It's because the league picks winners. If you're a darling of the media you get preferential treatment. Doesn't matter who captains us. RTS was a Daley M winner. He got disrespected by refs. It's because he's a Warrior.
Probably some truth in that.

In fairness tho Roger confronting the refs seemed more like Oliver asking "more porridge please sir".

Your first statement probably says it all tho 'the league picks winners"......

Seems the answer is we should then just play better and win.....then the calls will probably start going our way.

This statement is true.

And I believe it’s something that Webby is trying to instill.

We can’t control how we get reffed, we can’t control what the league “wants”.

We know how popular the Warriors are, they usually top things such as merchandise sales, and our membership numbers aren’t as bad as some other clubs.

But our on-field product hasn’t been where it needs to be in a while - we’ve sort of become a “meme” team in some respects, look at how much shit we got for winning last week and being 1st on the table for a brief moment. Or how “this is our year” has become somewhat of a gag.

We need to focus on what we can control, and everything else will come into place.

“Being resilient, having each others backs and the getting the finer details right” as Webby put it in his post-match presser.

We definitely looked more resilient, and we definitely turned up for each other yesterday.

But it was the finer details - our execution down the stretch where we put ourselves in a position to level the scores - that’s what will be the most important work-on if we want to win games and make the 8.

We are definitely headed in the right direction. We finally have something to build on, and work towards.

Haven’t had that since the “process” days, which ultimately failed but 2018 was a bright spot for us.

SK tried but it just wasn’t reciprocated on field in the long run. I can’t believe I ever backed Nathan Brown, a lot of folk on here knew better and kudos to them - he was a dud.

But Webby man - you can just tell, and that’s just not false hope or “faith” (another running gag when it comes to the Warriors)…

You can tell Webby is the right person, for right now, to rebuild our team on the ground.

I honestly believe we will become a finals team once again under Webby. Whether it’s this year is still TBD, but I believe we’ll get there very soon.

Pretty fair report from the game I reckon. Not much made anywhere of Collins connecting with Fords head, was it fair with him dropping? Rick O Shay I hope you’re invoicing the nrl for ranchslider repairs and a new remote.
Guess what Noitall, paid the neighbors kids to get in to the pond this morning and they found it. At least gives me something to send back to sky and get a new one due to climate change.

Really interesting that Montoya gets pulled up and charged for an innocuous tackle that didn’t cause any harm and collins gets nothing for putting our player out of the game with a shoulder to the head. It even a penalty?

Surely all you have to do as a lawyer when you rock up to the judiciary is show the two videos?

Montoya hasn’t even been charged… thought the bunker was only meant to get involved with chargeable offences…

We've seen it happen often in recent years that the bunker gets in the refs ear during a stoppage in play one or two tackles later and they have retrospectively put a player on report, but I don't think I've ever seen it given as a retrospective penalty as well unless there is such malice that the player gets sin-binned.

Does anyone know if they have changed the way they are officiating it this season and that is now what is supposed to happen?

Anybody who thinks the ref wasn’t biased towards the Roosters is just not fair dinkum.
It was that bad.
That Montoya incident just reeks of unfairness as does the Collins and Suaali incidents.

We should have a file. Which teams do we play where the ref shows active bias against the Warriors.

Yeah I heard Barlow

Must have been saying Par low

I notice Junior Paulo Parra is now called Par low and not Paul o

Samoan peeps. What’s the correct pronunciation of Juniors surname
They changed the pronunciation of Junior Paulo's name last year. I presume it is coming from how Paulo's request on how he prefers in pronounced. That has been mentioned about a few players in recent years like Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and recently Briton Nikora.

As far as the correct pronunciation for Paulo hopefully someone else answers that. Hopefully when the players are asked the correct pronunciation they correct the commentator or if its a younger guy and they feel uncomfortable dealing with the media they get someone from the club to do it.

I'm coming from a position of experience with this as my name would be just as hard to pronounce when written or said out loud when first read or said to someone. Like a lot of players who probably don't speak up I have half of the people that know me pronouncing it correctly and the other half with something easier that I've gone with as I didn't have the people around me that would speak up.

On a side note Cameron Smith going from Cam Smith to Cameron Smith was like he grew up.

The Samoan P is a bit harder than the English P. It sounds closer to a B than a P. Paulo would be closer to Bar loh although not quite at least that is how it was explained it to me.

Apologies for the essay! Thought it better to get my thoughts out in one post rather than chime in on 16 pages worth of comments... I expect many will scroll past, haha.

Pretty proud of the effort yesterday – it was there for the taking (against all odds), but we just couldn’t ice it. Not to worry, this year is about improvement rather than winning every game. We saw plenty of improvement on last year, so let’s (try and) focus on the positives eh.

(As an aside, I’m not a fan of ref-blaming – especially when we cost ourselves opportunities to win with errors – but some of the calls in this game were beyond belief and should be scrutinized by the Club and NRL. The most obvious of which being the contrast between going back three tackles for a high-shot when the Warriors are on attack, while we lose Ford to an HIA resulting from a shoulder to the face and nothing comes of it. Sigh.)

Reflecting on the game and some of the key themes of the comments thus far:
  • Egan. Glad he has had the chance to shine behind a pack with good go-forward – he has shown glimpses in the last couple of years, but now has the opportunity to hit his straps. Hope he can stay on the field and (unfortunately for Lussick) keep Lussick to leading the NSW Cup team.
  • Kosi. Played well and some of the criticisms from last year have flowed into this year. In my view, he has been solid with ball in his first two outings (removing errors from this part of his game) and has made some really good defensive decisions (although has also made a howler or two). The balanced view should be that he has improved on last year and is a solid option as the first drop winger – Montoya and Dallin Watene-Zelezniak being the starters. However, I agree with the poster that his “Footy IQ” is a bit lacking – so hope this improves with age. While he could have potentially held the ball for longer, the lack of dummy half sitch was not his fault – someone from his edge should have been there, with Pompey likely the closest.
  • Three-quarter line. I don’t think anyone disagrees that yesterday’s centre and wing combo is among the worst in the comp (Montoya is the best of a bad bunch, who has pleasantly surprised since signing with us. Kosi, see above. Williame is solid, but doesn’t have the speed, punch or pizzazz we need. Pompey (aka Brandy’s main man) is frustrating AF – athletically built, but doesn’t seem to have the Footy IQ or desire to play to his potential. The best description I can think of for how Pompey plays is aloof.). I also agree that it is unlikely any would start in other teams. But that doesn’t mean we should shit on each of the players personally – instead, we should focus on what we want and expect from them (and have seen from Kosi and Montoya, in particular)… effort. Ideally, all our centres and wingers would hone their game in NSW Cup - a luxury we haven’t had for a few years – but we still have to field an NRL side!! Our current squad doesn’t have any better options in these positions – Vailea and Leiataua are better attacking options, but need time in NSW Cup to shore up their defence (case in point – Leiataua’s poor attempt on the Roosters’ fullback yesterday would be in each team's vid session for the week they played us). If you could take the defensive skills of Williame / Pompey and attacking prowess of Vailea / Leiataua to create two centres, they’d be NRL quality. Berry is an unknown quantity in a good side, but also needs time in NSW Cup to learn the nuances of one of the toughest positions in the game. Niukore (who is our best buy, IMO) or Walker to centre is not the solve either, for fear of damaging a successful forward rotation that Webby has developed. We have to work with what we have in the current squad – celebrate/critique performances by focusing on the facts, but let’s not make it personal.
  • Shaun Johnson’s performance – if you are bagging Shaun Johnson’s performance from yesterday, uppercut yourself. That was the best all-round performance from him in some time – on both sides of the ball. Most impressive was his hustle on defence – noting his try-saver on Collins and his work from marker.
  • the 5th play kicking. Shaun Johnson’s bombs are remarkably consistent to be landing on the 10m almost every time. While this is often further than our defensive line can reach, I am starting to think that this is a tactic to ensure our defensive line is set well on the chase. Being at the game yesterday, our kick chase was poor in terms of speed but solid in terms of stopping kick return metres. I don’t recall any line breaks from kick returns (these came from poor marker D / A-defenders due to poor wrestle and quick play the balls). However, I wouldn’t mind seeing one player shooting up to put pressure on the catcher with the defensive line set behind them – that may come with match fitness. Would be interesting to know whether this is actually a tactic, as Shaun Johnson did also kick a couple to find grass/territory this week as well.
  • 6 agains. Aside from the reffing piece (see above), we didn’t put ourselves in the best position to win 6 agains or prevent giving them away this week. IMO this is because our wrestle was much poorer than last week (which could be due to the heat and/or number of tackles we made). The Roosters were almost always getting to their front and/or we had players on the ground, which makes it easier for the ref to give them away with slow play the balls. Similarly, the more we find our fronts in attack (which can result in quicker PTBs than standing in tackles, and result in defenders being out of play and/or not being set at marker), the more likely we will attract 6 agains. As Fonzie noted, watch Egan during last week’s game where he identified these opportunities superbly!
  • Te Maire Martin. Agree he has been quiet the first few weeks. I don’t have any kids, but can only assume the first few weeks/months are pretty taxing on the body and mind. He has been pretty solid on defence, but lacking on attack. Would we have been better to sit him out for a couple of weeks so he can get into the new routine in his life? The worry would be that Shaun Johnson and Volkman still haven’t quite clicked, so we may have found ourselves 0 from 2. I expect Te Maire Martin will improve in the coming weeks.
  • Heat. It was bloody hot yesterday at the stadium – I was dying in the stands, and many stood in the concourse to avoid the sun. We will be better for it next week (I hope), and completely gassed. The Townsville game is a bit later (5.30pm local time), so hopefully that’ll help. Agree with the fly-in-fly-out approach to next week's game, and lots of teams do that. I think it would be more disruptive for the team personally, and wouldn’t be all that helpful, to spend a week in that humidity…

Well put and agree on all fronts!

Jackson Ford - shoulder to head, no action from referees: View attachment 51255

I haven't watched it back, but live and side on it looked like Ford clearly ducked into the tackle at the last second. Whilst the onus is on the defender to keep the shoulder away from the head, the NRL seems to have relaxed a bit on players that collapse/trip into contact, which is good because we were getting ridiculous scenarios when the crackdown first happened.

I have only watched it live though.

Bottom 5 spine, bottom 5 backs

Refs were shit, but we still had ample opportunity to win the game and bungled it time and time again because of the above.

Webby needs to keep doing what he's doing, the big challenge is whether or not the playing group can see the light at the end of the tunnel and don't lose confidence and drop their lips if the losses start to pile up.

Just need to stay the course until we can bring/develop some genuine match winners into the side.

Geez some sour stuff from the Tigers players towards Hastings post match, ground security separating some players
