Steve Rapira 2012 2

Just flicking onto the Cows/Tits game, great to see Steve Rapira making his debut. I think he's going to be a gun player. He's probably the only player we lost last year that I have any concerns about. Hopefully he comes back after his stint there to reunite with Sammy.

I agree with you Iafeta, Steve Rapira looked for all money like a quality forward last season, would have liked to see us keep him.

By the by, anyone know whats happened to Russell Packers brother?

Paora Packer is still a year or two away from making the first grade side, I believe.

How is the younger Rapira looking?

Is Paora even playing still? He's the older brother and I've seen him recently, he looks rather... small, compared to his little/big brother.

Oh - I thought it was the other way around. I have no idea, then. (Surprise, surprise!) :D

I'm pretty sure Russell was the older one and we signed both. Paora was 16 when we signed him wasn't he?

The Vodafone Warriors have beaten several rival NRL clubs to sign one of New Zealand rugby league's most exciting prospects Russell Packer and his older brother Paora.

Vodafone Warriors welfare and development manager Tony Iro said securing the Foxton-born and bred teenagers was hugely significant.

"There was enormous interest in the boys from clubs in Australia, especially Russell who is highly rated by everyone who has seen him," he said.

"Our aim is to keep as many of New Zealand's best young prospects at the club as we can.

"This reinforces our commitment to developing our own players and it also shows we are able to offer local players a great pathway to first-grade football."

Russell Packer (16), a New Zealand Under-16 representative last year, is a 188cm 112kg prop, and Paora (18) is a 187cm 95kg second rower. They both play for Manawatu's Central Falcons in the Bartercard Cup, Paora making his debut in 2005 and Russell this year.

In fact, Falcons coach David Lomax had the younger brother lined up for his first Bartercard Cup appearance last year when he was still only 15, only for the New Zealand Rugby League to rule he was too young.

"The fact they've both signed for the Vodafone Warriors is a first for rugby league in Manawatu and for the Central Falcons," said Lomax.

"This shows there's a chance in this country for players from our area to join an NRL club. It's a brilliant opportunity for them and a big boost for us."

Lomax said he had few qualms about exposing Russell Packer in the Bartercard Cup despite his youthful age.

"He's young but he is good enough and he's big enough. He's also smart with it. He's head boy at Manawatu College and he's an academic," he said.

"They're really good boys."

Iro echoed Lomax's sentiments.

"It's exciting to be able to bring players like this to the club," said Iro.

"We want to encourage players from areas like Manawatu to come through the system to earn the chance to develop into first-grade footballers."

Both brothers began their rugby league careers with the Levin Lions but also have a background in rugby union. They played in age-group representative union teams when they were younger.

Russell had been alternating between both codes but switched to league full-time last year when he was forced by his school to make a decision between the two.

You dare to question me? LOL.

I did some research and Paroa has actually been playing in the Queensland cup, right in my backyard. He obviously hasn't done too much though because I haven't heard a thing about him and his time with the Redcliffe dolphins.

Rusty was head boy when he was only 16?

Yep from what I was hearing when I visited my past home (Wellington), recently.

Is that Russell's not just all Brawn. but has Brains as well. In fact he's spending time when not at the Warriors, doing a University course.

They also reckon that he's going to be a player of the Future. In the sense that he is still young & developing, so will only get more Brawnier

Plausible, if he was born in the right time of the year, that would mean he was just put up a year.

I'm going to be turning 18 this year and finishing 7th form, don't know how that could happen.

I finished school at 17 being one of those weird kids put up a year. Find it hard to believe someone finishing at 16, most people seem to be 18 with a minority at 17 but haven't heard of 16...

The Warriors have made a audacious bid to lure Steve Rapira back home to the club.

They have put a healthy offer on the table for him and are close to agreeing to terms.

The article also mentions that we are keen to extend Luck beyond this season too.

Good. With his bro here, I think we can get him for unders.

Not that keen on signing Luck though.. I think he is awesome, but our money can be a bit better spent elsewhere.
