A thread for all general discussion about the St George-Illawarra Dragons that doesn't fit into existing threads such as the NRL Salary Cap, Naughty Chair, Warriors team lists, game day and post match threads etc.

This can include past or present news and views, match tactics, recruitment strategy etc...

We hear about the issues with players breaking protocol and the sacrifices our guys have made.

Bennett broke the rules and he was on the working committe so should of known better.

Mcgregor has been getting battered for his coaching. Criticism is fair looking at the results.

But look at the sacrifice he has had to make for his team staying in the NRL bubble. His father who is in hospital he hasn't seen for 3 months.

Looks like we dodged a bullet with Griffin!

always amazed that people in high profile or wanting high profile positions dont just keep these beliefs, if he does believe them and not just click like on anything going, keep these beliefs private. It seems we have become a culture that seems to want to express every random thought publicly. I bet you wouldnt see him standing in front of a camera saying any of this.

Problem is, we live in a culture where we are expected to conform to so called mainstream opinion as if opinion itself were a monolith. Even worse, far too many people (including people on this forum) are trained either subconsciously or otherwise to shout down any differing opinion in increasingly abusive ways. Militant attitudes based on a few headlines and a 5 minute news segment. Now you're an expert, now you can tell others to go F themselves etc. God help us.

This has always been true though. Mainstream opinion has always marginalised people that are different. Religion, social mores all seek to create a them and us differentiation, and often they want to enforce compliance as well. Mainstream opinion can change however if your arguments are good enough. extreme examples look at south africa, where the whites eventually gave up their power in the face of overwhelming world opinion as an example of the former. Look at NZ views on abortion as an example of the later.
The only thing we can do as members of a forum is work to moderate the anti statements and ensure that they stay as arguments, expressing opinion or fact about the subject, but do not degenerate into pissing matches or personal attacks.
Personally i have a habit of blocking trolls and calling people when they move away from doing these things. I especially hate when people tell me or others what they have to do instead of create arguments to debate the point and call them up on it really quickly.

did anyone pick up on the desire for the Drags to bring Folau back from europe? i read the article on the 2nd of feb. On the 3rd of feb there was a follow up article saying they had dumped the idea because of "intense backlash from NRL fans"

perfect example of a good outcome from media information informing the stake holders, in this case, the fans of the game - to find out what they wanted. Also i dont care what media gags they put in there, he has already proven unreliable with contracts and therefore a massive risk in a game that wants inclusion not exclusion.

I know its been commented on in other threads but the speculation of the Dragons potentially taking on Jamayne Taunoa Brown I'm a bit mixed on.

Taunoa is out of favour here and it would help getting some game time. I know the plan is a short term loan and he will resign here. Not sure if that is how our loans worked last year or not to work with the salary cap. It does put him at risk of leaving. This year he hasn't been great, especially on his hit up stats. I still think there is something there if you look at last years performances.

Where I a more against it is around the punishment on the Dragons. I know its because they would be short of middle forwards and need to juggle the suspensions across multiple games so they can field a side.

If they kept Vaughan he would of been suspended and they would of still been short of middle forwards available for selection. They would of had to work around it. Now they have sacked him they have a roster spot and can sign another to alleviate their situation.

if you look in the recruitment thread i just posted about our top 30 we have 31 we have to reduce this by August so letting go this year to join Dragons then getting him back next year could be a smart move

It does seem to defeat the purpose of Vaughan's original suspension if they're allowed to just borrow a replacement from outside their squad, what a farce.

The purpose was to sanction Vaughn, from everything that has come out the Dragons acted properly. It was Vaughn who was the ringleader and went against specific instructions, along with the others. The scale of disruption for a club which has acted legally means I have no issue with the loan.
