So haven’t heard much about this, the warriors will officially have a team in the NSW cup U20s comp?

Which will be basically the same standard as the old U20s, they just won’t have games in Melbourne or QLD?

Or now that the comp has a bit less prestige, less tv coverage, they now wearing a wentworthville jersey instead of a eels one, will the standard of players drop a bit, with the gun 19 year olds being sent to reserve grade. The warriors are already doing this, but will it become the norm?

The Toyota cup / Holden cup did give some good memories, but mostly just confused me as to how some players like Sam Lisone can be so dominant at one level and so mediocre at the next.

Maybe better to have it off of TV and keep the expectations low. Watching those skinny kids fumble about for the warriors last year just made you realise this isn’t anywhere near the level of professional sport and shouldn’t judge them so much.

U20’s is basically like a game of touch. Tackle is something they think you go fishing with.
While there was a lot of exposure on TV, in terms of player development it did fuck all. Guys who dominated in the U20’s were soon found out once they got to ISP or NRL level. Not too sure why the coaching staff at the various
clubs never addressed these defensive issues. They were probably showing better defence at there junior clubs, than at the U20 level

Reintroducing Jersey Flegg

The Jersey Flegg Cup is back in 2018 after a 10-year absence, with the NSWRL reviving the historic competition following the cessation of the NRL-run under-20s National Youth Competition.

The competition is named after Harry “Jersey” Flegg, who played for the Eastern Suburbs in 1908 and 1909, and was a prominent administrator of the game up until 1960.

It began as an under-19s age group until the NRL formed in 1998, and was originally held as part of the NSWRL’s junior representative season that was played over nine-to-12 weeks early in the season.

“It’s fantastic to revive the Jersey Flegg in 2018 after a 10-year absence,” NSWRL General Manager of Football Barrie-Jon Mather tells NSWRL.com.au.

“There is now a stronger link between the junior and senior competitions with players from the SG Ball having the opportunity to play in the Jersey Flegg before making the jump to the Intrust Super Premiership NSW and beyond.

“The season will run for 21 rounds over a 25-week period that includes two two-week breaks in May and July, with an additional bye being given to each team that results in a 20-game season proper.”

What is the Jersey Flegg Cup?
Quite simply, it is a Rugby League competition played in New South Wales made up of players aged under 20 that effectively replaces the Holden Cup.

How many teams are playing in the Jersey Flegg?
The major difference to the old Holden Cup is that no Queensland or Victorian-based teams will play in the Jersey Flegg competition; 11 NSW clubs as well as the New Zealand Warriors have entered teams to make a 12-team competition in line with the Intrust Super Premiership NSW.

What teams are playing in the Jersey Flegg?
Ten of the 12 clubs will enter a team under their NRL brand, with only the South Sydney Rabbitohs (North Sydney Bears) and Canberra (Mounties) affiliating with their feeder club for the competition.

Teams:
  • Newcastle Knights
  • Manly Sea Eagles
  • Wests Tigers
  • Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
  • Penrith Panthers
  • Parramatta Eels
  • Mounties
  • North Sydney Bears
  • Cronulla Sharks
  • St George Illawarra Dragons
  • New Zealand Warriors
  • Sydney Roosters
When will the Jersey Flegg Grand Final be played?
The Jersey Flegg Grand Final will be played on the same day as the Intrust Super Premiership, Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield Grand Finals, one week prior to the NRL Grand Final.

How long are the halves in Jersey Flegg games?
Just like the SG Ball, Jersey Flegg matches consist of 35-minute halves to coincide with the Queensland Hastings Deering Colts under-20s competition.

What happened to the Holden Cup?
As part of the recent NRL-led pathway review, the Holden Cup was replaced by two state-run competitions in order to give more athletes an opportunity to progress to play at the highest level.

Who has won the most Jersey Flegg premierships?
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are the most successful team in the history of Jersey Flegg, winning nine premierships since the competition commenced in 1961, and won four premierships from 1999-2003. However, the most dominant season in Jersey Flegg history came in 2004, when the Sydney Roosters won the competition without losing a single game.

Who won the most recent Jersey Flegg Grand Final?
Penrith won the most recent Jersey Flegg premiership in 2007, technically making them the reigning premiers in two NSWRL competitions as following their triumph in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW last year.

Is the competition being televised?
In 2018 FOX LEAGUE and Channel 9 are increasing their commitment to the NSWRL’s blue-ribbon competition, the Intrust Super Premiership NSW. At this stage there is no plan to telecast the Jersey Flegg competition but NSWRL.com.au may live stream select matches throughout the season including the finals series.

How do I keep up to date on the Jersey Flegg Cup in 2018?
There will be full weekly highlights, news articles, feature stories and more appearing each week on NSWRL.com.au.

When will the 2018 Jersey Flegg Cup draw be released?
The 2018 Jersey Flegg draw will be released in coming weeks ahead of the competition. Stay locked on NSWRL.com.au for the latest information as it comes to hand.

That is fair. The TV exposure of the under 20s made some of them think they were superstars.

Excellent news! So pleased to see Doyle got us in there. mt.wellington didn't you say the potential buyers put the kibosh on this?

The high profile of the 20s comp worked to attract players to the Warriors and to get NZ boys to Sydney clubs too.

That was the ARL. They had informed parents of signed players that the proposed HG Ball Cup team (which is the NSW U18 comp) that the Warriors were entering would be scrapped in favour of a local beefed up comp. Unsure if the Jersey Flegg were part of that. Shows how advanced selling negotiations between the ARL and Warriors had gotten. Haven't spoken to my source on the HG Ball thing since he told me the club had been sold...

Hopefully the club does get in the HG Ball as well. Sure it will be expensive with more players to have on their books and travel expenses but it would help with player development with guys coming through from a younger age all while being in Warriors colours.

The Jersey Flegg not being televised compared to the old under 20's means one advantage we had signing youngsters is gone. Remember in the early days of the 20's articles about some players choosing league over traditional first 15 union as they get on TV every week along with travel etc. However the flip side to that is that being on TV/Under 20's could be as far as some wish to get to, this way we may get guys fully focused on a league career.

Awesome. I am really looking forward to seeing both these games live on Saturday especially with some of our young players that we've got coming through. Who else will be going ? :)

Anyone know what’s become of Israel Ogden? looked a real talent last season.

Did his ACL last year.
Jeez thats concerning so early in his career, I wonder if the risk of this increases when newly 17 year olds like Ogden are playing against more developed 20 year olds. Regardless, I still have Israel Ogden pegged as one of the best prospects at the club yet to debut, up there with Perham and HarrisTavita.

Anyone got intel on the new guys?

Obviously Patrick Elia was a highly sought after signing for them.

Anyone know where Tyler Slade is? Looked like he had potential to be Simon Mannering 2.0 last year.
