Not quite what I expected..Almost thought that the 6 point win was going to happen .Bring on next weeks game cause even the Panthers lost their first game too .
And the Panthers couldn’t even get on the board

Thought there was some real sloppy passing out of dummy half thru 2nd half as well. Several times ball went to ground from both Lussick and Metcalf. Rushing defence didn’t help but it’s like we be have a plan B or C and looked very pedestrian.
Can’t see many changes if any. The injury toll will be interesting. Presuming Egan and Capewell are all good, can see Webby running out same 13 and maybe a bench change. Niukore back next week would be nice. Not a big Jazz fan but we lacked a bit of his engery out there last night

The ground announcer was terrible. Trying to make chats up during the game sounded liked shit !
Totally Agree. The club have got this one wrong! Hope they bin the MC trying to “Gee up” the crowd now. This isn’t basketball. The MCs long monotoned “waaarriors” chant is awful. We don’t need to be told when to support, chant and scream for our own team… Crowd atmosphere has never been a problem. Hope Cam George and his merry marketing men leave the crowd to do its job on this one.

Metcalf still can’t make a decision. Passing to AFB to kick on the 5th when you want to be a 7!!!

Ford is all effort with no skill.

Egan is the most important player in this team IMO. I’d love to see the avg meters per set between when Egan and Lussick were on. As soon as Egan came back I we rolled down the field again.

So slutted - trying to be sanguine, when you dominate like that and find early weaknesses in your opposition you win 9/10 of those. This was that exception I guess - the left side is interesting, where both of our tries came, both involving Metcalf coming back in on overrunning defenders (obviously for the solo, immediate prior play for Addin's). That's caused the threat of RTS on the outside, right? It's a very smart move having him there - but it's only proof of concept at this point. While I don't like getting into personnel critcisms, especially this early, because the pattern and the plan is what gives consistency of opportunity, you have to ask if Metcalf is the right guy on the inside for this plan.

Taine was busy and did everything a rookie fullback should against a pretty good defence and with little front foot ball. Calm the farm ladies, it's one loss in a long season. If we are none from 3 after chch then we can start the panic and the sack the whoeverr.
Apart from his last run in the dying stages that had a half break, I personally don’t feel confident in him breaking the line or being that link player and that wasn’t just from last night. I thought RTS should be fullback when I learnt of CNK’s injury and I still do

Some of the runs in the last quarter were pedestrian. Especially when urgency is required. That fucked with the ruck speed. We were told to release immediately, whereas every takle they made was a surrender or dominant. They wanted it more and we had no cohesion or direction in attack when it mattered.
We'll get better as the season progresses. But the long suffering fan in me saw the habits of the dark years and that makes me very nervous.

Next week will be tough. It seems like forever that we have beaten the Storm. Long gone are the days when we were their bogey side.

The Sharks are a good side so this was always a possibility. The early rounds are often filled with upsets or teams getting tipped over as sides have trained all season and been out to impress. Come rounds 2 the teams that lost then get motivated to turn it around.

If we won at home and turned it into a fortress it would have been great. That can still happen.

The other important thing is winning on the road. The first opportunity starts next week.

Hopefully this loss gives everyone motivation to turn it around. A win against the Storm would be great confidence wise. It could be a road trip we have to revisit again later in the year.

That last 60mins gave me ‘Nathan Brown era’ vibes..

- taking our 2 alpha props off at the same time
- playing a 3 man bench
- one dimensional, clunky attack
- trying to go around without gaining ascendancy in the middle
- confusing interchanges
- dumb relieving penalties when we had them pinned in their 20
- Fords feet for hands

Lots to work on this week!

We’re gonna be fine, that game gave us a scare…..only 1 round in.

Think of it as our 3rd & last trial game. Clunky and the pace & intensity of first grade was apparent. Tough comp but we have the goods…..key players out etc. Webby has to make some adjustments and tough calls.

We didn’t get pumped. Sharks are a good side….especially defensively & they are big…..side note: Talakai is a beast aye, built like a bowling ball & runs/rolls like one, something about short stocky centres that are super dangerous.

But we’re a better side.

We could’ve leaked more points and we were close to scoring at least 2 more tries.

There’s plenty of upsides to look forward to.

I’ve still got plenty of hope, gave us a C but when things start clicking with a little luck going our way also we’re well within the running.

And don’t forget that first 20mins…..that’s not traditional Warriors so it’s promising.

Bring on Melbourne. Last night will be a distant memory.
Well said. Next week presents an opportunity for total absolution, who cares about a clunky round one start (I was expecting it, kept saying a grinding game is life vs the Sharks). But yeah who cares, the Storms scalp is the prize.
Beat the Storm and the season is full bore on track.

Our problem at the moment is we are a top team missing half of its spine half of the time.

Once Egan was out we slid to fumbling underdogs. I feel sorry for Taine, it takes a while to learn those right edge block plays, Berry took quite a while to get it right, CNK took a while, even RTS back in the day.....yet people want Taine doing it fluidly when Egan is only playing half a game.

Last year when we lost half our spine we lost games like this.

RTS was well off from where he could be, not through lack of trying, rather through lack of time to develop those all important combos.

I don't get why SJ is being blamed, he put on an Adam Reynolds like masterclass in pinning the Sharks. SJ kept us in that game and it almost came off.

I hope he can repeat that against Melbourne, we're gonna need it....every time we face those purple bastards we seem to go in wracked with injuries.

I dont see what Taine brings to the fb position hes small & gets owned in the tackle. He seems to get big wraps but i thought even Geronimo Doyle outplayed him in his 5mins in the trial. Also Lussic wouldnt even make most teams reserve grade & we have zero bench impact.

Man those last 6 or 7 pages were a bit doom and gloom

Sharks are a good team and had a great plan - dare I say it - very Warriors v Raiders game plan from last year, where we soaked up all the pressure in the first half and then went on to win.

Metcalf - I thought was pretty decent. Great run for that try, had a few kicks that have his chasers a chance, and gave Roger some early ball at times. Defence was largely good. Had some mistakes/errors but as the 2nd playmaker in a team I thought he did most of what you could ask of him. Appears to have matured from that 'deer in the headlights, run at every opportunity' mode he was in last year. If you were expecting Darren Lockyer you'd be disappointed, but hes definately improved from last year.

Tuaupiki - maaaan I like this dude but for me, he's a 'nearly man'. Looks dangerous and nearly gets through the line every time but is caught.
In all honesty, he doesn't seem to fit our style of play. We had Walsh before last year and he did great things at times, but like Tuaupiki he just didn't fit out style. When CNK went down I stated the decision is essentially between who we want to grow more - Ali v Tuaupiki (by having Roger play the other position) so I really think we need to reevaluate that for the next few rounds.

But overall, i don't think we need too many changes. Defence was largely good. SJ was good at forcing repeat sets, our attacking structures at times were good...we have PLENTY of upside, overall it was an okay performance with plenty to work on.
