I ask a different question tonight. "How many ways do I not love the decision to play Egan at 6 let me count the ways".

1) If he played halves in juniors and someone tapped him on the shoulder and said "You don't have the x factor to be an NRL half, why not try hooker?" Then perhaps that is signal enough that a leopard doesn't change his spots. If he wasn't elite then he won't be elite now.

2) Is he the best hope we have of winning the game against the Rabbitohs and causing an upset. No. Both Volkman and Asi are competent halves and are both better than Egan is a half. If we want to maximise our chances of winning this match Asi or Volkman should be playing. If anyone thinks what Egan showed last week is better than Asi and Volkman then this forum must have a seriously low opinion of those two prospect players. People must think they are really poor players and they aren't. Especially since Shaun Johnson overcalls them most of the game anyway.

3) Is playing Egan at 6 just to tackle bot all night in some type of money ball selection. Why not Sironen then who also looked ok at 6 when he filled in there and is a better tackler than Egan and also it would mean Egan could play Hooker without weakening us at hooker by him not being there.

4) In the book Robinson Crusoe the main protagonist is captured by pirates and spends the evening tied up next to them while they have a bonfire. At midnight after eating a roast boar they kick the boar into the fire to watch it burn even though there was plenty of meat left for the next three days of cold cuts. The author and protagonist in a vivid line that made the book famous said "Never in my life had I seen a group of men with such wanton disregard for the needs of the morrow".
By playing Egan ahead of developing Volkman in these last 6 games we are giving up a golden opportunity to give Volkman experience. I am not a professional sportsman but have been told a big part of playing NRL or international cricket is familiarity with playing in front of a massive crowd and not getting nervous from it. Volkman would have learned the pace of an NRl game and gotten used to playing in front of a massive crowd and being on TV. He would have learned composure.

5) What happens if Egan puts in a half way decent performance at half on the weekend. Like a 7 or 7.5 or even an 8? In the first instance it means he will play half for the rest of this season. And most likely it means it will be considered to make him our 6 for next season and make a permanent switch. What the actual fuck!!! It was bad enough converting Aitken from centre to a mediocre second rower and now we are going to fuck with Egan by changing him from being one of the top ten hookers in the NRL to being a mediocre run of the mill half ? Who does that decision benefit? Egan? The fans? Not our salary cap that's for sure as we would have to go out there and spend $400 to $500K on a replacement hooker to find someone as good as Egan.

6) If Egan does put in a 7 out of ten performance and either start game one next season then why in fucks name did we acquire Te Maire Martin to play 6? We also are bringing over Metcalf next year who can play 6. Instead of having a two conumdrum between Metcalf and Egan we are going to make it harder for ourselves and make ourselves pick between Egan Te Maire Martin and Metcalf

7) If Egan does put in a 7 out of performance and plays well at stand off the rest of the season then next season we are full of dudes who we don't know where to play. Is Dylan Walker a 14 or a centre. Is Metcalf a full back or a standoff. Is Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad a centre or a fullback. Is Niukore a centre a second rower a prop or a lock. Is Barnett a prop or a lock or a second rower. Is Tohu harris going to play prop or second row. And now while wrestling with those multiple of questions instead of following the KISS principle we are going to be asking ourselves next year whether Egan should play hooker or stand off each week. We will be overwhelmed with choices.

8) A comeback to all of this is what if Egan is a revelation at standoff this weekend. Maybe it is worth taking a gander at him for one game.
We already had a gander at him last game. Did he look like Wally Lewis? No. Did he look like Jack Wighton. No. Did he look like Dylan Brown? No.
Are we actually doing this because we want to see if we have an elite half on our hands here in Egan so want to give him a run to have a look just in case we have a future Daly M stand off on our hands. Because if Yes to the above. Then ok it makes sense to play him at half this weekend as he would be clearly better than Te Maire Martin next year. And clearly better a half than Metcalf next year. So there would be no selection dramas and it would be worth giving up his services as a top ten hooker to get a half as good as Munster.
But based on what I saw he did not look like an NRL standard half last week.
He will not be the revelation of a Munster or a Wally lewis this weekend. Why on earth do the coaching staff think he might be based on what he put out last week.

Great post but using the KISS principle, our aim is to discover if Lussick is the goods and give him game time. He looks effective and could be our 14 next year to partner Egan. Throw him in the deep end and see if he gets found out.

I suspect it’s more about testing Lussick than Egan. Egan to 6 is just a short term use for him that provides experienced in the halves.

Testing Lussick is possibly a more important question mark for next year than trialing a youngster at 6 who won’t play there anyway next year with Te Maire Martin. Asi is not long term and they might feel Volkman is better suited to learning the 7 in reserves rather than playing 6?

I’ve seen plenty on a panthers forum who would love Egan back with how he’s progressed. They lose Koriasau next year and Kenny hasn’t come on anywhere near Egan, though Egan has had the benefit of playing first grade week in week out whereas Kenny has played second fiddle to Koriasau. Was happy to see in that article that Stacey sees Egan as an out and out hooker so he will definitely be returning to hooker. Good option seeing what he can do if we were to become depleted by injury in the halves in the future, people were saying coming into this season that we had too many halves but with Taylor being retired and Nikorima leaving, we ended up bringing in Asi as that’s how much things can change. Playing five eighth hopefully sees him doing some kicking and becoming a 5th tackle kick option from dummy half, I think he had that in his game in his time early with us.

Wrighty this is pretty much my view on the situation mate. Asi has already proven he cannot defend in first grade. He's a great QCup player, and a very average first grade player, that's probably his ceiling and I don't see us resigning him. What Egan put up last weekend was marginally overshadowed by Asi's debut for us, and far better than anything he's produced since.

As much as we need the young guns to get experience, for the club, it's sponsors, and it's fans, avoiding the spoon is a very good decision to make.

I know the Titans are somehow worse than us this year, but we still need a few more good performances to build towards next year.

Volkman's job is going to be taking over from Shaun Johnson - as much as I've loved what I've seen of him so far, if he's in the team and playing at 6, Shaun will overcall him, and comparing that to having the experience of leading a team of men in QCup as the primary playmaker is, well, I think it's far more valuable at this stage of his development.

His time will come, and the occasional game in first grade will be good for him. Throwing him in against a red hot Souths side is probably not such a great idea right now. That and it looks like he's injured/ill since isn't name for Cup either right now.

In terms of the hooking situation - we've got Lussick who has looked good recently, and getting Otukolo some more game time isn't a bad thing. We're effectively giving one youngster some more game time in exchange for another.

I don't think it's quite as doom and gloom as you've made it out - appreciate and understand your points, I just disagree in this case.

I find his picks unusually similar and experimental. Pene over curran workhorse? Which would free up a edge space for Tohu Harris or even Katoa seems odd.

Halves again is odd. Asi fills in well but then when we need a halve we opt for our hooker.

In his absence, Jones chose to go with Wayde Egan at five-eighth for Saturday’s game against the Rabbitohs. Preferring the specialist hooker to the club’s young halves Daejarn Asi and Ronald Volkman.

“I know we’ve got other options there with Daejarn Asi, who played a couple of weeks ago,” Jones said.

“But there are parts of his game that he needs to get sorted more, based around defence.

“It was more a case of Wayde did a really good job and I also thought Freddy Lussick did a pretty good job, he was very brave in the middle with his defence.

“We then get an opportunity to give Taniela (Otukolo) an opportunity to come on the bench.”

Seems like he doesn't like Asi defence which is fair and wanting to give the young hookers a go. Not sure about some of his other selections but at least there is some logic around his half and hooker selection.

Wrighty, thanks for giving me the opportunity to read the longest post on this site I have ever read. But do I agree with what you have said, no. I actually do like the idea of Egan playing in the 6 jersey this weekend as I thought he looked good last weekend and I also felt that Johnson seemed to play much better also. Egan has a maturity and simplicity about his game which might rub off on the players a little wider of the ruck and which also IMO might improve the decision making out wide also. He also runs direct similarly to a James Maloney which could be a good thing for straightening up the attack! However, even if he plays well it doesn't mean he is going to play 6 next season. It might just give the coaches something to think about which is a good thing. Win or Lose this weekend I am actually more interested in seeing which players stand up and play well and Egan at 6 is one of these I will be looking at. I also hope Kosi plays well also. Anyway I am sorry to disagree with my wooden spoon contender

It's a shame Jazz isn't playing this weekend. Upset Mitchell and he plays better. Upset him some more and he becomes a virus that infects his team. I'm not sure who would do that now but I think it's our best chance.

It was interesting that when Payten was here he said he was one of the very few that understood the game well and knew what option to take at the right time. Last week he also seemed to be able to up the tempo on that left hand side which made us look more dangerous

Yeah he has all the makings. His decisions at crucial times needs refining then I'd put him up there with Mahoney, and Starling.

I have seen him too often hot on attack jump out and do a shit kick into traffic or pass to a runner in heavy heavy traffic resulting in tunr overs.

Not saying he shouldnt make thos plays but become more adept at getting them to come off.

Love Egan though hes a battler with effort. The kind you want to have when youre building a team. Cos even though the results arent coming he keeps trying.
