Warriors bosses have rolled out the red carpet for All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu, giving him free rein to train with the squad as often as he likes.

The instantly recognisable Lomu appeared at Warriors training from time to time during the 2007 season and was a regular fixture in the dressing room after home games.

During the week, Sunday News witnessed him going through the pre-season motions with the Warriors squad at Mt Smart Stadium and director of football John Hart said Lomu would always be welcome.

"He wants to keep fit basically. He loves the Warriors and he went and watched them a lot last year," said Hart.

"He trained a bit with us last season so he's doing no more than he was doing earlier in the year.

"He's running with them and enjoying it I think."

Lomu made contact with the Warriors through his former All Blacks coach and Hart said the benefits of having such a high-profile athlete on the paddock were not lost on the players.

"One of the tragedies that I see with Jonah is that New Zealand rugby hasn't really used him," said Hart.

"He's a legend overseas. You only had to be at the World Cup to see whose face was the face at the World Cup all the time it was Jonah.

"He's so professional and just having him around the guys with the aura he rubs off is just tremendous."

Lomu's name has been linked to Russell Crowe's South Sydney Rabbitohs for next year's one-off Charity Shield clash against the St George Illawarra Dragons.

Negotiations appear to have stalled in recent weeks and Hart said he was unsure of his former star winger's next move.

"I don't think he's on any set programme at all. It's over to him and he's welcome to come and train with us whenever he wants to come along at the moment," said Hart.

"I think he's just trying to keep fit to give himself options to think about.

"I don't think he's made any decisions on what he's doing really.

"It's really about doing a bit of fitness work to keep himself trim and I'm not sure what he's going to do."

When asked whether fans could expect to see Lomu in a Warriors jersey in the near future, Hart had little to say.

"I think that's way out there," he joked.

this has probably been aired before, but, are we going to see Lomu in the Warriors strip this year? :behindsofa:

I very much doubt it but anything is possible.
Do you think he could handle playing rugby league at NRL level???

No, Lomu won't be a Warrior, and he wouldn't be up to NRL standard. A one off fixture in an exhibition match would do him no harm, though, so the Charity Shield idea isn't a bad one.

Yeah a man who weighs in at 120kg and runs a 100m in about 12 seconds would be rubbish in the NRL.

..........I don't want to see Jonah play but this is a cool story...... and I don't think he is up to NRL standard, 2-3 years ago maybe-yes he would of been.

I'm not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic, there, mate!

I definitely agree that pre-liver transplant Jonah would have been nigh on unstoppable, though.

His dedication to a club that he has never had any financial ties to is very, very impressive.

He did that? Wow. I know he could run over players..lol but that quick..pretty freakish almost esp back then

Thats what everyones saying Jesbass, that he wont be the same again because of health reasons.. but then Jonah himself dispelled that idea (in an interview a few years ago) because he's been playing with serious health problems for most of his career.

Yep, he could reach top speed within about three steps, which is precisely why there were comparisons between him and Vatuvei when Manu first came on the scene.

I wasn't aware of that jahc, but I'm assuming the kidney transplant was the most major of said serious health problems...?

While his goals have previously been understandably high, (2007 rugby union World Cup, for example), I don't perceive him to be quite able to return to those lofty heights. Clearly his wife doesn't either, after that escapade putting him on This Is Your Life. :/

I don't think he had 'top speed' so to speak. I remember seeing him all those games for the Abs and things where he looked like he barely needed to get out of first gear. Always looked like he was in cruise mode and everyone else just looked slow

............I am not sure either :(

And just between you and I it was a kidney transplant.

Speaking of liver transplants though, George Best had one. 6 months later he was found celebrating, with booze... Kind of defeats the purpose really.

Lol, I called it a liver in one post, and a kdiney in the other...lol. :kev:

George Best was a renowned drinker. He died of a heart attack at 61 years of age, but that liver transplant was only going to do a certain amount of good with his addiction still very much intact.
