General Warriors fun draft from 1995 onwards

Just an idea, but you could instead of voting for the team you like, do a playoff style competition and ask people to vote for the team they think would win the match up. Managers could then do a write up before their game to talk about how they would beat their respective opponent.

For Example:

1st Round
a) Rynonz vs PullinTeeth
b) Tajhay vs Weno
c) BoatsnHoes vs Warriors55
d) Wizards Rage vs Bye

2nd round
e) a winner vs b winner
f) c winner vs d winner

Finals
g) e winner vs f winner
Weno v Tajhay

Tajhay has one of the most solid backllines and backrows with two high power running props with Joe who can smash the buggery out of any ball carrier.
Tajhay's Fulback and halves are the exception and that's where he has it over every team.
X-Factor in these three men.

Team Weno

Cappy defensive game plan.

Greg Alexander will control this whole game with his A Class kicking game.
Roger Tuivasa-Sheck ,Hoppe and Hape will be nullified as Brandy wont be keeping the ball in and should slow up the start of there sets.

The on form Betts and Dean Bell will make it a hard day for Fai and Skinny so Cappy will have our pitbull Berrigan in Fai' and Skinnys defensive ear all day.
They will be we supported defensively with the reliable Koopu who can a dish out a big shot or two.
Cappy says they must hold that line with the X Factor Shaun Johnson just needing a half gap or less to wreck havoc .
If successful he should be ineffective.

Konnie and Sione have a harder task on there side with Hoffman in his time the best hole runner in the NRL/World, and the underrated ball playing center Joel Moon.
Brandy will need to be up for this task and keep Konnie on his toes.
When on our line,Carlaw swaps over with Konnie to sure up the D and should close the threat of a dangerous rampaging Hoffman,Moon is a different threat with his elusive running style and ability to hold up the line will be just what Hohaia needs to snipe in.
Hohaia is the same as his strength and power is not to be underestimated, his speed and footwork is sublime so if Konnie can listen to Brandy and stand his ground.
Then Famauina should be able to smash the buggery out of Hoffman and Moon.

Thomas on his day is sublime at dummy half
He has the the front row to make the yards with Hitro's high octane running and the big block Joe Vagana will make it a tough day at the office and open space as defensive numbers come in it should give Thomas easy pickings to scoop and shoot from dummy half.
Sam and Feka will be able to tie them up but this is where Cappy sayThe Doctor specifically comes in to fix this issue up.
Death has the mission to grass cut them all day and tire them out as durability is the pairs weakness, when there punch is gone Cappy says we will get our advantage on attack .

Jazz should be suspended but if playing Cappys pressure on defence should have him in brain explosion mode which means errors.

Cappys defensive plan, what you got Tajhay.

You are right there about the Tony's. I was weighing up Martin, Hiku and a player I was also surprised that wasn't taken - Vinnie Anderson.

Selecting these teams and watching the old footage has made me realize how poor our current NRL team is and how poor our game plan and coaching is.
I had French International and speed merchant Justin Murphy and hooker George Gatis in mind.
Gatis if Mears went.
Murphy last resort , alway reliable for us.
Louie Anderson who was one of our better attacking back rowers was on my list but I needed a workhorse.
Was expecting Death to go and was surprised so took the chance and Louie missed out.

Wizards Warriors vs the bye

The boys turn on the TV and watch the other teams bash the shit out of each other. They know the top ranked team always gets the bye but are feeling no pressure, just an almost arrogant confidence driven by Ridges team talks.

No injuries to report...

Maumalo has a minor finger strain while going hard on PlayStation and pongia is coming off a weeks suspension but he’s used to that. Luck needs a few stitches removed but he will be good to go.

We should be injury free and well rested and ready to face an injury depleted team after some fierce battles going into round 2.

Agreed on Vinnie, he’s a better centre than some of the picks. I thought his brother Louis was pretty solid as well when he played for us.

I think in real sport there are a small handful of elite players and a whole lot of journeymen.

Same with this, we pick out the elite players and then it’s a lot of good solid players to round out the teams. Between those second tier players they all have strengths and more obvious weaknesses (even if it is just a lack of any strengths) and it depend on what you value in a player.

I think Ryno has the best team, strong forwards, outside backs are good, centres would be the only question mark. Laumape never got a decent run at the Warriors and I was never a big fan of Iro.

I know these three arent in the same team but McKinnon pre-injuries in his prime paired with Jones and Maloney would have been great to watch. Maloney had a great kicking game and support play, McKinnon was lightning and strong though the tackle, and Jones had that burst of pace and great vision. All 3 in their prime were quick and great support runners

Here is my write up of my team guys -

1. Ivan Cleary (gk)
2. Henry Fa'afili
3. Peta Hiku
4. Jerome Ropati
5. Krisnan Inu
6. Chad Townsend
7. Kieran Foran
8. Ruben Wiki (c)
9. PJ Marsh
10. Andy Platt
11. Joe Galuvao
12. Awen Guttenbeil
13. Ben Henry

Coach: John Monie

Fullback – I have the ultra-reliable Ivan Cleary. Smart footballer, good positional play, good defence and a sharpshooter from the kicking tee. Huge influence on us getting to the grand final in 2002.

Centres - I've decided to go with a player who has the silky ball-playing skills of a half – Peta Hiku. He is paired up with the immensely talented Jerome Ropati. There were not many better centres when he was fit and in form.

Wings – I have the mercurial Krisnan Inu who was one of the most dangerous players in the NRL when he was in form and Henry Fa’afili the expert finisher with some great try celebration moves!

Halves – I have selected Kieran Foran based on his Manly career. Takes the line on, had the best and hardest defensive game I have ever seen from a half and a good short kicking game. The other half is the calming influence of Chad Townsend who is a premiership winner with Cronulla. They compliment each other nicely.

Hooker – This was the person I wanted the most. PJ Marsh. Great running, passing and defensive game. Dynamite out of dummy half. It is no coincidence we made the grand final in 2002 with him driving the team around the park.

Front Row – Two hardened veterans. Ruben Wiki and Andy Platt. If we are judging the teams mainly based on overall career form and not Warriors form then Platt is a no-brainer. This guy was a titan of the game. Played a ton of games for St Helens, Wigan and Great Britain. Ruben Wiki was a devastating player with the Raiders and solid with the Warriors. Needs no introductions. He will be my captain. He has mana and the players will follow him.

Back Row – Here I have gone with one half of the hair bears Joe Galavao and the tough and reliable Awen Guttenbiel. Galavao was one of the most devastating, electric and powerful runners of the football especially when he was at the Panthers. Guttenbeil was tough, formidable and reliable. Can fu*ck people up at times as his hit on the Roosters I posted on this thread earlier.

Lock – Ben Henry is a player would have been a mainstay in our side for many years but had his career cruelly cut short by injury. Gave 100% every game. Made his tackles and a good link player.

Coach - I am going to go with John Monie who has the best overall coaching record out of all the options. Coached Paramatta to a premiership in the 80's. Also won 4 Championships and Challenge Cups in a row as Wigan coach which had never been achieved before or since. He also actually had a 55% win ratio as coach of the Warriors. This is better than Ivan Cleary who had a 49% win ratio.

As we are judging it across his whole coaching career he is the obvious choice for me.

I feel my team has good balance all the way through. Tough front rowers with big motors. They will lead by example. I have the best hooker that has played for the Warriors. Electric and tough edge forwards and a reliable lock forward. My back 3 compliment each other perfectly (one electric, one reliable and one a finisher) and my centres have good ball skills and offensive games. I have a great goalkicker and one of the toughest halves to ever play the game who is a premiership winner as well as another premiership winning half.

GAME PLAN

OFFENCE - (
Tackle 1) PJ Marsh will get me rolling up the field with my front rowers Wiki and Platt with Guttenbiel supporting. On (Tackle 2) Marsh will dart from dummy half to gain 15 metres around the ruck. On (Tackle 3) my halves will move it wider to the likes of Galuvao and Ropati to bust the line and look to offload. Then on (Tackle 4) Foran will take the line on and try to set up his outside men. Hiku feeding Fa’fali will be lethal. On the (Tast Tackle) Foran (Manly form) will put through a grubber or Townsend will bomb for Inu and Fa’afili. Or to mix things up Foran will throw a perfect cut out pass to set up my wingers.

DEFENCE - my team will be brutal. Wiki, Platt and Guttenbiel will stop players in their tracks. Ben Henry and PJ Marsh will be tackle machines with very few missed tackles. If the opposition break the line or go for a 40/20 Ivan Cleary will be there to clean up and also cover any defensive misreads by my centres.

Hope the voters can appreciate my team and the way I constructed it with the players available.

I think Ryno’s team is 12 points better than the others. Getting first pick was vital however the side is hard to fault - I’m not a fan of Ah Mau at lock and Botica is a bIt underwhelming however the rest of the team is very solid.

Two independents have vouched for Ryno. Will see if others weigh in over the course of his evening. Ryno ahead at the moment.

It is subjective though isn’t it & I’m prob a bit biased towards how players went at the Warriors. The likes of Brandy & Phil Blake were exceptional players earlier in their careers so others might be swayed more by those sorts of considerations.

I have assigned each player from every team a score out of 10.

I have a 2 way tie for 1st which includes my team. Then 2 teams tied 1 point back. Really close.

Will be interesting to see what people who did not take part and are impartial think of the teams.

Ryno’s team: Forwards pack is solid. A lot of big men, ultra consistent although probably lacking a real hard runner. Price, Lillyman and Ah Mau are possible to o similar but Luke would use them well.
Great halves although you would want to play sides as they are both more organising halves. Jones was the best first up pick and Botica provides the points. backs strong.

Pulling teeth: good forward pack with some hard runners. Back row could make or break the team - if Faleti is on they will rip teams apart; if he’s off form they may struggle for attacking options. Key man. Maloneys a winner in the halves. And is the second real key to getting the win.

Tajhay: would be a real contender and one of the teams to beat. Great props, 11,12,13 possible the teams only weakness, although still better than some. Would all come down to Shaun Johnson. If he’s on form he opens up the best backs chosen and in tandem with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck they will set up the platform to beat most other teams. If Shaun Johnson turns up...

Weno: another high impact set of props but endurance could be key for them. Back row is solid enough and Mears would work well in that lineup. Decent halves. The key for me is your centres. Could be the best or worst. Fai is unknown with limitless potential and Hurrel is a weapon in attack. They are both on and your backline will put a lot of point on.

Boats n Hoes: nice well rounded line up. Love that forward pack. Good mix of talent - up there with the best. Halves are relatively weak or though more unknown for me with how Tomkins would go in an NRL halves team. He is key in your team. Backs are up there with Tajhays as the best. Wingers are deadly if the halves can create room for them. And that is the challenge that could win or lose the competition.

Warrior55: Solid forward pack but a few journeymen. Foran and Townsend would work well together and the sum would be better than the individual. Possibly the best spine with Marsh? Backs are solid without being exceptional. Well rounded

Tough to say - really depends on how much weight u give their warriors career v their overall career.
I liked them all tbh but no sitting on the fence so I’ll take rynos team over tajhay in golden point with rynos last pick frano botica kicking the winning field goal- thought that was a clever pick up- was wondering who u were going to go with there and that forward pack is mint.

Does everyone want me to set up the polls for the playoffs? I will then copy and paste peoples current summaries of their teams?

And i will just change the poll in the same thread for the semi and final match ups.

Let's hear the first four teams.

It's a really close call. Let me give my quick analysis on each team.

Rhino - Good backs, very good halves, very good front row, decent back row. No real weaknesses here. McKinnon can be hot and cold. Possibly Leesan Ah Mau could be a weakness at 13.

Pullin Teeth - Decent back line. Halves are good, front row is good, good back row but Smith is a possible weakness there.

Tajhay - Pretty good back line, good halves, good front row. Pretty good backrow but Tevaga a weakness. Should have gone for Elijah Taylor at 13.

Weno - Good centres but back 3 a possible weakness. Good halves, good front row, pretty good back row.

BoatsnHoes - Very good back 3, decent centres, decent halves, decent front row, very good back row.

Warriors 55 - Good back 3, pretty good centres, pretty good halves, very good front row, good back row.

Wizards Rage - Very good back 3, good centres, halves a possible weakness (not your fault it came from us having last pick of the halves), decent front row, very good back row.

I have redone my ratings as impartially as I can. I have also now rated the coaches out of 10 as well. These are in a random order. I am only going to name the top 2 as I don't feel right naming all of the teams. Rhino is my champion but would like to see what other non-players think. It is really close between 4-5 teams. Keep in mind this is based on individual players only and not how they work together as a unit. That could change the rankings quite a bit.

Rhino - 111/140
Warriors55 - 110/140
110/140
109/140
107/140
105/140
105/140
