Experienced Super League coach Richard Agar will join the Vodafone Warriors on a two-year deal as an assistant coach from next season.
The 50-year-old Agar’s coaching résumé includes head coach roles with Hull FC, Wakefield Wildcats, Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos while he is a current assistant coach with Toa Samoa.

“Richard has tremendous experience in top level coaching and will add huge value to our coaching team,” said Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George.
“He’ll provide terrific support for our new head coach Andrew Webster in his role alongside his fellow assistant coaches Stacey Jones and Justin Morgan.”
After starting his coaching career with the York City Knights, Agar stepped up to the Super League where he guided Hull FC from 2008-2011 and the Wakefield Wildcats from 2012-2014.
He was with the Warrington Wolves from 2014-2017, helping them to the Challenge Cup final and Super League grand final in 2016, before becoming head coach with the Rhinos from 2019 until early this season. In 2020 he led Leeds to victory over Salford in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
Agar has also previously coached France, taking the side to the quarter-finals in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. Along with Webster, he joined Toa Samoa’s coaching staff this year.

Doesn't have a very good reputation in England. Friend of mine is a Warrington fan and said "he knows how to shut down an attack. Sadly it's the one he coaches"

Looking at it through my glass half full eyes I'm thinking he's one of those people who has talent as a coach but can't do head coach. Totally different mindset, the latter you have to take tough decisions with the players that not everyone can do. Not everyone can hack being the face of the club either.

Comes across as a really nice guy and he's from a RL family (Dad coached Fev to a Wembley win). I'd love him to do well and wish him the very best of luck

Place is a freaking circus, it does not surprise me we are recruiting from an entirely different hemisphere.

Our best shot landed us a Penrith assistant.

I agree there, but he was assistant at Wire and isn't remembered fondly there.

People that have worked with him speak highly of him so the proof will be in the pudding, but not an inspiring appointment in my opinion.

From my totally uninformed eyes I’d reckon the head coach should be slightly distant from the players, respected and maybe even slightly feared (think Alex Ferguson). Assistant coaches closer to the players and a link between the players and the head coach. Assistant coaches micro managing the players and there to do the daily grind and work the players attitudes out.

Assistants more approachable and friendlier, head coach some distance given the tough decisions about dropping players, moving them on etc.

He managed to win a Challenge Cup as an Assistant with Hull & won as Head Coach at Leeds. Better CV then anyone we've currently got. Most of the responses I've read on a UK based Facebook page were positive but pointed out his strengths lie as an Assistant

I went to the 83 Final. My last year at university, went down with three mates. Pissed that night and crashed on the lounge floor at my mates sisters house in London. Those were the days when I’d spend all my spare money on entertaining myself, nowadays it’s soft furnishings chosen by the missus

You are dead right.

I remember Graham Lowe saying once that was a reason not to promote an assistant to head, at the same club. He is too close to the players.

If you are going to quote Ferguson, he was a total bully and control freak, oh and prize Scottish arsehole. Sort of loyal to his players in public though. That was a Brown low point.

If I hear correctly Wayne Bennett is DA BOSS, runs the whole bloody club, but the assistants do all the work.

As for Agar doing a good job, SK was one of the most sought after assistants around, and was highly regarded both at the Storm and Broncos.
