Wests Tigers coach Ivan Cleary fails to turn up to club's grand final lunch

Speculation that coach Ivan Cleary is on his way out at the Wests Tigers has resurfaced, after he didn't turn up to the club's grand final luncheon.

Tigers players gathered at Le Montage restaurant in Lilyfield on Friday, but Cleary wasn't present.

Earlier this month, Cleary's son, Penrith halfback Nathan, signed a four-year multi-million dollar extension with the Panthers until the end of the 2023 season.

Given both Ivan and Nathan have previously stated their desire to work together, it appears only a matter of time before Ivan rejoins Penrith to link up with Nathan.

Ivan is contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2020, but the joint venture may conclude his position is untenable and release him, given it's highly likely he's already agreed to coach the Panthers from 2021 onwards.

Journalist James Hooper said that while no other members of the Tigers' coaching staff turned up at the luncheon, it was odd for the head coach not to be present.

"It was interesting yesterday. The Wests Tigers had a grand final luncheon at La Montage, and read into this what you will, but the head coach Ivan Cleary wasn't there," Hooper told Triple M NRL.

"Now, in his defence, nor were any of the other Tigers coaching staff. But at the same time, it does seem a little bit weird that you have grand final lunch (and the coach isn't there).

"I've been to those sorts of things previously and I have seen head coaches at those style of events.

"All the talk continues to swirl that (Ivan has) agreed with Penrith for when his Tigers contract finishes, and then the Tigers have got a decision to make about whether they're going to pursue a Michael Maguire, a Wayne Bennett, and they could decide that they're going to let Ivan go as early as November."

Interestingly, fellow panellist and 2003 Penrith premiership winner Ryan Girdler said he attended a Wests Tigers grand final luncheon in the last couple of years, and Cleary was there.

"I was at the Wests Tigers (grand final luncheon) either last year or the year before and I basically sat with Ivan," Girdler interjected with.

The main speculation for the Tigers over the off season and potentially into 2019 will be around Cleary. Kind of sad seeing as it looked like they were just getting their act together after the tail end of the Sheens era and the Potter/Taylor years which were full of dramas.

I've had a soft spot for the Tigers from back in the Balmain Tigers days.

Just heard its a done deal, Ivan to the Panther next season, he has walk out on the Tigers remaining two years of his contact.
Really lost on this one. Sure as a father you would want to coach your son, I get that. But why on earth would you leave the club that has given you a life line, to go back to the club that almost ended your coaching career in the first place.

I guess money does strange things to people. I really do feel sorry for the Tigers and their FANS. Just doesn't add up to me, maybe someone on here who knows more can answer this better....

Why did the Tigers just not do what ever to get Nathan at the club, to keep both of them together, and why did Ivan let go the stars the Tigers already had in their number 7 and 1. Or was that nothing to do with Ivan.

Im not sure about this one. I used to think Ivan was one of the real good guys in rugby league, hes definitely lost that aura if he up and leaves the Ligers. Will be hugely dissapointing for the likes of Mutz/Packer etc. who came there to play for him aswell. He got everyone on the bus, but slept in himself and missed it.

Will be crazy if Wayne Bennett ends up there.

Madge has formally turned Manly down, so maybe he is headed to Brisbane?

Simple reason... they need Ivan to ensure they kept Nathan
Which shows Penrith and Gould are in panic mode.
ell said.
That and showing his personal lack of integrity. It's a downward spiral... and folks outside of Penrith will have long memories.
When Ivan was at this club he showed immense personal integrity both as a player and a coach. I find it hard to understand he has done this, and I think it is a mistake.

He's almost there - to being an asshole to be coached by.

He should be made - legally - to see out his last two years. Hands off all recruitment and release decisions.

Unless he can play it that he's leaving now because the Tigers made the first move to talk to Bennett about coming in for 2019, so it was jumped or get pushed?

I really hope the Tigers weren’t strong armed into. Personally I hope the Panthers had to give up something to get Cleary back, such as a big behind the scenes payment.
If not then it’s a really bad look for both clubs, Cleary and the NRL.

Cleary first NRL club was here
We had a mud roster .No one wanted to come here
An little resources being put back into the club.
He coached us into a competitive team .
An we were prepared to shaft him

The panthers was his opportunity resources available
Players willing to go there ..
Unfortunately their was a power struggle between him an
Gould
Obviously these issues would have been ironed out
During negotiations ..
He's going back to finish what he started at the Panthers .
This is the coaching shot he deserves .His team he helped
Rebuild an one with the roster an resources to go all the way.
Can't blame the guy

Tigers were screwed before he got there
Mutts an Packer made their own decisions to
Wind up where they are .both are victims of their
Own life choices
Cleary didn't owe them anything.

I think there are some rose coloured glasses being worn. He had 6 years here and if it wasn't for kick to Manu being his go to, we were no better than average. As he has proved to be elsewhere, both at the Panthers and the Tigers.
He was given a lifeline by Wests after a long 'rest' and has blown it back in their faces at the first opportunity. I for one reckon he has an obligation to Wests to see out his contract on integrity basis alone should Wests request him to do so, rather than purely engineer something for his personal benefit, which he seems to be right in the middle of organising. He's certainly lost a great deal of personal integrity in this scam.
