Wests Tigers today confirmed the appointment of Mick Potter as the Club’s new NRL Coach for the next two seasons.
The appointment was made following a thorough selection process undertaken by the Club.
Potter was a Premiership winner as a player with the Canterbury Bulldogs in 1984 and 1985. He was also a dual winner of the Dally M Player of the Year Award during an outstanding 201 game career.
Since his retirement as a player, Potter has become one of the most respected coaches in the English Super League, having coached Catalan, St Helens and Bradford with great distinction.
He received the coveted Super League Coach of the Year Award in 2008 and again in the recently completed 2012 season.
Potter becomes the Club’s fourth NRL Coach since its first season in 2000.
Wests Tigers Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys said it was very positive to attract such a well credentialed and respected Coach to take the Club into the future.
“We are thrilled to secure Mick’s services for the next couple of seasons,” Humphreys said.
“Mick has enjoyed considerable success in Europe and we have no doubt that he is ready for the challenge that the NRL will present.
“We see him as the perfect person for the role. He has demonstrated his qualities as a Coach in a range of differing circumstances over the last seven years. He will bring not only this experience but importantly, also a fresh pair of eyes and a new energy to our Club.”
Potter said that it was a great honour to join a Club like Wests Tigers.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity”, he said.
“The Club has some promising young talent coming through the ranks, mixed in with some world-class players as well. The playing roster is full of potential and I can’t wait to start working with the group.
“This role will be a big challenge for me but it’s one that I will approach with lots of confidence and enthusiasm.”
The squad will be back into full training in early November and Potter confirmed that it will now be full steam ahead.
“I have officially commenced with Wests Tigers as of today. I have already been briefed on our pre season training plan. I was very impressed with the plan and have given it my full endorsement.
“I will be working hard with our support staff in preparation for the players assembling in a couple of weeks.”

Yeah I queried this last week, when there was a lot of discussion on Tigers forums regarding him. Also a couple of ex players stating last week that he was signed, sealed and delivered. Oh well.

Justin Morgan not going to be Raiders assistant next year. Coming here perhaps?
IMO I'll be surprised if Morgan comes, if Iro is still in the picture, 2x guys passed over for the top job more then once, waiting to see what opportunities come up under ME, long term TBH there will be problems.

Elliott said he already had somebody in mind. I believe it was Potter. They worked together in the super League. Wouldnt have been Morgan or why did Morgan apply for the top job? More questions then answers??? For all we know it might be his other long time friend Brian Smith??? Round 1 of 2013 couldnt come soon enough...

or Brian's son Rohan or younger brother Tony (don't think he will play second fiddle, though he wants to coach NRL in a interview this year)
Hope this assistant coach job doesn't get to messy.

I reckon with Tony Iro in the mix its going to as messy as an open love triangle worthy of Days of Our Lives! Should make for good viewing and posting. Probably set the team unity back at least half a season though...

*by the way, I hear mostly good things about Brother Smith.

In the interview with Veitch, Elliott said the coach he had lined up for the assistant spot was an ESL head coach without NRL head coach experience, so that would rule out B.Smith.

I also believe he was talking about M.Potter, but if he wasn't then Morgan and T.Smith both qualify.

Facebook/NRL Gossip: Unconfirmed reports that Panthers boss Phil Gould has called in some help for Ivan Cleary next year, with Trent Barrett to be Assistant Coach.
Come on HQ, give us someone to get excited about...!
