General Who should be captain next year?

Shaun never got on that well with the refs, you could hear his "eh?!?"s through the mics and his face always looked life the ref had just told him the bars closed or you were doing 55 in a 50 zone or some other irritant.
Thought that too actually, then watched back his last few games. Still pulls the face on occasion but good with the talk and the talk back from the ref sounds respectful - but your right of course, never going to be Cam Smith least of all in a Warriors jersey.

I suspect it will be really simply resolved in the end.

There won't be more than two candidates who will even agree to do the job.

Fronting the press after a Warriors game is a miserable job most of the time because can you imagine having to answer for a lot of the crap they do? the under performance or plain dumb decisions?

I don't see any incentive that is worth it to take something like that on.

Roger is the kind of guy who would agree to it, because he is amenable, an earnest sort of bloke that wants to please his coach and club. He is a very responsible sort of person, it suits him.

The other thing they have to be really careful about, is not wrecking someone’s game by giving them the poisoned chalice.

Tohu Harris had to be convinced by SK to take any form of leadership within the club, I kind of hope it is him if anyone, because he models what it should look like. He is articulate, but just quiet, by choice, one of those think before you speak people. Still waters run deep there.

But I would hate to see him suffering under that role like Simon did while carrying everyone every week.

To me Dallin Watene-Zelezniak probably stands out the best, and precisely because he is an outsider.

I think what is starting to resonate to me from some of the posts is that lobbying with the refs seems to be the most important criteria
If possible I think an aussie would be best suited to this job as kiwis are subdued modest and polite. The best lobbyists in the nrl complain about every decision that goes against them regardless if it is justified or not just so that the ref eventually gives them an even up call. Even if that even up call is not needed
All the top four teams whinge after each penalty
We need someone to whinge and I think Egan is best suited as he as Australian and knows thus art form. Kiwis can't whinge well.
The above is all tongue in cheek. But unfortunately there is truth to the fact teams that whine get better decisions than we do.

After having some amazing leaders captain the Warriors and we still have the same issues I don't think the 'impact' on who is captain will matter that much. If they are a leader they will still lead.
My main concern is how will impact the individual? Make them better or worse?

My choice in order:

1 - Tohu Harris Harris - mana with the playing group, longevity at the club, respected within the game, older/ experienced. What is missed is the recent player poll where he is number 3 for best sledger - he can talk when needed! His to take IF he wants it, which he may not…

2 - Dallin Watene-Zelezniak - kiwi captain, articulate, intelligent, still young so has long term captain potential but youth/ lack of experience is also a negative. Negatives include stuck out on the wing and form could be an issue if not leading by example.

3 - Shaun Johnson - game manager, marketable, articulate, passionate about the Warriors. Negatives - to emotional, has been kept out of the leadership group in the past, attitude when he last left…. I feel his role is more marketing to the public rather than leadership within the team.

4 - Addin Fonua-Blake - pack leader, best in position, has a take no prisoners attitude, articulate, player respect, intimidating with refs, young - many years ahead in the job. Negatives - bad ref history/ potential lack of ref respect, young/ inexperience, will only be on half the game, off field history is not marketable. Would be a dark horse that could work beautifully but a gamble.

Of more importance than the captain is the leadership group. The fact we have half a team of captain candidates indicates good experience and strong on field leadership. Walsh long term option in 3 years as a carrot to stay!

You should have added a poll.
This is going to be a thread where the options we favor get narrowed down through Korero

After two pages Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is being ruled out for being on the wing and Addin Fonua-Blake is not being endorsed for a number of good reasons

The options are slimming down to
1 Tohu Harris
2 Shaun
3 Co captaincy between both

I am against option three as it waters down both Co captains power

Won’t be Shaun Johnson after 2018/19… only possibility is if others turn it down. There’s a reason he wasn’t even in the leadership group.

To elaborate my reasons - I think Shaun Johnson is great with media, ok with refs, a loud voice on the field. I do not think Tohu Harris is any of those things.

On the other hand, if someone needs to be pulled into line for cutting corners or getting on the drink, Shaun Johnson can’t do that without a risk of being undermined. Tohu Harris can.

No to Addin with his history, can't have your captain calling the ref a retard and giving the middle finger to the camera. (Not that there's anything wrong with that). Euan Aitken the standout choice for mine if they don't go with Shaun or Tohu Harris.

Shaun Johnson will certainly be in the leadership group. I am old school and think there can only be one on field Captain, certainly Refs prefer talking to one player, that is reasonable. One possibility for me is Aitken.

I don't think it matters too much. I prefer we go with a lotto Powerball type draw after the team is named to decide who is captain for the round.
Jokes aside I do not think it matters much.

Captains lost their relevance when the NRL became an on field trainer coaches voice on field leadership structure.

Not saying that a good captain is not a thing anymore, just far less vital than people imagine it to be.

If you want a Ref guy, you are talking an Aussie on a big Salary....with a big rep...that will be Reece Walsh soon enough....if he wanted it....key thing...if he actually wants it...

If he did want the job, they might as well bring him into the leadership group and start preparing him for it over the next couple of seasons and use an interim guy in the mean time.

The reason I say Walsh is that he has said himself that he enjoys telling people what to do.

From what I've seen lately he does seem to have matured a bit since he was last here. Hopefully part of the 5 way zoom meeting between management and him and 1 on 1 chat with Cameron George he accepted his faults in the past including attitude while management accepted there mistakes in that Saga.
