Hot prospect Volkman signs for three years from 2023

Sydney Roosters halfback Ronald Volkman, rated one of rugby league’s hottest prospects, has been signed by the Vodafone Warriors for three seasons from 2023.
The Vodafone Warriors fended off approaches from a number of rival clubs to secure the gifted teenager and further bolster their roster for next season and beyond.

They’ve already secured experienced Manly Warringah centre Dylan Walker, seasoned Newcastle second rower Mitchell Barnett, Parramatta second rower Marata Niukore and Cronulla Sutherland playmaker Luke Metcalf for 2023 onwards.

"Ronald is an exceptional young talent who will add another dimension to our squad,” said Vodafone Warriors general manager football Craig Hodges.

“When we signed Reece Walsh around this time last year, he hadn’t played in the NRL but it was obvious he would very soon and make an immediate impact.

“Ronald is the same. He has wonderful skills and is just waiting for his chance in the NRL.”

Volkman, who’s of Samoan heritage, had an outstanding schoolboy rugby union career at noted nursery Waverley College in Sydney’s eastern suburbs before being signed by the Roosters.

Touted in the preseason as one of the players to watch in 2022, he has found himself in a queue of playmakers behind Luke Keary, Sam Walker, Drew Hutchinson and Lachlan Lam.

He has so far had a handful of games for Roosters feeder club North Sydney in the New South Wales Cup. In six appearances last year he finished with seven try assists and five line break assists.

Also a goal kicker, he has come through the grades playing for the Roosters at under-16, under-18 and under-20 level. He was also a New South Wales rugby union representative at age grade level.

When the Warriors pitched Ronald Volkman the opportunity to become the long-term successor to Shaun Johnson in the club’s No.7 jersey, the usually self-assured teenager had to overcome a rare case of imposter syndrome.

Considered one of the game’s best teenage prospects after standing out in the lower grades for the Roosters, 19-year-old Volkman was pinching himself when the Warriors came calling with a deal through to the end of 2025 and the chance to serve an apprenticeship alongside Johnson.

"When my manager told me the Warriors really wanted me, and how long they wanted me for, I kind of second guessed him, I said ‘bro, are you sure? I still have a lot to prove’,” Volkman told NRL.com.

“It was a weird time because that was the first time I had experienced a club really wanting me to be a part of what they wanted and a part of their future.

“I jumped straight at the opportunity, because you don’t get that many opportunities like that, especially considering I had no first-grade experience.

In winning the race to sign Volkman ahead of several other NRL suitors, Warriors general manager of football Craig Hodges said being able to offer the chance to learn off Johnson was a key factor.

“That was certainly part of the opportunity and I think Ronald was able to see that, that he gets the opportunity to play with, learn off, and train beside Shaun, and even Chanel [Harris-Tavita],” Hodges told NRL.com.

“What a great experience for any young half.

“Then he gets an opportunity one day to hopefully take over from them.

“We’re really excited and confident about the pathway we have chosen [as a club].

“Our challenge I guess was to get that message across to Ronald.”

Volkman said Johnson was already feeding through some priceless advice about the reality of being a young playmaker in the NRL Telstra Premiership.

“He’s been really good actually and giving me a lot of advice about what to do, as well as what he missed out on doing when he was around my age,” Volkman said.

“He’s really backed me and it’s good to hear that from one of the older boys who you looked up to when you were younger.”

In his two NRL games to date Volkman has experienced both the harsh reality of a 40-6 beating at the hands of defending premiers Penrith, and the thrill of an emotional 22-2 win over the Tigers in the Warriors’ return to Auckland.

Second-rower Josh Curran said the senior playing group have been impressed with his tendency to speak up in meetings and on the field.

“For a young kid he has stepped up. We were in the huddle after we scored (against the Tigers) and he was yelling at the older boys,” Curran told NRL.com.

“That’s what we love. We don’t care how young you are.

“He’s directing the team around well and working with Shauny.

“He’s got a big future ahead of him.”

With Harris-Tavita stepping away from the game at the end of this season, Volkman and incoming signing Luke Metcalf, who will join from the Sharks on a two-year deal next year, look set to compete for a spot alongside Johnson in the halves in 2023.

Good read and a bit of insight, I think he’s going to be a great signing for us. Sounds like Volkman and Metcalf competing for a spot next year. Hope they start developing him as halfback at some point being Shaun Johnson last year next year and I can’t see much at the moment to say he’d be able to play past that.

Would they be eyeing Te Maire Martin to take over from Shaun Johnson as an experienced halve? Will be interesting to see where they all fit with Metcalf playing halfback too, is he the long term option? Moses does a lot of the eels kicking and we need someone to steer us around the park past Shaun Johnson. Brown would be brilliant though.

Interim head coach Stacey Jones has made significant line-up changes for the Vodafone Warriors’ final game at their Redcliffe base before their Mount Smart Stadium homecoming match in Auckland on July 3.

In his second game since stepping in for the departed Nathan Brown, Jones has highlighted his selection by handing 19-year-old Ronald Volkman his NRL and club debut in the 15th-round encounter with the competition-leading Penrith Panthers at Moreton Daily Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off local time; 7.30pm NZT).

Volkman, who arrived from the Sydney Roosters last month, is poised to become Vodafone Warrior #272 partnering veteran Shaun Johnson in the halves.

Set to re-join the side is first-choice prop Addin Fonua-Blake after being sidelined with a foot injury since the round 11 loss to the St George Illawarra Dragons. He has been named on the extended bench in #23.

There’s a change in the centres with Jesse Arthars coming in for Rocco Berry. Arthars played seven of the first eight games of the season including each of the club’s four wins over the Wests Tigers, Brisbane, North Queensland and Canberra but picked up a shoulder injury in the golden point win against the Raiders.

With Ben Murdoch-Masila (elbow) ruled out, prop Bunty Afoa is listed to start his 99th career game although a front row shuffle is likely if Fonua-Blake comes through training this week.
Experienced second rower Euan Aitken (concussion) has been ruled out which results in Josh Curran coming into the starting back row.

Promising Vodafone Warriors halfback Ronald Volkman is set to have season-ending surgery.

The 20-year-old will be operated on this Friday after ongoing issues with a shoulder injury.
“Ronald has had some minor shoulder instability episodes over his career, the most recent being late in the game against Wests Tigers,” said Vodafone Warriors head of performance Balin Cupples.

“For his age and at this stage of his NRL career we need to act on these to give him the best long-term outcomes.”

The two-game NRL rookie will miss the Vodafone Warriors’ last games of the season but will be able to complete the majority of preseason training ahead of the 2023 campaign.

He made his debut against the Penrith Panthers and his second in the homecoming series game against the Tigers.

Former Sydney Roosters halfback Ronald Volkman and hooker Freddy Lussick have settled in quickly after joining the Vodafone Warriors this week.

The 19-year-old Volkman’s three-year contract from 2023 through to 2025 was announced last week but he was released early to linked up with his new club on Monday.

They were in Redcliffe by Monday afternoon, trained with their new teammates for the first time on Tuesday morning and by mid-afternoon they had been named on the extended bench for the Vodafone Warriors' Magic Round match against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday (3.00pm kick-off local time; 5.00pm NZT).

“We’re thrilled to be able to add Ronald and Freddy to our squad right now,” said Vodafone Warriors general manager football Craig Hodges.

“We were keen to have Ronald onboard for the rest of this season rather than waiting for 2023. It’s beneficial for him and for us to have him settled into the club sooner rather than later.

Volkman, who balanced rugby league and rugby union as a schoolboy star, is a gifted young half who’s regarded as one of the hottest prospects in the game.

Along with Volkman he has played for the Roosters’ feeder club the North Sydney Bears in the New South Wales Cup. He also played at under-18 and under-20 level for the Roosters.
