Nathan Brown could be early front-runner for Warriors coaching job

Nathan Brown, tipped to become the Warriors' next longterm head coach, has a 42.4 per cent winning percentage as a NRL coach.

Nathan Brown, tipped to become the Warriors' next longterm head coach, has a 42.4 per cent winning percentage as a NRL coach.

Nathan Brown could headline a list of candidates to fill the Warriors' vacant head coaching role as a long line of potential successors rushed to contact the club following the shock sacking of Stephen Kearney.

The Warriors on Sunday begin the search to replace Kearney, who was unceremoniously dumped after the club's underwhelming start to the season.

The likes of former Penrith coach Anthony Griffin, Sydney Roosters deputy Craig Fitzgibbon, and Melbourne No 2 Jason Ryles are all also expected to be in the mix.

However, Brown, the former Newcastle and St George Illawarra mentor, could be the early frontrunner, having been brought on as a consultant over the pre-season.

Warriors CEO Cameron George refused to confirm whether Brown, who himself was dumped as Newcastle coach last August, would be considered for the role.

"You'd have to ask Nathan. I'm not going to sit here and say whether he's a candidate or not. You'd have to ask those individuals," George said.

"At the end of the day, myself and our owners will sit down and work out who and when we talk to people and make that decision at the appropriate time.

"We've got to control the situation. No doubt we'll be linked to a myriad of people, which is fair enough.

"At the end of the day, we've got to get this right and we'll take whatever process we need to, to give us the best shot at getting it right.

"That's the most important thing for me."

However George, who said he didn't sound out any other coaches before sacking Kearney, did confirm to NewstalkZB on Sunday that he had been contacted by a "dozen people'' who were interested in taking over at the Auckland-based club.

"There's no way in this world I would have gone and spoken to another coach behind Stephen's back," George told NewstalkZB.

"We have a very capable person in Todd Payten to step in as an interim until such time we undergo a process to see who is out there.

"Overnight I would have had a dozen people contact me around the role. People wanting to put their hand up for the job isn't a problem. We just have to make sure we follow due process and take our time to find the best possible person for the role."

The Warriors' brutal call to axe Kearney is set to cost them a reported $2 million, given the former New Zealand coach was in the first 12 months of a three-year extension.

That figure would take up over a third of this year's football department cap, which is believed to be soft capped at $5.7 million.

But George indicated club owner Mark Robinson, whose firm Autex Industries took sole ownership late last year, would wear the costs.

"Whilst we never like to have these discussions, we're very comfortable commercially, which are very confidential," he said.

"We're comfortable where we've reached a middle ground."

George, who said he didn't regret handing Kearney an extension, suggested Robinson played a key role in the coach's demise.

"You never make a bad decision at the time, do you," George said.

"Hindsight will always educate you on those, and in this situation I never doubted that that was the right decision for the club at the time to do so.

"We've had three different owners in two-and-a half years as well, and we've all got a different vision of what the future looks like.

"We are where we are now because we're making a decision about our future."

I've got a sinking feeling we're going to get Toovey with Lowe as director of coaching after reading Lowe endorse Toovey. All the recent events are adding up.

If that article is correct and there wasn’t a break option in Kearneys contract, I wouldn’t want to be in Cameron George’s shoes when the owner reminds him how much he personally has shelled out.

I voted griffin because I didn’t read it properly. Ideally Fitzgibbon would be my ideal coach, a lot of good things have been said about him. Realistically From the list of mediocre who will want to come I’ll go with Hook. Who doesn’t actually have that bad a record

Yea i was going to go Fitz aswell but after the talk we had in the Kearney thread i just dont see him coming here at all, not with three other clubs potentially needing head coaches in the next few weeks and them being based in Aus lol

Hook Griffin.
Broncos 2011/2014 101 games 54 wins.
Penrith 2016/2018 same sort of stat.
Is it fair to say he built today’s Penrith team? Got punted from Penrith due to Gus Gould having various insecurities.
Still only 53 years old.
I wonder whether he would relate up our kiwi players although I note this year we actually have a lot more aussies in our side.

Nathan Brown. Rebuilt the Knights. Created the 2020 successful Knights side.

Todd Payten .. lets see what he can do as well. Tuesday’s team naming very interesting.

Graham Lowe 73 years old say no more.

Toovey. Nobody has offered him a coaching gig since Manly.

And Mooks. Good luck to you. You are a good man and showed quality leadership skills through all the covid 19 issues. The club should have let you go at the end of this season in a dignified way and had a replacement ready at preseason. Anyway Mooks enjoy your family. Mate many of us get fired. It’s a learning curve.

Fitzgibbon has the potential to be a Cleary or Anderson in terms of an up and comer needing a shot- it is a risk to appoint a rookie though, Kearney was a great assistant after all...
Wane is the other that could be interesting but again the risk with Superleague
Wane won’t be getting paid a lot for what is a part time job as England coach, also no games will have been played in months. He comes across as a disciplinarian and I don’t think he stands for any messing about by the players. I’ve seen him play and heard him talk about the game and he is a genuine hard case whose career was curtailed by bad injuries. Also seems to promote youngsters, maybe because they are more inclined to knuckle down and follow his instructions

Downsides are it’s a step up in intensity and the obvious one about relocating, family etc..

Reading that makes it look like the guy has never lost a game lol

Wane would be a gamble buy no worse then other names listed.
It's going to be interesting who gets the job.

Whilst Griffen record is good I am not sure if he's right for the Warriors. He should still be coaching at Penrith.
