Nothing like playing a clinical side like the Panthers to show up how ineffective our game is.

Our attack is still pedestrian under Jones despite talk of a more freewheeling style. One out runs, set up play after set up play, lack of support runners, take out Walsh and throw in some very average 5th tackle option taking and it all amounts to an insipidly benign attack that was never going to threaten the Premiers.

This isn’t a rant, Ive been thinking this for a while when I say how mind blowing it is for a Warriors side to be so incredibly structured given where the game has gone and how teams are playing in 2022. Honestly it’s fkn embarrassing to me that we game this way now. The club has completely lost its DNA.

I use to think our attack looked gimp under old man Green but Shaun Johnson‘s seems to have stepped right into those shoes. I’d imagine one of the reasons a lot of you guys, long term Warriors supporters like me got onboard with the club was because of how they played the game back then, the ‘razzle dazzle’ the offloading, the freakish tries etc.

Where did it all go? was it Mooks and his percentage/process football. Whatever, the mojo has long gone and I’m not sure the move back to NZ is going to be the spark plug to this side some people seem to think it’ll be.

Agree.

We dont play Warrior ball Im sure Jazz would love to off load a bit more.

We are missing our hard running front row. Backed up by off loading edge forwards and halves that can kick to areas for wingers to leap and catch.

A few observations:

- Arthars solidified his side.
- Arthars and Pompey are our best centres (well done Stacey)
- Addin Fonua-Blake strengthened the middle 134m. Still would like to see him hitting the line with more sting though. Hasn’t smashed into the defence since the knee clash last year - change of technique?
- Jazz 130m - small man big heart
- Afoa 122m - we called for him to do more and he responded. Some runs with venom in there as well
- Chanel Harris-Tavita tried hard and probed nicely - suited to 14. (Well done Stacey)
- Volkman was quiet but I could see the potential - strongly built and physically ready for first grade. Some deft plays.
- Harris struggled for speed but is still coming back from his ACL.
- Aitken out of the second row solidified our defence - he’s small and even though he stops people he doesn’t dominate in attack or defence. Curren, Murchie and Harris are a physically imposing lineup. I’m liking what Murchie offers.

The selection was solid with the best of what we have got (Arthars and Pompey our best centres, Chanel Harris-Tavita to 14, backing our future in Volkman, Murchie in the back row who performed). Good job Stacey.

Not gonna say anything negative...that result is what it is at this stage.

What i will say is this...i love how much Curren hates the fuck out of losing. Scores and you can see he cant stand the celebration of his teamates. Same as him giving it to Shaun Johnson the other week. His attitude is exactly what is needed in the next few years.
Is he signed till end of next year or am I correct in remembering that he was 1 of the players that got an extension?

Thanks for this, was exactly what I was looking for in this thread. Had the game on my phone but only saw very short bits and pieces as was out at a family event so was in my pocket most of the time. Was Keen to watch due to volkman and Stacey making changes.
Without watching the game I'm thinking overall it wasn't too bad according to the score line and was impressed that kept them to I think only 12 points at half time. Hearing someone in here mention we played better than the final score line reflects is a positive in my mind.

Yea was the result we expected just not the big blowout. The facts still are we are on a long losing streak. If we don't beat the Tigers at home nxt then prepare to see a tombstone put up in a forgotten corner of Mt Smart saying 2022 season was another failed year with more chance of getting the spoon than any other positives.

It's sad that a 40 - 6 loss is looked upon as okay by some people. That is how far our expectations have dropped and probably reflects the players expectations. Preseason a top 8 finish was the barest pass mark, now avoiding the spoon will be some sort of success.
Average performances ( by our standards ) are not acceptable .

We did lose our last 5 or 6 games straight against easier competition. Can't really expect much more at this stage.

Just an observation. Who said it's OK to bring the rats tail back?... half Penrith team are rocking the rat.
i had the rat 4th form porirua college early eighties.... i started that fad

Walsh looked good tonight, however that big break up the middle highlights what he continues to try to do - force the play. Clearly he's still young but when this team is playing so poor he tries to take it all on himself and tries those miracle plays more often than not.

Also, we looked pretty good a few weeks against the Dragons, kicking to DWZs wing and it seems we've stopped doing this all of a sudden? Surely up against a shorter Taylan May we would have used one of our strengths? Confusing.

Broncos have had a pretty young team for a few years and had some terrible results, and are only now starting to look like all that heart ache was worth something. Are our team learning and growing? Is there improvement on the horizon? Jeeze I hope so

I’ve come to terms that we may very likely get the wooden spoon and think it may be effective in showing the club that big changes are necessary for the next coach, the biggest being an adjustment to attitude and becoming confident we can win again and not just compete, along with a complete overhaul of the defensive structure and fitness. I think with the right appointed coach there’s no reason to expect multiple years at the bottom as the knights did but more similar to the broncos a couple of years back and competitive again now after sorting their roster last year. The eels are an interesting one, Arthurs has had them since 2013, in 2017 they went on a streak when Mitchell Moses joined them and made the top 8 after minimal success leading up to that. 2018 they won the wooden spoon and have played finals footy ever since, looks as though they’ve missed a premiership with the roster they have and a coach in the job that’s potentially becoming stale to the team but success can be achieved with the right changes.

Broncos had young forwards too where I think we have a young backline and experienced forwards, next year anyway. I thought Volkman combined with Walsh better than any halve we’ve had in the role this year and really positive for their first game together. His short ball to a rampaging Curran was great and the sole try we got was all of the future of team combining. Watching the nrl I quite like our strategy going forward if there is one of experienced forwards and young backs as I think the game is more suited to speed and agility. There are still the great players like Munster and Hughes but I think the game has passed by the likes of Shaun Johnson, Moses, Keary etc and the new guard is coming through like Walker, Mam, Brown and others and then there’s the experienced halve with the young like Reynolds/Mam or Townsend/Dearden.

It's sad that I'm looking at 40-6 as almost an OK result.

I did think there were a few positives like Walsh, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, return of Arthars. Most of the forwards seemed to go well.

Same story with conceding soft tries though. I don't know who or what is to blame but geez we let blokes just waltz through.
How do you say DZW as a positive then in the next sentence talk about conceding soft tries, which is exactly what he did from a really poor tackle in the corner, letting in their 3rd try right on 1/2 time?

12-0 vs 18-0 was a game changer for me, because that’s when I switched off the game. All because of Dallin Watene-Zelezniak!!

Siro was another one. Terrible play the ball losing possession and the Penrith score. 5 mins later we’re on attack, second tackle right on their try line and he loses the ball… shocker…

Massive hole left by Murchie and Harris and Dylan Walker zips through to score under the posts….

Yet everyone was going on about Shaun Johnson in the game day thread??????

Some of you fellas need to take off your one eyed goggles.

Volkman had an ok debut. He’s a poor man’s Kodi Nikorima and is going to have problems when it comes to defense.

Anyone thinking Mt Smart and eating mums homemade cooking is going to be a game changer better think again…

We desperately need more size back. Some of our guys got absolutely belted yesterday. Jazz getting folded in 1/2 by Kikau pretty much summed up the game in one tackle.

Dam, I feel so salty….

Couldn't agree more. Too many soft tries conceded and needless penalties. I really have to question POS recruitment. He has left the next manager with some expensive turds.

Volkman was steady on debut but doesn't have me jumping up and in excitement. That been said, we need the forwards to set the platform and they were totally outclassed night, like most weeks
