Have sat on this for a while. Frustrating that we couldn't get after it in the way we'd all have liked to, but given the last few years, and looking at the effort we put in yesterday, it's hard for me to be disappointed. Last year we lose that game by 30 at least. The Roosters might be in wobbly form, but they are still a very good team with class strike players all over who are amongst the best in their positions, especially in the backline.

Even the players who are taking the heat from most of the reactions here, you can see why they're in the team. Martin isn't a creative mastermind, but his defence is massive. Kosi was safe under the high ball despite being peppered by Walker and Keary. Pompey and Williame aren't going to break the game open by themselves, but they are playing their roles within the team and making most of the right decisions on both sides of the ball.

Losing players off the bench in that kind of heat, especially this early in the season, is genuine adversity, and we played through that. Plus we withstood huge spells of possession on our line. We need to stop putting ourselves in that position and we need to start taking advantage better in attack. Time will tell whether Webster is a good enough coach to get us there (and given the first try we scored, I'd say he has the potential to do that), but the attitude is there in spades and that's the foundation for everything else. Optimistic for the season ahead.

It is always better the day after a loss.

At least next week I am not anxious that we will go out and embarrass ourselves.

The commitment is clearly there, and dammit the NSW cup side are O for Orsome.

Got a lot of young real footballers in the Cup team that will make a big difference in the coming seasons, some are ready now for blooding.

Just gotta say it is really nice knowing your club will turn up next week.

Somethings wrong with our attack.

We ran the same block play all day and we kept running towards the sidelines leaving no space on the outside.

Its hard to find where the issue is but I feel maybe Te Maire Martin isn't squaring up enough. The only thing that ended up working was Shaun Johnson running along the line and then either playing under to Niukore or then playing out the back from there.

Maybe they're sitting too deep as well but all their body positioning is facing towards the sideline similar to Kosi running out of space where he goes out of bounds and also montoya with little room to work with.

Or maybe our centres were too dumb to run a nice line back in?

Yup agree with you on Te Maire Martin. No where near the impact we saw in the trials with Metcalf. But is Shaun Johnson overcalling maybe?

Shaun Johnson looks to be given full reigns on our attack. Some blame has to be put on him. Just the nature of his role in the team. Have always thought Shaun Johnson is more of a 6 than a 7.
Yep totally agree with this, Shaun Johnson looked his best when he played at 6 for the Sharks, on a side note, how good did Walsh look for the Broncos? Martin also looked good for the Broncos, Brown it has to be said was a complete disaster……..

A day after the loss here some reasons for the loss.

1) We couldn't complete our first set of the game. Regardless of the reason being our fault or not that is not acceptable and they scored a try off the back of it. We also gave up a try early doors against Knights that took us a long time to snare back.
When I watched the game at Westpac stadium the Knights came out to warm up and do drills ten minutes before the warriors and it was no surprise the Warriors were cold for the first 15 minutes in Wellington.
2) Our back five are the opposite of the penrith back 5 last year. The amount of early set hit ups metres our back 5 get are probably the worst in the NRL and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is getting mostered backwards every hit up more so than Reece Walsh was. This wasn't supposed to happen as Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad is a much bigger unit than Reece. Kosi is only decent yardage runner from the backs.
3) The Roosters out kicked us tactically and positionally. It is not working that Shaun Johnson is the only kicking option in our spine. Last year we had Reece to take kicks. And CHT also had a kicking game. I don't what the answer is as Tuapiki also can't kick so we can't replace Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad with Tuapiki for kicking. Volkman was dreadful in the trial but he is rapidly becoming an option. What ever technologies they can use to heal Luke Metcalf's hamstring use all of them. We need him back for his kicking alone.
3) Tohu Harris Harris says the big difference between this year and last year is that we are staying calm because we know the answers of how to get ourselves back into the game. What I saw from the cameras and expressions on faces in the last 15 minutes when we finally got some pill in attacking places was pure panic and rushed plays instead of staying calm and taking our time on offence.

Turning point of the game
Going back for the Montoya penalty. They scored a try off the back of the penalty rather than us having the ball at half way. I don't actually blame the bunker. I blame Montoya for his swinging arm. He is always being a tough guy and laying out beats for people. He needs to realise he is a winger and we need to be a disciplined team this year. He always gets too fired up. Montoya's fault not the bunker. That said just take away the bunker interferring like that as it just adds unceccessary confusion to the refereeing process.

Verdict
Another chance for the whole team this week against Cowboys before making changes. Except Jazz must come in. We need his cover defence.

The Samoan P is a bit harder than the English P. It sounds closer to a B than a P. Paulo would be closer to Bar loh although not quite at least that is how it was explained it to me.
They are butchering worse now than before. They are

Watching the other games shows the old late offload spread works wonders. Or offload inside ball, something Tuaupiki scored off on the weekend.

Some of our players to Montoya over the last few games feels like he’s too deep. When he catches he very rarely has the opportunity to take the outside as the cover come across easily. Oh for that nice South’s sweep.

Anyway, abit more speed around the ruck and a late offload here and there could open things up like it did for the Dragons tonight.

I do think Webby smart however. Defence will define the character and destination of this team and that’s what the focus is, and rightly so.

I think Webby currently has a team picked for experience and defense. It's understandable for a new coach coming to a team that was horrible last season.
It's not without its problems though. In 2018 we recruited Green because Shaun Johnson was not an organizing half . He's never been that player with Townsend either .
So somehow Te Maire Martin needs to get the ball more. He needs to be that player or failing that 1 of them will need to be replaced. I don't know if Metcalf is that player or is that more Volkman.
Webby hasn't had any knee-jerk reactions and he seems to believe in the positives of consistent selection. So I'm only expecting change when he feels confident it's the right thing to do.
I'm watching this space to see how he handles it

On set plays, they're setting up with good shape (double block play closer to the post than the sideline, which pulls in the opposing winger), but agree that they're sitting too deep for our team, as the shape they're setting up for requires speed. Unfortunately, we don't have speed with the available players.
Having the depth in the block play also takes out the effectiveness of the lead runner - as they are running into heavier traffic (e.g., Curran's runs). However, if you get a lazy/slow defender, the half drifting across opens it up for the second rower/centre to come under (i.e., Niukore's break). I think Webby will tinker with the depth at which we run those plays, but suspect the view will be we were too deep yesterday.

I would like to see someone else in the halves being able to kick .. Shaun Johnson are pretty woeful ..surely we have another player that can kick ? it seemed like the Rooters back had nothing but lollypop kicks to catch nil pressure even on their line ... yet we seem to be seem far more under pressure defusing rooter kicks ?? even the knights game pretty much the same .. we aren't going go far if kicking is weak ..and when the opposite side know this they can structure for pretty much the same kick action from Shaun Johnson ..

Ed Kosi, 0 tackles made, 3 misses, 1 ineffective. That's just awful tbh.
Yeah for his size he's a bit soft .... getting stopped easy by much smaller players.. unless he does 180 and pull fingers and gets some Manu energy pumping I don't see the point least Dallin Watene-Zelezniak puts 100% into his play ..imagine if Kosi did he would be a wreaking ball... he's 107kg for fucksake

Yeah its blatant. As soon as the passing motion start, Suuali begins the tackling motion.
And Kosi pushed over the side line.

He was on his hands and knees with a hand in him. The tackle was complete. And THEN the cover defender made contact and in a second movement shunted him over the sideline.

Without the second tackler after the tackle was completed he would have stayed in play.

Now some of these are 50/50 calls. But they are not 50/50 when 100% of them go against us…

You know the games fucked every time you take a sigh of relief when the RIGHT decision is made.

50/50 calls are a luxury we are sadly never awarded.

Just on some of the calls. I guarantee you that there would be wide spread coverage if it was a named player that went down like Jackson does on Collins shoulder. Sadly in this case the incident is being viewed as “attacker falling into defenders shoulder”
