Podcast TWL Ep 3 - with TeetsNRL

I had a great chat with forum regular and friend of TWL TeetsNRL about the weekends games, game models and Warriors best 17 for 2023.
Our wrestling seems to have improved , we can hold guys up longer or lay on them better.
Looked like our halves were shooting up leading line speed in defence.
Our linefeed was great same with kick chase.
But yeah it's all cyclical.

Thanks for the pod guys - but what are the 4 correlates of always a win ? Curious, I googled it and found this - turns out Fonzie is doubly correct - cohesion is one factor : https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeme...e-stats-on-the-nrls-blowouts/?sh=116f0c3034c9

Fonzie, on Vailea, 90% of his Q Cup has been on the left & 3 of his 12 NRL games have been there. Even though he prefers to carry with his right arm it hasn't inhibited his ability to score on that edge. Whether he's more likely to lose the ball in contact on the left or if it means his Winger is less likely to receive the ball remains to be seen. As you say, defensively he'll be a bit more sheltered on the left with less action heading his way

We do look to have improved. Even slight improvements make a massive difference when you add it all up.

The holding one is interesting. Got to be a fly on wall once when I was asked to present the MoM awards for NRL and ISP teams. Cant remember exactly when but Ken Maumalo won the NRL MoM and Ligi Sao the ISP. Same game Peta Hiku wore his shorts backwards for the first half lol. Anyway, got to listen to a breakdown of that particular part of tackling.

The Warriors called it 'catching' under Kearney. Basically you hold them in an upright position. Doesnt matter too much if they are still gaining leg drive. Two key factors are they are contained to prevent an offload and you also prevent them from hitting the deck for quick play the ball. Once they come to a halt you bring them down after 2 or 3 seconds. With 3 players in the tackle you take a second or two each to peel away. Bonus points for getting them on their back facing the wrong way. Another couple of seconds added. Before you know it you've wasted 10-15 seconds giving your defence line time to set.

Sounds simple but this was a 20 minute presentation with Kearney breaking it down frame by frame on the big screen in the Stacey Jones room. Think we were playing the Rabbitohs that week as he was using their technique as the example and saying how good they were at it. An aspect of the game the vast majority of fans have no appreciation of but it is so critical in the modern era...

It also warrants you time in the ruck as the refs acknowledge you as the dominant force and will give you time to get up etc. If you cant wrap up in todays game you are immediately on the back foot and the refs arent willing to give you much benefit in the tackle if you cant prove to them you are more dominant than the attacking player.

Great breakdown , something I really noticed out of the trial.
Also all Vaileas Carries usually resulted in a quick ptb. His first carry was great skipped to the inside of the defender and nearly broke the line.
Momentum is the buzzword they were talking about in the pretrial video. You can see it applied, like Tom ales carry when he 5racked back inside to the rick for more space to run plus a fast pub against defenders not quite back 10.

Great podcast Fonzie and Teets and looking forward to when Brad and Will can come on again.

If you don't mind me asking Fonzie, are you now a full time contributor to the TWL podcast?

Hi mate

I discontinued my own pod about 9 months ago and since then all my podcast content has been published on the TWL platform, and will continue to be. TWLs is Will Evans’ project but he’s more than comfortable for me to create podcast content as I see fit and post it there; I pretty much have my own set of keys.

I don’t generally contribute to the written TWL content or player ratings - that’s all Will.

I also do short guest spots on SENZ radio (doing one tomorrow actually).

But it’s certainly not ‘full time’ - it fits in around work etc. and I certainly don’t get any money from it (or ever expect to) 😂 it’s just a passion project

I do hope to be completely wrong and that the boys manage to snag an top 8 spot.
I am usually an eternal optimist but feel totally the same as you guys, 2024 and onwards I'll be expecting more from the team once this squad gets some games under their belts. Hopefully minimal personnel changes from here on out

Fonzie I just started listening to you on SENZ and had to take a phone call so missed most of it. Please let me know if there is an on demand option to catch the rest.

Great job on the pod guys, I really appreciate the effort. Always enjoy listening in when a new episode drops.

I just want to give these guys, Roo & Hammer, a shout out too as they put together some great stuff as well. Their interviews with former players have been fantastic.

They have just interviewed Webby as well and similarly to the TWL boys it was a great listen and well put together but approached it from a slightly different angle. It doesn’t seem to be uploaded to Spotify yet but is on YouTube for those that have missed it.

Really interesting listening to how he got into coaching and was surprised at all the various connections he had made over the years (w/ Morgan at Hull KR, coaching M Moses and Luke Brooks to an SG Ball title, his relationship with Cleary etc.).

Long story short, big thanks to all of you who put in the time and effort into making great content about the Wahs.
