We had very little to go on last time we looked for Syd. Thankfully Ive been able to track down a lot more with Syd being quite active on Facebook.

He is living in Tākaka. Tākaka is a small town situated at the southeastern end of Golden Bay, at the northern end of New Zealand's South Island, located on the lower reaches of the Tākaka River.

From what I can tell from his posts he spends his days fishing, hunting and doing whakairo, the Maori art of carving as well as odd jobs like NIWA research, concreting, building, archeology, to Maori eco tours. As anyone who lives in small towns will know you do whatever work you can to keep the lights on.

Heavily involved with the Maori culture all along that northern coast from Picton to Motueka to Pakawau.

I was just in Takaka last weekend, it'd be a great place to live. It's the Coromandal of the South Island so lots of alternative living, yoga retreats, reggae nights etc. I was in Motueka for work many years ago and Simon Mannering was the pride of the town despite there being no league played in the region.

Well done mt.wellington

I loved watching Syd play.

I was taught Te Reo Maori for a year by his uncle. His Uncle was very proud of him.

Always wondered what happened to Syd.

RIP his uncle as well who passed away a few years ago.

I can tell from his videos that its an amazing place. I actually thought he was in Coromandel or Mt Maunganui. With all the fishing and hunting he does in the sun he certainly lives the good life...

It's a prick of a drive over the Takaka hill to get there so similar to Coro in isolation but better IMO. My cousin used to live there with her husband\guru (twice her age) in a house with mud floors lol. The place used be a haven for German hippies, it's been gentrified since. Worth a visit.

I'll never forget Syd carving up Souths in '95, he ran rings around them like Jarryd Hayne that day, one of our best hookers.

#9 belonged to Syd. After a bad loss Syd ripped it off and threw it into the crowd. The person I bought it off was the one who caught it at Mt Smart lol. #6 was match worn by Gene Ngamu...
