Recruitment Who Should The Warriors Sign For 2017/2018?

Lord, please no more Rene Ranger hype...can we at least start one someone new, like Rieko Ioane? He seems to go alright, and he's only 19, that leaves a solid 10-15 years of baseless rumours to look forward to.

Who should we sign? Not sure. I would've thought the priority positions would be prop and backrow. Unless Albert Vete and Sam Lisone really step up, I see us lacking a fair bit of go forward. Guys like Afoa, Papalii, Gubb should provide adequate supporting cast type efforts, but they're not really guys you can pencil in for 60 mins and 130+ meters. Tohu Harris Harris for Ryan Hoffman is a great swap next season, though the backrow is certainly still lacking some punch, especially as Simon will be a year older.

The good or bad part is that our cap is very spine heavy, it really depends on how well Kearney goes this year. The Storm have survived with this mantra for years because their spine is so good, and their game plan so precise, that they basically manufacture a side around a few key players. Essentially we're headed for the same type of scenario, perhaps even a step further, as we try retain a star 1, 6, 7 and 9. Traditionally the Storm have worked on retaining only 3 of the 4. Long story short, this leaves sweet fuck all cash to spend elsewhere. Hence the suggestions that we may be in the race to sign a guy like Jesse Bromwich would seem quite unlikely.

Whether or not an amazing spine is the be all, end all, is another story. The Sharks managed a premiership last year with Barba, Maloney, Chad and Ennis. Certainly at the start of the season those guys were hardly in the superstar category. Barba was playing off the bench, Chad was battling for a place in the side and Ennis was apparently on his last legs on a retirement deal. What they didn't lack was quality and experience across the park in other positions.

In any case, it may seem like an obvious answer, but who we should sign will depend largely on how these guys go this year. RTVS missed almost the entire season in 2016 and Foran hasn't laced up a boot in anger for the Warriors ever. If the spine all stay fit and can get some cohesion and we make the 8, then you'd have to say priority should be given to making sure they stay together whilst re-signing the next tier of important/young players in the forwards. If it all goes tits up yet again, then lets get rid of them all and start looking for Grant Rovelli 2.0 in QLD Cup feeder clubs.

One beast prop (Bromwich or a rugby convert)

One beast second rower (Napa or Taumalolo)

One Fijian speedster

One utility who can cover centre (Because I'mnot sure if Lolohea can play centre)

I'm sure at this time of the year clubs look very closely at who misses the squad for Round 1 in opposing teams.

For me this year there seems to be less depth across the NRL in general. There isn't too much 1st grade-ready quality that is missing out - and that is before injuries have struck.

One club that does seem to have a few riches is the Roosters in their outside backs. Joseph Manu looks like an attractive player to poach. He only committed to a 1 year deal and with Gordon, Latrell Mitchell, SKD, Ferguson and Tupou there is a lot of competition for the spots. At this stage he has missed out.

I hope someone is asking him to come home

I was wondering myself about JManu too. But with SKD getting on, it would surprise me if the Roosters will want to keep him there to take SKD's place for either injury, suspension or due to retirement.

Cowboys could lose Jason Taumalolo and Matt Scott to salary cap restraints

COWBOYS coach Paul Green has appealed to the NRL for salary cap guidance as his club confronts the reality that it could lose Test stars Matt Scott and Jason Taumalolo.

The NRL and Rugby League Players’ Association are yet to finalise a new collective bargaining agreement from 2018, which will include revised salary cap.

The negotiations have stalled recruitment and retention practices at many clubs, who are playing Russian roulette with their squads beyond this season.

The Cowboys have already lost teenage sensation Kalyn Ponga, who has signed a lucrative deal with Newcastle from 2018.

And they are in danger of losing premiership-winning forwards Scott and Taumalolo, who have attracted serious interest from rivals.

With champion halfback Johnathan Thurston also off-contract, the Cowboys are in a precarious position managing their roster without a definitive figure for what they can pay players next year.

“They probably need to give us a little bit of guidance so we’re all working to the same figure,” Green told The Courier Mail.

“It doesn’t have to be set in stone, but at least give us something. They must have a bit of an idea of what it’s going to be.

“Throughout this last 12 months, clubs have been working off anywhere from $9-10.5 million.

“There is a lot of difference there.

“You’d hate to lose a player for the sake of $100,000 then you find out you could have afforded it down the track. That’s the difficult part.”

Co-captain Scott is in the sights of cashed-up Newcastle while Cronulla has identified Taumalolo as the man to replace Paul Gallen.

Thurston is expected to finish his career in Townsville.

Ponga made his NRL debut in last year’s finals series and was a star of last month’s Auckland Nines.

The Cowboys were not willing to get closer to the Knight’s offer for Ponga due to the pressure it could have placed on their 2018 salary cap.

“If we had known what the cap was going to be, we might have been able to offer him more money,” Green said.

“At that stage we weren’t willing to risk that. We run the risk of being over the cap when it’s set.”

Two players who are getting close to use by are Lillyman and Vatuvei. If we need a Manu clone we have Maumalo. I also don't go along with the 'beast Prop' point of view as we have the Sipleys coming through.

Allwood is a player I don't get the hate on. He is no world beater, but has he ever let us down. He is a player you get what is on the can.

If Foran gets close to his best we need to try and lock him in. However, we do need also to try and retain Hingano, along with all the guys coming off contract.

For me players needing to perform for new contracts are, Matulino, Vete, Lisone, Luke, Gubb, Gavet, Sao, Lolohea, Roache, Clarke and Tevaga.

Safe for me are Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Fusitua, Kata, Shaun Johnson, Mannering, Thompson, Hingano, Afoa, Papalii.

Allwood got absolutely smashed once or twice last season in the centres. I think as a winger he's a solid back up however.

Add to that the fact he is in the top 25 when he should be on a 2nd tier contract and he just isnt worth the coin. Depth journeyman at best. Certainly not worth a top 25 minimum wage spot...

True, didn't realise he was top 25.

Not sure exactly where I should post this, it might have been mentioned already. But I think the warriors might have updated a few of the player profiles on their website. From what I remember the player weights were different last time I checked, also they added info on Pat Sipley... Have him listed at 190cm and 116kg. If that's the case I'd love to see him improve and hopefully get into 1st grade. Could be the big monster prop ive been asking for all this time. If not then obviously will need to buy one. Also have ALbert at 112kg, I think I remember him being 110 last time. I like that he's putting on some more size, turning into a real wrecking ball.

Don't think he'd come to the warriors but Matt Prior would be a good replacement for Lillyman. He's off contract with Cronulla end of this season. Other NSW clubs are circling, apparently.

Always liked prior- not sure if he's the type of player we need but he's very underrated

Yeah dude I first took note of him in 2015 I think... He had a big year last season and looks to be in for another good one. He's a big unit too. I'd say he'll command a fairly hefty price now though.

Yeah u hardly hear him mentioned but he's won premierships with 2 different clubs now (dragons and sharks).
He's been a bit of a thorn in our side over the years too.
I wouldn't complain if they got him on board.
