Watched the replay with a bit more of a level head and looking at the controversial calls with the emotion taken out.
Tedesco professional foul in the first 10 mins was borderline, being as early as it was in the game and the speed Addin Fonua-Blake played it probably saved him- 50/50 we didn’t get
Dont think you could have awarded the Arthars try, strip wasn’t clear over Walsh losing it, would have been happy if it was awarded but pissed if it was awarded against us.
The rest of the reffing was fine except for a 5 min period around the 20-15 mins to go period.
The Addin Fonua-Blake strip call was plain wrong and shifted momentum away from us, there was then a knock on call on the last against Dallin Watene-Zelezniak that went back(but have seen similar called tbf)
The Pompey foot in the ptb was unlucky but technically correct but that was the winning of the games sadly.
Once the Roosters kicked 8 ahead our attack dried up and we weren’t good enough to come back- them getting to 8 was a little unlucky but their last no try was probably a 50/50 that went our way

This is 100% how I saw it live - really only the Addin Fonua-Blake strip that was a howler.

Addin Fonua-Blake was trying to play the ball too quick on the Tedesco foul. He didn't really make a second effort or try to spoil play. We didn't even have a dummy half.

The Arthars try went up no try, could of gone either way, but bunker sided with the ref. The only issue here is that they don't do that every week.

They generally call it a handling error rather than a knock on these days in league - more often than not if you fumble the ball it is going to be called. Like it or lump it, that it is how it is and can cause some inequality at times.

Pompey's foot was 100% right.

The pain is probably more that none of these calls went our way, although there were a couple of incidents I though we got a bit lucky on too. We also got quite a few relieving penalties when we just could not make metres out of our half.

Walker's try was a touch soft, but he is really strong and wriggly for such a small fella. He put a good spin in on Shaun Johnson (who did look old today). He'll embarrass defenders a lot during his career.

We were outmuscled, and hurried by a team with quick line speed. But the good news is we weren't too far off.

A decision that had less impact on the game that I still found frustrating was the Arthars I think it was got done for holding down Tedesco.

Tedesco was down but got up pretty much straight away which is one of his strengths but it was like he kept running. If Arthars did let go Tedesco would of played the ball 3-4 metres up field instead of where he was tackled.

I noticed this too. I thought he took like 5 steps off the mark, then we got penalized for not letting him play the ball!! He should have been called back to play it where the ref called held.

But, the whole NRL needs a reset. The new rules have taken the strategy and skill out of the game. It’s all momentum chosen by the officials. Like what is the point of having a seven tackle set, when the ref can keep calling 6 again. V’landys is dumb and needs to go!

Yea im a bit perplexed at the outcry all of a sudden. Non of the calls actually cost us the game. There was no guarantee we score after AFBs missed call, in reality we didn't look like scoring all game after the first try. I've seen games far worse were we've been dudded by refs but for some reason this one really rubbed people the the wrong way.

Game of two half's for me and we had our chances first half to go up by a decent margin but we couldn't capitalise. Two plays in particular come to mind - pompey failing to put his winger way and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak failing to take on his winger with a clear line.

On field reff was great, bunker made some rough calls but nothing you don't see every week.

Better team still won for me. Idk maybe im just becoming old but I dont get all this anger at the refs. We weren't good enough to win it.

I have had this theoretical conversation in private before with one of my forum friends on this site but will share now in the thread that I believe in reductionism

In some academic cases circumstances are so complex that you can’t blame an outcome on on one reason and you always have to concur the outcome was due to multiple reasons.

In train accidents and workplace accidents multi factor reasons are always used as they don’t pin a tragedy on one person or one factor.
This is the correct approach as there probably were 5 or 6 reasons and real life accidents are complex.

In issues not involving life and death and where a learnings from a defeat are imperative to future long term success then hanging one person out to dry for a loss or failed project creates better actionability in the build up to the next project or next game the team plays.

It is easier and manageable to focus on fixing one or two things after a loss rather than ten learning points.

My blaming the entire loss on Walsh’s kick off is in keeping with my boarder views as a sports arm chair analyst and a analyst in the business world.

In my view and in Shaun Johnson’s that kick was the turning point because I was looking for a turning point

If I had to have a second reason would blame Aaron pene and bunty for both not running over 100 metres in a game where we had bad go forward in the middle

If you don’t believe or agree with my reductionism theory of if it doesn’t hold them Walsh deserved an 8 as overall he was good if you can get past his error

Your theory does not take into account all relevant factors. Like in rel life, say an air accident can be analysed down to blame. What about terrorism? The footage of the terrorists going through the boarding process on 9/11, they tried tin that poor guy, but he did his job right as per his job description.

There are two types of mistakes on the field, forced and unforced, Walsh's kick was an unforced error, it is not part of a pattern of such mistakes, nor do I expect it is the start of a pattern. Shit happens, move on.

Forced erors wer caused by the Roosters linespeed, because of injuries the Warriors were short of go forward and so they were smothered. The worst mistake I saw was Dallin Watene-Zelezniak putting that kick down, relatively standard for a player like him, but pressure caused a mistake.

Same as for Bunty and Pene, they didn't have much front foot ball and they were smothered, they did not play badly, the Roosters played well.

I think it was a good performance for a team missing some of their best forwards. Or are you saying Ben Murdoch-Masila, Harris, Lodge and Jazz wouldn't have helped?

In saying that, the amount of roosters supporters that have been openly critical towards the reffing for their team has been something you don’t see from the average game with a reffing mistake here and there.

Wow! Ive seen some bad takes on this site but this is right up there. There is just so much to unpack here…but the most ridiculous ones need mention.

- Reece gets a 1 because of 1 error. Yet his individual brilliance in the second half kept us in the game.

- Kodi a 7 coz he didnt make an error 😂

- Dallin Watene-Zelezniak drops a ball that leads to a try but scores 1 off Reeces brilliance so he gets a 7.

- Chanel Harris-Tavita sets up the Kosi try perfectly and was huge on defence (the Crichton stop was something else) but you rate him a 3.

- And then the kicker…brings up Kane ‘bloody’ Evans like he would have made a single bit of difference!!! In the wise words of Gus “NO NO NO!!!
Players grades with comments (in case Tajhay is wondering why I didn't grade in the grading app)

1 Reece Walsh - 1 out of ten. Needs to take accountability for this loss. What was he thinking before the infamous second half kick off? I am going to drill this 1 metre inside the dead ball line to give us a great start to the second half? Why? How about a nice safe kick. He did another one later that nearly went over the side line on the full. Maybe Shaun Johnson to kick off from now on or Chanel Harris-Tavita.
2) Ed Kosi 8 out of 10. Great game
3) Pompey 10 out of 10. Best centre on the field for either team
4) Arthars 2 out ten. Stupid penalty at a critical point in the game.
5) Dallin Watene-Zelezniak - dropped the pill on the game winning try. Warmed into the match as it went on. Good try. That took some finishing. 7 out of 10.
6) Chanel Harris-Tavita - we needed a 40 20 down the stretch and he didn't step up and try. Lack of assertion means a 3 out ten. Good tackling.
7) Shaun - 4 out of ten. A turning point of the match was when he gave away a 7 tackle set in the first half with a grubber kick. He needs to weight those inch perfec.t They scored off the 7 tackle set if I recall correctly. He did not get us enough repeat sets in general. He needs to be better. He should be aiming to be the best player on the field each game. Not good enough.
8) Addin Fonua-Blake - 149 metres. 8 out of 10.
9 Egan - 7 out of ten. Stupid penalty
10) Pene - Ran for only 93 metres. We needed 150 from him tonight given how light on props we were. He ran it up like a powder puff and looked afraid of contact. I would be too but he is an NRL prop. Get into it son. He is yet to run for 100 metres this season. Should have Kept Kane Evans instead like I said all along. 1 out of ten for Pene. He didn't play badly but he needed to have the game of his life tonight instead he put in a paycheque performance and is turning into a pay cheque player.
11) Aitken 9 out of 10. Does a lot of unseen work.
12) Sironen. In tackling you talk about hard shoulders that win the collision. He had a weak shoulder tonight that let them make the advantage line each time. 4 out ten. At least no play of the ball errors.
13) Curran. Meh 5 out of ten'

14) Kodi No mistakes. 7 out of ten
15) Bunty. Only 53 metres. One of his worst outings. Didn't put his hand up enough. 2 out of ten.
16) Katoa - started off with a hard shoulder and real impact. Then he got gassed after only 3 to 4 minutes on the field. Brown's patience with him must be tested.
17 Otokulu - Good ball security. 4 out of ten. No mistakes.
That kids is why you should avoid drugs

One thing I’ll take from the loss is we’re improving. Roosters are a top 4 side that know how to win. Compare this performance to the round 1 loss to the Dragons.
Or the win (or was it?) against the Tigers. Worst 80 minutes I’ve ever watched.

Looking at the stats above…

Roosters had more ball in the second half, our play the ball in the second slowed down a lot, our running metres dried up, we gave away too many penalties and made more errors.

add in a dubious bunker decision and we have a loss.

I rate his player rating a 3 out of 10. Was pretty shit imo. For example walshs rating is incredibly harsh. He had the bad kick off error but what else did he do to deserve 1?
Walsh is often out of position on defence, is not safe under the high ball, has stopped sniffing rounds the props, he makes some miracle plays now and then and is a great goal kicker. He a made a mistake that led to the roosters dominating us in the first ten minutes of the 2nd half which is where we lost the game. If you are rating him on his impact on the game wrighty is possibly a bit harsh but not that far off in my opinion.

Boats n Hoes

Boats n Hoes

In my view and in Shaun Johnson’s that kick was the turning point because I was looking for a turning point
Dont think Shaun singled that out as a turning point but was rightly pointing out we made too many errors that 2nd half which started right from the kick off. Dont think he implied that kick was the reason for all errors after that at all.

You hear from coaches every week "we need to learn to defend our errors".....after Reece's kick out on the full 40 seconds later Egan gives away that unnecessary penalty in front of the sticks giving the chooks 2 points, then a minute later Curran gives away another one getting us on the back foot.

Now you could play the "if Reece didnt do what he did we wouldnt be in that position for Egan to give away that penalty" but that's League and going to happen every game and the good teams deal with it by defending their error.....we compounded it by making more errors, and thats the part we need to get better at.

I dont think there was actually one turning point (very rarely is) think across the board the Roosters generally just dominated the ruck - 4 of their starting forwards ran 100m only 2 of ours, they made more post contact metres than ours, had a faster play the ball speed than ours, had intensity in line speed on D greater than us that they kept up the whole game which pretty much stifled our attack.

The fact that despite this we we're still up to our eye balls in this game we can take heart from. 50/50 and dud calls not going our way is out of control, our own errors are, working on them and the areas mentioned above is how we get better.

Dunedin warrior

It was a great first half from us, we were sharp and played with some ambition. Looks like they are prepared to move the ball around and it’s slowly getting more fluent.

Roosters slowly ground over the top of us in the 2nd half, although we didn’t make it easy for them. I think Brown got it wrong with his bench with Otakolo and Kodi both there. Another big forward probably would have been a better option.

Overall I liked what I saw, we are a bit undersized and no real game breakers on our edges and outsides but they are having a good go in the last three games and there are signs of improvement on both sides of the ball.

Top 8 beckons if we can keep improving.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, I am happy to the club perseveres with Brown for the time being.

We’ve jagged a few ugly wins, we’ve been improving, and our recruitment looks promising. On top of that, the team culture looks pretty good

Who are the club going to target to replace Lodge next season if he doesn’t resign. No doubt our current rotation works when he plays but seems to lose something when he dosent.
Nelson Asofa Solomona can be approached from November, bearing in mind his vaccination stance would he be worth an offer? Sounding like Barnett for next year, but what position?

The way Covid evolves I am no longer against signing unvaccinated twits like NAS.

It seems with the virus we are headed towards a strain that has full vaccine escape anyway.

Ergo why worry about it. Also NZ is heading rappidly to a model in line with the rest of the world where vaccine status will no longer be part of social discourse, it will be a private decision, where media have no interest, as all personal health care factors should be.

Sign him if you can get him and ignore the guys bollocks.
