I just got back from the game and thought I'd let you guys know how it went. We won (don't quote me on this) 36-16. I think. Around that figure anyway. Here was my views on some players of intrest.

Kemp - About the same as he was in first grade. One half break, nothing else really. Solid, very unspectacular game. Didn't miss any tackles. His goal kicking was terrible though. Missed one from about 3 metres to the left of the posts.

Fien - The in-goals were smaller than Olympic Parks, so you know what his short kicking game was going to be like. I was impressed with him though, he organised his backline well. Wasn't heads and shoulders above everyone, but his passing game was great. Not too much to right home about his short kicking game, as usual, but he produced a few nice cross-field kicks and bombs.

Ta'ai - Probably the MOM, ran well out wide. I was impressed with not only the agression he was running with, but the lines he was running. He was hitting some very nice holes.

O'Regan - Quiet. Not really demanding a first grade spot. Solid game though.

Johns - Nowhere near ready to run the first grade team around, has to improve a heck of a lot to get a shot next year.

I won't go in to detail about everyone else, as they are pretty much all going to say the same thing. Everyone was solid, but pretty unspectacular. It was a great team win. #15 I will mention though, great attacking game. I'm not sure who he was, maybe Jeremiah Pai? I think that's his name.

Anyone else who went to the game have any opinions?

Henderson??

Henderson was not playing, due to his father passing. Aaron Pawley was the hooker for the Vulcans.

I hope Ben Matulino was taking notice of where Tai was standing & running, futher out, he made a lot of damage that way.

Godinet also played 40 or so mins there. Pretty decent too, nice line break out of dummy-half.

Couldn't get to the game unfortunately.

Good scalp for the Vulcans, Wentworthville are last years champs and beat the Newtown Jets 60 -10 just a few weeks ago.

If 15 had any flair it would've been Pai.

How did the Auckland vs Canterbury game go and what were the crowd numbers like?

How's Arron Pawley been going? Is he on the Warriors radar at all? He was contracted to the main squad this year for one season.

Auckland: 36 Canterbury: 20

Media Releases go out kiwi's....media (rugger centric) chooses not to publish

Part time contract, been alternating between Otahuhu and the Vulcans. He's very good but has a lot of 9s ahead of him at the Warriors this year which is why he can't cement a spot in the Vulcans and will have to content with Mara next year as well. He should try for a Qld Cup gig next year I reckon.

1200 spectators on Saturday according to the ARL site, not bad for crappy weather.

my bad about press releases. 1200 is a decent crowd for vulcans/ npc game. heard it was auckland league centenary. 36 - 20 seems a competitive score.

was reading that new nzrl has been given until spetember 30 to table a national domestic comp.

i hope they make it more along the lines of provincial football, at least outside of auckland anyway as for auckland im not shure how they would go about it?

split arl into 4 arl rep sides north harbour, central, west an south?

or have top club in each area of aucklnad in the national comp against provincal rep teams, (north harbour) northcote,(central) mt albert,(west) te atatu,(south) mangere east? if those club arnt strong enough to hold thier spot another club from thier area could replace them eg north harbour( hibiscus coast or east coast bays)?etc.

or get the warriors reserves/vulcans in the comp it would save the warriors/arl tons of cash sending players to play in a aussie comp and paying for away teams travel, boost the sport locally with fringe warriors on show every week in different parts of the country. as well as the vulcans/warriors reserves have an arl rep team in the comp. canterbury have shown they can put up a game and win a few against the full arl side in recent time, an wellington as well in the past.

the auckland sides could play geniune rep teams from wellington, waikato, canterbury, taranaki call the COMP NEW ZEALAND CUP. would be way better than batercard was.

we could have a mid season domsetic city vs country game? with the auckland side playing combining to play the a side from the rest of nz...

maybe keep a spot open in the kiwi's side for a local guy from the domestic player in the auckland city vs rest of country match even if they were to the 18th man for a test match...would be like the kiwi trials of old

anyway just my ideas

Dicky Knee is right, there was no press release just a report on the ARL website. Local league doesn't make the papers even at provincial level.

Where do they get the money from to run a national comp anyway? The NPC comp they had last year is an ideal size until they can grow the sport in areas outside the main centres except they could split Auckland into a North/West/Central and South/East teams depending on where the boundaries are set. That would stop a repeat of last year where Canterbury beat Auckland in pool play but Auckland got their Vulcans players for the final and smashed Canterbury. Auckland club vs province doesn't work either.

Yep, he was one of the blokes from U20s that I thought had a real future. Not necessarily a big fellow or a particular quick bloke, but I tell you what he's quick between the ears. He reminded me a lot of Danny Buderus last year with his ability to get out of dummy half, put his forwards over the advantage line and then work to a plan for later in the set.
