they get an ESL contract.
(3) Shaun Johnson.....enouyh said.

The salary cap set up ( 95%) minimum spend does not help us at all.
If you are a 17 year old school leaver without much academic ability and know that your families only hope of actually buying a house or getting out of Otara,Aranui,Wainuiomata or Kawerau a Warriors contract is the Golden Ticket.......you get that ...youve made it.
For the Warriors the 95% Salary gap rule and the ongoing and seemingly never ending Vodafone sponsorship have one thing in common....
Unintended Consequences........and until things change do not expect any meaningful success.

Heard that back in the day Elijah Taylor got shit for doing extras after training. Tall Poppies? “You think you’re better than us bro?”.
Easy reply for Elijah would've been " no Bro....I know Im not ..thats why Im doing this ,I need to do it because I want to be a good as you "..
.( .but thinking to himself " way better than you ,which wont be that difficult")

Its a good anecdote about Taylor actually because if any Warriors player can be held up as a guy who had limited natural ability but made the most of it through hard work and was to have a long and successful career and in fact over performed ..it was Elijah.....Big ups to him.....
His attitude would be useful right about now.

This is due to our team being crap for so long, if the warriors were playing well and in the top 8, you’d be all over the NRL

The fact they havent played at home for nearly 3 years just shows you what home ground advantage shows you how important that is to the players and staff. No other team in the world has had this distraction in this pandemic.
