The Vodafone Warriors will provide an appetiser for their groundbreaking Community Carnival when they make a trip to Waiheke Island on Saturday, February 3.

Locals and holidaymakers turned out en masse when head coach Ivan Cleary and his staff worked their NRL squad during a highly-successful community visit a year ago.

This trip, ahead of the 2007 NRL season, will enable the public to see the players at work as they continue their build-up to pre-season trials against North Queensland and the Bulldogs. Spectators will also have the chance to meet the players later during an autograph-signing session.

“We had a really rewarding day out there last year and it’s great to be able to do it again,†said Cleary.

“We’re at a really important stage of our pre-season programme with the first of our trials not that far away and our first competition game against the Eels only seven weeks off.â€Â

The training run, due to start at 11.00am, will again be held at the Waiheke Sports Club – home of the Waiheke Rams Rugby League Club – on Causeway Road in Ostend.

The visit doubles as a family event for the entire Vodafone Warriors club with the players, coaching staff, management and their families spending the day together.

One of Waiheke Island’s best-known residents Peter Leitch is again heavily involved in organising the day.

He has arranged return travel for the group from Half Moon Bay to Waiheke Island while Jaguar Tours will transport the “tour party†during their stay. A barbecue will also be laid on for the travelling contingent by the Mad Butcher and members of the Waiheke Kayak Club.

The Waiheke Island visit is a forerunner to the most significant community initiative in the Vodafone Warriors’ history.

For the first time the National Rugby League, in conjunction with the Vodafone Warriors and the Auckland Rugby League, is bringing its Community Carnival concept to New Zealand to promote the 2007 NRL competition and the game in general. The programme is well-established in Australia where the NRL takes officials and players on promotional visits into country areas.

The trailblazing New Zealand version, spanning a whole week from February 13-18, will feature a vast array of activities and events.

Headlining the extravaganza will be NRL chief executive David Gallop, Australian legends, other current NRL players and the Vodafone Warriors.

There’ll be visits to schools, malls and clubs, a season-launching lunch and a golf day before finishing on February 18 with an entertainment-packed open day at Mt Smart Stadium. That day the Vodafone Warriors will play an inter-squad trial match while the public will also have the chance to see the newly-formed Vodafone Cheerleaders for the first time.
