Across 114 years of rugby league there are only 110 players that have been inducted into the NRL hall of fame - the best of the best (excluding recent retirees and current players). Stacey Jones is one of those 110 players, with only 18 other players whose careers overlapped with Stacey also on the list - and that includes the likes of Terry Lamb & Cliff Lyons who were in the twilight of their careers. Clearly according to the experts, Jones was one of the best that played the game.

It’s hard for a player like mannering to compare favourably with more skilled players like Jones (or even Shaun) over the test of time.

Attributes like “always gave it 💯 “ and “made 30 tackles a game” aren’t as memorable as that try against the roosters or the banana kicks to vagana. So it is only a matter of time before mannering slips to a top 5 warriors player, to top 10, to top 20.

Memories favour players that bring the spice, unfortunately.

I’m sure there were great Mannering-type players in Pele’s, Maradonna’s and Messi’s teams

Would I have fallen in love with watching the warriors due to a player like mannering? Probably not. It took Jones to do that. But would I have kept supporting the club if we didn’t have mannering? It would certainly have been a difficult stint being a warriors supporter without him

Also massive shout out to Defence for doing this thread.

I have mentioned in these forums that I love the place since we have a spot to share our pain as Warriors fans and the vast majority of members are outstanding.

Even when disagreeing the majority is incredibly respectful.

But it's nice remembering why we love this team and revisiting our favourite players together.

So thanks Defence . You're the real off-season MVP.

Can’t go past Stacey, the original Warriors superstar. Our odds of winning without Stacey dropped dramatically, moreso than any other player I could think of. Real shame we couldn’t have won the big dance in 02/03 which sadly remains our best chance

No offence to the guys he did have, but imagine if Stacey had the kind of long term half’s partner some of his contemporaries did.

If he had a Daley, a Walters, a Kenny to come up with plays/points and take pressure off him he would’ve been even better.

Ngamu looked good for stints and Hohaias debut year gave me a bit of hope but yeah other than those 2 and maybe Simon for a year or so it was a bit of a revolving door

Thanks bro- glad u enjoyed it- kept me entertained anyway and I would have to thank tajhay and mt.wellington - I didn’t really think this through beforehand and as I’m traveling In a different time zone- I had to lean on them a lot behind the scenes and the last thing they probably needed at this time of year was more work 😂

Either of the Paul brothers would’ve been great.
I liked motu Tony too and thought he could’ve been a good foil being a physical/ running 5/8. Only problem being neither of them really had a long kicking game.
Maybe that’s why his most successful partnership was with John Simon (58% winning record).

Johnson went through much the same thing- I’d hazard a guess he’s played with even more different halves than Stacey, with his most successful partnership being with Blake green (which is also the club’s most successful pairing with a 62.5% winning record).

That’s the warriors though isn’t it- feels like we’ve been in a constant state of change for 30 years.

With respect to Mannering, it’s comfortably Jones.

If Stacey doesn’t resign for the Warriors in 2001 after the club goes broke there’s no minor premiership, no grand final or three consecutive finals appearances.

We may not even have a Warriors team to support in the most dire timeline. He was the rock that built the club in the NRL era and our first home grown superstar.

The last man to be evicted and your runner up- one of the toughest, most consistent players to ever take the field- the legendary Simon Alexander Mannering

Well he came in as a hot favorite and in the end could not be denied.
There’s really not much I can say about the little general that hasn’t already been said in the last few pages.
When Stacey jones was on the field the boss was in the office.
Your greatest ever warrior- the incomparable Stacey William Jones ONZM.
