Back in the day, in the North of England, there would have been a settling and NAS would not have survived another 5 minutes on the field, guaranteed. Probably would not have even been a brawl. He would have gone into a scrum and some out with his nose splattered all over his face. Read Mark Graham's biography.
Which is why I said along we should have kept Kane Evans as our enforcer. Pene replaced him and was nowhere near as good as Evans at making metres.
The game needs Biff - I mean we took the high road to the NAS shot and nothing paid off for us and we lost anyway. We should be aiming to get an enforcer and get into about 2-3 fights per year. We should have signed Mad Jack as a potential enforcer as well. Mad Jack doesn't care about trips to the judiciary and getting suspended.

You don't have to convince m the game has gone soft.

IMO what happened to Egan was disgraceful, and the fact that the bunker didn't see what I could from Bay 39 is even more disgraceful. I don't know what the club can do about it.

if Kane Evans came in and dropped NAS he would have been ordered off, not NAS.

Why do you think Melbourne are so confident they can get away with it?

Because we have no enforcer
It us worth getting sent to the bin for ten minutes and even losing the game over things like this
They turned up on our turf and thugged us with no fear of us retaliating as they knew we wouldn't

They won the game with that move as it intimidated us and he declared he was the alpha male on the field with that act,
It is a confrontation sport not just a collision sport. We must confront and intimidate people ourselves.

I certainly hope that we are better than what you suggest.

Yes we lost the game but which club/player has been vilified across all media for NAS action?

So we should've kept a useless front rower around just because he threw punches and missed them every single time? Bloke was a fucking muppet and we're better off without him.

The game doesn't need the biff, but it does need sorting out. There's been too many cases of people getting king hit around the world and dropping down dead. At least in the NHL they've got some protective gear on.

Good points about king hits.
In the NHL fighting is allowed and no one gets killed.

Don't disagree, but there are very clear rules around it designed for player safety in the NHL. The NRL has never had that, and it'd be an absolute legal minefield trying to introduce it now.

It's not that I didn't like the biff, I loved it, and I always getting a little excited when I see the melee start. The players are much bigger these days, and a lot of these guys aren't conditioned to fight like combat martial artists/boxers and can't/aren't prepared to take a flurry of blows like someone in a boxing ring or an octogon is.

I miss that era, but it's best left in the past.

EDIT: Maybe I'm too harsh on Kane, but if you're going to be a muppet and let your team down by getting binned, you could at least make sure it connects 😂

The NHL has fighting so that no one goons star players. Fighting is more effective at stamping out dog acts of taking out a star player than the officials were able to.
Nobody took a run at Wayne due to a useless enforcer called Dave Semenko being left wing on his line.
I saw Bob Probert from Detroit square off against our local team enforcer and I remember being terrified of what would happen
Craig Berube heavily out gunned in size through a few haymakers then clinched and held on for dear life.
Nothing is like an NHL fight. The match stops. The top enforcers calmly take off all their equipment above their waist for the fight and the crowd is a mixture of shocked, terrified, and happy it is not them.
Whoever wins the fight often wins the match.

Totally agree, Dave Semenko was an absolute animal 😁. Far form useless though, at least he landed his shots ;)

I think the difference is that there are very clear rules in place in the NHL, and have existed in that way since the game's inception as a professional sport - but even they're trying to tone it down these days and it's nowhere near as violet as it used to be.

In Rugby League it's usually just an all-in melee, or something will go down in a scrum where there isn't the umpires standing by watching with a keen eye to break it up once one of them goes down. We quite often see guys get pulled into things for jumping in to try and break it up, and quite a few wouldn't be expecting a rain of blows from an opposing player.

Tough one mate - no doubt there needs to be more done to stop this kind of rubbish, but I don't think giving 120kg+ forwards free reign to belt people who get rough is the answer nowadays.

As much as Union does my head in, at least they're very clear with their rules around head contact. Nelson would've been gone and dealt with after the game had it been the other code.

Gotta say Wrighty this one made me giggle a bit.

Ive never seen a more ineffectual flurry of (if u can even call them that) "punches" than the Evans "throwdown" last season since probably the Billy Moore v David Barnhill air swings in 90s state of origin.

Evans an enforcer? This guy would struggle to fold washing let alone karnts. I found some of the things he came up with on the field wasnt intimidating at all.....just weird.

Tbh i think "enforcing" is over rated in the modern game anyway, we have enough trouble trying to play good footy without worrying about that stuff. Jazz a prime example....when he focusses on his job rather than the niggle he's a much better player and is more value to his team.

They won the game with that move as it intimidated us
I don't know about the intimidation but the boys obviously felt screwed by the referee and were powerless to respond. It isn't often I agree with Paul Kent, but I do this time, it is a blight on the game and has to be sorted.

The Poms invented the game, lest we forget. It was the coalminers game, tough but fair.

The enforcers didn't throw haymakers like drunk monkeys, they usually did the work in the scrum or a gang tackle.

So any dude who thought he was tough and scored a cheap shot knew that he would get it back with interest, and mostly out of sight.

The West Coasters were of the same breed, like I said read Mark Grahams book about the English tours and the West Coasters in our pack.

Rant over. I hate to agree with a wanker like Paul Kent.

Do you remember a game against the Sharks in the early 2000's. One of their players was being a grubby little prick and the ref wasn't doing anything about it. A scrum packed down with Campion opposite the Sharks player. Before the ball was put in, his head went flying upwards when Campion gave him an upper cut. Sharks got the penalty but also got the message!!

Excuse me while I wipe away the tears, but do you remember Campion belting Shane Webcke at MSS?

In my best Northern accent...tek that ludd :D apologies to any genuine Northerners...BTW does anybody remember Roger Crabtree?

He came from Yorkshire to Richmond in 1965, when the Auckland comp was very strong. He later went to play for Howick.

Coot that art ya fookin Kiwi coont!!!

Excuse me, I need another tissue.

He told a story on Once A Warrior with Monty Betham where he got coat hangered from Rodney Howe. Next scrum Campion insisted on being in the front row. Next thing Howe comes up with a black eye.
