General Rugby League Commentators Thread

Matty Johns has made his name acting like a fool post retirement. But that session on NRL 360 where he was concentrating on the halves was pretty good viewing.

When he asked for a belt and Paul Kent pulled out a tape measure smiling I knew you'd ask for this does make me wonder if he's a one trick pony.

The NRL has so much drama that we barely get to talk about the actual football.
I thought at the start of that segment that Johns looked like he was making shit up and the other thing is he often looks high.

Kent was trying to get him to go into specifics and he went on some mad ramble about driving to Penrith.

Put it this way, I dont think I would learn a lot from someone like him, in other words while he might have been a really good player, he comes across as a piss poor teacher.

He did pull it all together quite well with the tape.

That was an excellent segment I really enjoyed it.

A real good breakdown of the nuts and bolts of halves play and im glad he highlighted how good the Shaun Johnson/Green combo has been and how they complement each other.

I can see why a lot of clubs send their young halves his way. Good shit.

Hes one of the most sought after coaches for halves, i've heard so many top names that have been sent to him. If Bellamy is sending his halves to him, then you can gaurantee he knows what hes talking about.

As a non-league playing, non-league coaching, don't-rewatch-league-matches kinda guy, Matty Johns' segment was really interesting. That's not to say I''m going to be rewinding teams' attacking moves to see if they follow the "Break down one edge, switch the attack to the other edge asap" thing, but it was interesting to hear.

I have wondered sometimes if the art of being a great player in whatever sport is to firstly identify your strengths and weaknesses early so you don't waste time trying to be like, say, Shaun Johnson and run the ball when that's not your strength. But you also also spend enough time on thinking "how do I avoid exposing my weakness?" As an example, it's a weakness of Kata that he doesn't pass. Does he even have much of a dummy? I don't mind that he backs himself, it's that it's A: So obvious he backs himself and B: He doesn't even every so often flick a pass to someone else...

I think he likes to keep some of his methods close to his chest and not give away all of his pupils' secrets.

I like that he refuses to take money for teaching them and the players stay at his house haha.

Wonder how his sons will progress in the next few years.

That' is cool, the part about not being paid.

Sterlo strikes me as someone who would have made a good teacher too.

I think people assume that the best players make the best coaches, but it rarely works that way.

People who are born with a natural gift can sometimes find it very difficult to explain how they do things or why things work.

Same thing applies in commentary, some of the best never went near playing first grade.

hadnt seen this thread about commentators before, so thought i would put my 2 cents in

everytime halligan commentates the sound on my t.v goes off, it happens so often now my telly does it by itself LOL

i always enjoyed Graham Hughes commentating and big Daryl Eastlake.

love listing to the big booming voice of David Morrow on the radio too

These guys might be worth listening to on the radio during the season. A bit different than the normal stuff we get.

I see Elliot Smith is doing the radio sport commentary for the home games. He is not a bad commentator but his sport is rugby. Not like Allen McLaughlin who was a league man through and through.

Unfortunately both Sky TV with Glenn Larmer and now Radio Sport with Elliot Smith are letting their viewers and listeners down with providing commentators who don't really know much about our game. I struggle to listen Glen Larmer and now watch the replay of the home games with the sound off.

Yes Daryl Halligan can be a bit to much sometimes but at least he played the game ;)

Allen McLaughlan was a first class commentator and before him, Des White was also. That was radio that bought the game and atmosphere to where ever you were listening. Larmer, Bluey, Halligan etc would have you reaching for the off button.

Sounds good, though I already have trouble getting fanPass to be truly "live" at times, so I imagine it would get out of synch pretty fast if I had the iHeartRadio app going as well.

Bring back Tony Palmer!
Why not? That guy could make tiddly winks exciting, and he knew the game as well.:)
Hard to believe that we had Vossy for a season.
SkyTv is too tight and disrespectful to the fans.

They bled for the game those two. Mac should never have been allowed to retire IMO. Dalai Larmer has his heart in the right place and does a difficult job to the best of his ability.
