General Travel Thread

Thanks guys
With all this travel buzz and the family just receiving their ancestry dna & feeling all nostalgic we started organising a trip to Ireland & scotland for next August. Don't drive so it will be by train & bus but jeez some of these places are backward. Might give it a miss & just go shopping in LA
Some nice places on the west coast of Scotland, I don’t really know Ireland. However, I expect both look pretty much like a lot of rural NZ so won’t be anything you haven’t seen before.

Edinburgh is a fabulous city mind

Simples

It’s a holiday and we do the driving

We sit down at home and work out where we want to go to (our route is as below), book flights and accommodation using Booking.com & AirBnb, book the lease car, jump on the plane, arrive at .. pickup car and off we go.

We don’t use a travel agent, all done on the great www.

Depending on what sights etc. there are in the vicinity we stay at each place anywhere from 2 to 7 days e.g. Ulm 2 days, Baden & Freiburg 7 days each as we want to spend time in the Black Forest.

If we are on the move from A to B then we try and find the next stop within no more than 250-300kms away which gets us to B by early afternoon

Route
Frankfurt, Mannheim, Baden-Baden, Freiburg im Breisgau
Ulm, Nuremberg, Wurzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Augsburg, Fussen, Bolzano, Verona
Ravenna, Rimini, Ancona, Pescara
Foggia, Bari, Lecce, Matera
Benevento, Rome
When you get to Rome do the Sistine Chapel tour but book it in advance otherwise you’ll be stood for hours trying to get in. Did this around 2015, we met a tour guide outside and she walked us in past all the queues which looked horrendous. You’ll have to listen to all the bollocks about miracles, but it’s an amazing tour. We paid just under £30 each back then iirc, probably nearer £50 now

Be prepared to do a fair bit of walking btw. Great city to wander around

Oh and watch yourself if you go on the underground or near the main station, some real dodgy characters about.

Lastly, if it’s the height of summer it is stupendously hot.

Thanks Hardyman's Yugo for advice but have done the Sistine and all major sights in Rome in 2011.

For me Rome is the greatest outside museum in the world!!

Haha rookie mistake in hindsight. A guy claimed to work for tourism and offered to take a photo outside the coliseum, I said no a few times and he insisted and wanted no money so gave in in the end thinking no harm, photo was free but demanded money to get my camera back, guy was jacked as fuck do kinda had no option.

I was in Athens and standing in a queue at a fast food place and a nice old lady handed me a rose and smiling nicely told me ‘for my wife’.

When it’s placed in your hands you naturally take it… until she wants the payment! Tried to give it back…. No refunds… left it on a counter and walked out 🤣
