General Sir Owner

Nice one Mr Glenn. You can't buy that sort of honour... hey... wait a minute...
Yeah I didnt want to say it before but all this 'philanthropy' was to do just that. Another tick off Glenns bucket list I assume.

PS If you dont know what 'philanthropy' means its when the rich give money to charities or causes. The rest of us mortals just 'donate'...

My inner cynic agrees, Mt Wellington. Probably my outer cynic too.

But despite the New Year Honours list meaning as much to me as Lindsay Lohan's minge I won't lose sleep over it. I'm perfectly happy for OG to philansturbate all over the place if he wants.

Get a grip guys, he could be sitting on a pile and doing nothing to help others with it, I think this is more the point!!

And good on him for that, Vancent. I'm not entirely sure what else a 72 year old multi-millionaire that already has whatever he personally wants would do with it besides spend it where it's seen, though. I suppose he could be seated atop his money mountain, naked save a beard and a chain of the Mad Butcher's sausages hanging from his, attempting to find Nirvana whilst dispensing advice to wary seekers of financial wisdom from Auckland University. But he's not.

After years of breaking eggs to make his omelette his hard earned is being put to good use among the disadvantaged - victims of child abuse, the poor and underprivileged of Otara, the Warriors... the list goes on.

Kudos, Owen... kudos. By all means, continue as you see fit.

The Warriors are the most needy of that list.

I tend to slightly disagree with your definition. While your definition is not technically wrong philanthropy is more accurately the "active" promotion of human welfare as opposed to donation which can be (but is not always) a very passive way to help. A Philanthropist will usually seek ways of using their money to assist the specific needs/needy they support, while a donation is usually given to another to have general use of in support of the cause. Philanthropists tend to use their money to help the charities and causes rather than just giving it.

I commend Owen. He could easily sit on his money or just passively throw it at causes he enjoys, but he is very hands on and creates ways to help. He also doesn't appear to me to be doing it for media attention or to get himself into heaven. He genuinely seems to care. I am not neccessarily the most positive person, but when someone puts their time and money into helping good causes and needy people, I can't turn it into a negative thing.
