Haha, yes nutjob greens is a bit unfair. Name calling is never the best approach ;)

The wealth tax is all kinds of silly though. Only country that I know of that has implemented one is the super oil rich Norway. And they are now seeing a withdrawl of capital from the country. What we need is fairness in our tax system, CGT, Land Tax but not at the expense of investment.

Have we talked about an upper age limit for politicians?
Was listening to a BBC World program about Norway the other night, big changes there as they're facing not being one of the wealthiest countries anymore because of phasing out fossil fuels, cost of living crisis and a lot of other probs. The indigenous Sami population are fighting to preserve their traditional land from being taken by wind generation and developers, all sounded familiar to NZ issues as they gradually slip down the wealth chain and can't afford the cradle to grave social safety net they used to enjoy.

The thing with these public service cuts is that there really is 1 out of every 10 back office staff (not 1 in 4, that MoH announced that’s insane) that wouldn’t be missed and just sort of mooch from agency to agency because they have good people skills but don’t actually do anything, or nothing that couldn’t be absorbed by others without much difficulty (I have been this person on occasion).

But that’s not who gets let go in restructuring it’s a combination of the smart young ones you don’t want to lose who voluntarily go overseas or join the private sector and the old grumps who complain the loudest and annoy management but have a huge amount of institutional knowledge - you also don’t want to lose them.

Also a senior manager costs twice the amount of a senior specialist and they don’t tend to propose that their role goes away

I wouldn’t mind seeing some sort of pro rata calculation for super. As in, you’ve been in NZ for x % of your life after turning 18, therefore are eligible for x% of super. The reason being people are rewarded super on a proportional basis of contributing to NZ. I say this despite living overseas for 4-5 years

At the moment, you only have to have been in NZ for 10 years.

That should trim the super bill

How would the more recent immigrants survive if they don't have savings though

It's not brought to us by the fossil fuel industry... is it?
I haven’t looked into who financed it. Just like I don’t look into the numerous interests who finance glowing renewables articles. The proof is in the empirical data. Not the modeling data.

It’s a worrying sign to attempt to gate keep the information you receive by the source rather than the quality. I thought we learned our lessons after the Ukraine propaganda shocker’s 👀.

Yeah but this movie can misrepresent empirical data too and present whatever conclusions if they have an agenda. Since neither of us are physics or climate PhDs how do we know.

True. It wouldn’t be perfect, but it would be fairer in my view. Someone that contributes to NZ for all of their life would get more vs someone living here for 10 years before they retire

This suggestion is done under the assumption that super will be quite expensive for NZ

Homeless elderly could cause expensive social problems too, might be cheaper to just give them their $400 a week

Norway built its entire fortune off oil and gas. They are wasting billions by trying to be renewable heroes.

Man, it's hard dealing with banks at the moment.

We're wanting to put part of our mortgage on Interest Only for six months so that the amount we pay each fortnight remains the same. But, because there's a very slight possibility that the interest rates may not change enough, the bank is concerned that we may be forced to pay more at the end of that time and want us to go through an application process providing proof of income and expenses.

Of course, it's highly likely interest rates will have continued to drop and it won't be an issue.

The stupid thing is, if we continue to pay the entire loan as Principle and Interest, our fortnightly repayments will go up over $300 but the bank don't need proof of income and expenses to see if we can afford that.

How dumb is this? Provide them proof that we can afford to pay what we're already paying but give them no proof to pay them more.
Hell yeah, I tried to get a credit card last week at a new bank. Family home is mortgage free, got a job that pays well, wife works at a good job, one kid works so only supporting one. After one hour interview they ring back later in the day, no sorry you spend too much.

They literally address that. And they use IPCC, US Govt and the Brit historical record. All are reknowned sources.

I’d google Roy Spencer. He literally built the satellites at NASA that record temp. I’d believe those scientists over politicians and children.

It’s the exact same MO as COVID. Control and money. Trillions of dollars of taxpayer money being funnelled to interest groups.

And yet, every day we deposit money into banks and they basically borrow money from us. I wonder what their reaction would be if every time we let them borrow our money, if we asked to see all their transactions for the last three months and decided we’d reject them.

Does the revelation that most housing 'investors' have to top up payments mean that the bulk of 'investors' are actually speculators.

TBH, I don't think it's a revelation... most will be using equity in the family home as their deposit so are probably borrowing up 100% of the purchase price.

CoreLogic data from 2019 suggested that the average length that a landlord owned a property was 7.4 years. I wonder if the Brightline test adjustment made in 2021 to ten years for older homes and five years for qualifying new builds pushed that out.

It would be interesting if the change to the property managers registration act that the Greens are proposing to have a registration of landlords and the properties they won would provide more accurate information. It would certainly end the current fighting between National and Labour over the number of mega landlords.
