A change in ownership for the Warriors rugby league club is in the works.

The Herald understands a deal with new owners was agreed to in principle yesterday - respected player agent Peter Brown is thought to be one of two new investors in the club.

Kiwi millionaire Eric Watson has owned the club for the past 17 years but is currently fighting fellow Kiwi rich-lister Owen Glenn in UK court over ownership of assets in a project the pair were involved in.

Whispers of managing director Jim Doyle, who bought a 10 percent share in the club last year, buying a bigger share have done the rounds the past couple of weeks.

The Herald approached both Doyle and Brown for comment - both denied that any deal had been struck. Brown denied any involvement in buying the club at all.

But the story was confirmed by a number of sources including one with direct knowledge of the agreement, who spoke under condition of anonymity.

Watson bought the struggling franchise in 2000 from a consortium that included the Tainui tribe and former Kiwis coach Graham Lowe.

He oversaw a rebranding of the club and the club's maiden grand final appearance in 2002.

A second grand final appearance followed in 2011. Fellow Kiwi businessman Glenn bought a 50 percent share of the club from Watson in late 2011 but the club has failed to make the finals in every year since.

Glenn relinquished his share after a falling-out with Watson in 2015 - Doyle then purchased his 10 percent share of the club last year.

Watson is currently involved in a bitter dispute with Glenn and is facing having to pay out the Kiwi businessman an amount of more than $200m.

The Warriors face the Canberra Raiders at Mt Smart Stadium at 4pm today and are out of playoff running.

A part owner who represents quite a few warriors players as their agent. WTF?
This would be the first nail in the coffin.

If he has noone worthwhile left on his books the Warriors might get his scraps. Lining his own pocket then folding up the club when the fans finally give up.

Awesome.

As you all know I posted rumors about possible club buy out a couple of weeks ago in Eric Watson thread.

What I heard then still hasn't change as people who told me about club buy out are still telling me same things.

Jim Doyle has bought club along with four to five investors acting as consortium. Whether this is all true or not we will find out in next few days.

Personally speaking I am happy with news if it is Jim Doyle as this club needs somebody pro active to take it forward and make positive changes.

Let's just hope that whoever our new owners are that this is start of brand new beginning.

Go NZ Warriors ! :)

Edit : Just got txt saying Peter Brown is supposedly representing new group of co-owners ...

It was expected that EW was going to sell as we have discussed this on the forum a few weeks ago.

Interesting that Peter Brown is involved.

If he based the value of the club on win/loss results he would have got it for a Bargain.

Dude is loaded. Could very well be true. Thankfully he's a much better businessman than he ever was a league player...

Yeah the thing is why I think it's a joke is the same txt that I got saying Marc Ellis is one of investors also mentioned Jacinda Ardern, Scribe, Kiwi author Keri Hulme, Sale Of Century Steve Parr, Peter Jackson and Suzy Cato. So yeah, sorry about that dude but that one is definitely a joke ...

I will laugh though if turns out to be North Sydney Bears. Scream, shout, curse and cry uncontrollably but still laugh ...

:(

Suzie Cato would be good, she could sing at the start of every training.
