General Warriors SG Ball 2023

Second half was like watching people waiting around an emergency room to be seen by a doctor.

The ref let the clock run down, so they only played about 60mins instead of 70mins with 30 cramp breaks. Where are the 80min players?

The team are too bulky across the board and unfit, as soon as they hit an unsympathetic ref (next week for sure) they'll be swamped.
It's not even an 80 minute game in SG Ball 😂

It's the opposite. It's a lack of goal kicking keeping them in it. A dismal unbelievabe miss from 10 yards in front.
Solid defense at the end there though. They should have been a try up, silly errors could have cost them.

From what I saw
1 Naborisi
5 Sio Kali
8 Tanner Look at Me Stowers-Smith
and 6 Piliu look like decent players.

Apparently Adam Blair has had that squad since November and that's how fit they are. Dropping like flies, struggling to play 60 mins.
So no fitness training and I didn't see much evidence of basic structure either, they must meet a Maccas for their 2-hour 'trainings'.

Traditionally the first trial game is to give the less experienced guys some valuable game time and then those on the periphery given a run to see if they impress to continue with the top squad.
It’s a chance for those 3 NSW Cup guys promoted to train to impress and the young guys who have been training with the seniors and how they stack up against bigger bodies.
Should be an interesting trial non the less following positive chatter coming out of the club by many of the guys.

When the full time whistle blows after 58 or so absorbing minutes—mostly of sunshine and pickle-juice—I suppose a win is a win.

Also, it's our first tottering baby step back into having junior football like a real grown up rugby league club.

It's just a shame that after taking that baby step half the team fell down with cramp...

As Jake the Muss said, "too much weights, not enough speed work."

We played well for our first up game back after years off due to covid. Sure there is a lot to work on, we definaltly looked more cohesive with a controlling 9, Fuka Fuka has individual brillance but needs to work on his passsing game. Theres some serious talent in that team & we did win, We will have a bigger upside in a month or so BUT we need to have better shape on attack , rather than rely on individual trys

Wowwww there’s some harsh critics. They got the win. It’s the first SG ball side in 2 years. Our development has been decimated. Most of these kids haven’t been allowed to play sport for two years, on and off. Most are from rugby backgrounds (because of our dev pathways getting wrecked). Their first game in aus, totally different heat to Auckland & people ripping them apart for lack of fitness. The Rabbitohs players were dropping with cramp too.

Standouts:
Sio Kali
Fukafuka
Naborosi
Halasima
Stowers-Smith

We also got to have better urgency/defensive reads when thrown shapes. Give up the edge way too easily.
Also, they don't move forward as a line, just catch tackle. It's a Kiwi thing, cause you trust yourself to not miss.

We should celebrate the win, given the seniors' hellish first half draw it may be our only win for a while.

I actually think Leka Halasima was better today in the same role

I love Tanner and he was good today, but I agree, I thought Halasima was easily best on ground for the Warriors today.

Every tackle and run was full of aggression from minute 1 to 80.

Ratu Naborisi is raw but electric as hell. He was dynamite in the Dean Bell cup final too if I recall it right.

And credit to Adam Blair, you don’t normally associate Warriors teams for defensive resilience.

Great game that.

Always exciting seeing the kids play.

Congratulations Adam Blair on your coaching debut mate.

As expected the Rabbitohs Juniors are well drilled and have nice shapes in attack, their left edge attack was really nice in the first half.

I thought our try line effort was excellent, we conceded a couple defending our half of the field but they were out wide, the ruck defence of the baby Warriors was as good as the opposition.

If you go back and watch the first half, our Prop with blonde hair (number 10, excuse the no names..no don't be lazy...just googled the side Harry Durbin is the lad) is the best defender in the side, Rabbits had a free reign after he went off. His grapple is awesome, he pretty much single handedly slowed the roll on of the Rabbits on their favoured attacking side.

Rare to see someone that young so skilled at wrapping up the ball and putting runners on their back...I just hope he gets bigger and more powerful coming forward because for mine he was close to player of the day.....but you cannot go past our 9 for best on the park both sides.

Kayliss Fatialofa Number 11, rangey player, nice footwork at the line, Selumiela Halasima13, same, and a good tackle on him.

We usually over emphasize big running Juniors....this team has a refreshingly nice look to a more skilful type player.

I love that our whole spine likes to put foot to ball in attack.

I just wish this team and Blair had a foundation behind them that could take these kids and coach them intensively on all the skills they have missed out on through no fault of their own.

Anyway our little hooker at 9 is a future NRL star Fukofuka, and you can see with the right coaching (Blair is an excellent choice) that this side could be a little bit special...remember this was their raw no nothing never played together run......

Lots to love about what I saw....perhaps the sleeping Giant is back.

Second half was a different game....less to learn from watching that usual jnr back and forth loose footy, but it only served to lay a platform for Blair style tackling football. The first half is what held my interest most.....a green Warriors kids side hanging in a tight contest...that is the shit we need to see. The second half was more an emotional pride feeling seeing them stand up in defence.

The lad with the Red Cap Tanner Stowers everyone was going on about was good. But my attention was elsewhere, looking for skills at his age group rather than athleticism, one you can assume in a NZ player, athletes are dime a dozen, skills are quite another thing entirely they take confidence, effort, practice and smarts.

Would like to see more of Tanner Stowers before making up me mind, I did like this snapshot but.

Same goes for the rest, too early to tell who is who...the bench hooker is another I really would like to see more of now we know how good the starting hooker is.
