cant believe im going to be at this game. when we decided early this year that it was to much risk to travel to NZ for the homecoming (which did get messed with, so we were right). we decided to go to Canbera instead. in the middle of winter, when the boys are on a losing streak. oh well they say the war musem is great.
think of me freezing away while u watch this at home. if anyone is still bothering to watch that is

Chanel Harris-Tavita starts at fullback, Reece Walsh moves to the bench and Daejarn Asi returns at standoff for the Vodafone Warriors’ 19th-round clash against Canberra at GIO Stadium on Saturday (3.00pm kick-off local time; 5.00pm NZT).
Also back in the side is right winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak after missing last Friday night’s loss to the Parramatta Eels following a positive Covid test.

The 23-year-old Harris-Tavita delivered a player of the day performance when he was called in to start at fullback after Walsh (Covid) was ruled out of the homecoming match against the Wests Tigers at Mount Smart Stadium on July 3.
When Walsh returned last week, interim head coach Stacey Jones switched Harris-Tavita to standoff after Volkman wasn’t considered due to his illness.
The 21-year-old Asi is recalled for his fifth NRL appearance since joining the club from the North Queensland Cowboys.
Last used against St George Illawarra Dragons in round 11, he has been a key contributor for feeder club Redcliffe in the Hostplus Cup over the last six weeks. Last week he scored a try and had three try assists, a line break and a line break assist in the Dolphins’ 54-16 win over the defending premiers Norths Devils.
Watene-Zelezniak, the club’s top try scorer with seven touchdowns in 11 appearances, slots back onto the right wing for Edward Kosi.

While Jones has made selection calls in the backline, the starting forward pack is unchanged from the one originally selected to face the Eels.
Captain Tohu Harris will again wear the #10 jersey following his player of the day display in the loss to Parramatta. In 70 minutes on the field he made 170 metres from 17 runs with a line break, a line break assist and a try assist along with a game-high 44 tackles.
Walsh joins front rowers Bunty Afoa and Aaron Pene plus back rower Jack Murchie on the interchange while hooker Freddy Lussick moves to the extended bench.

The Vodafone Warriors face a Canberra side buoyed by a 20-16 win over Melbourne which has it sitting just outside the top eight.
When the two teams last met in round eight on April 30, Shaun Johnson snapped a golden point field goal to give the Vodafone Warriors their second extra time win of the season.
They have won five of the last nine encounters between the two sides, three of them at GIO Stadium.

Don’t wanna say I called it.. but I called it. Chanel in the team at fb or not at all. Walsh doesn’t deserve that fb role, too many errors for all the flashy shit he does. Love to see players rewarded for form eg asi. Not sure how they’ll utilise walsh, but assume it’ll be in and around the ruck to cause shit against a tiring d line. Finally a coach with fucking nuts. I love it. I don’t even care if it works or not, at least he’s got the balls to try shit and drop out ‘superstar’

I will go on the record and I say that I absolutely do care if it works lmao.

Pure speculation here but I wonder if Webster has asked Stacey to give Asi a go? He will get to have look at him in FG to see if they should offer a contract for next year. Otherwise good call on Walsh.
I am inclined to agree that Webster will get some say in team selection, as we are no chance of the 8, and who are we going to retain or move on?

Katoa needs to get more game time and would be good to see Frei play.

Maybe negotiate an early release for Reece Walsh in return for someone.

Asi is the interesting one. Forget the fullback role because neither of them are relevant next year.

Asi is off contract and still picked ahead of Volkman. I hope this means we're seriously considering re-signing him if he plays well.
I would be more pumped if we were trialling Asi at centre as what happens if Asi makes a reasonable but not amazing job at 6 over the next few games and then we sign him.
We have metcalf and Volkman already as reasonable halves next year to partner Shaun.
Asi also plays centre so would like to see him tried there as it would fit our vacancies better with Arthars leaving.
I think this move is not necessarily an Asi trial for next year but a legit attempt by Jones to win the match with the best available spine combination he can think of based on current form. This isn't about investing in the future as Chanel Harris-Tavita wouldn't be out there either.
I think this is some moneyball picks by Jones.
Asi is probably better than Volkman but a wee bit.
The think tank likes Chanel Harris-Tavita at fullback as he is defensively sound
They must be thinking of bringing walsh in at standoff in the second half.
Perhaps they discussed giving walsh a full game at 6 but decided this compromised minimised their risk exposure better given they might not trust walsh defending at 6
