Exciting young Brisbane fullback Reece Walsh, widely regarded as one of the hottest young talents in the game, has been snared by the Vodafone Warriors on a three-year contract from next season.

With the Broncos on a development contract this season, Walsh represented both the Queensland State of Origin Under 18s and Australian Schoolboys in 2019.

The Tweed Seagulls star impressed for the Broncos in their NRL trial against Wynnum Manly last month.

He’s yet another product from the famed Keebra Park State High School rugby league nursery which produced his future teammate Ben Murdoch-Masila along with the likes of Benji Marshall and Payne Haas.

Of Australian Indigenous and Maori heritage, Walsh has been wowing observers with his skill level.

“With experience I believe Reece will go on to become a top-line NRL fullback in the coming years. He’ll complement Wayde (Egan), Kodi (Nikorima) and Chanel (Harris-Tavita) perfectly in our spine.

With captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck finishing with the Vodafone Warriors at the end of the season, head coach Nathan Brown said Walsh shaped as a wonderful replacement.

“Reece has all the attributes in his game that the really good players have,” he said.

“His speed and game sense are things that can make a difference in our team. We won’t be putting pressure on Reece by making big statements about his game but we will give him all the guidance to make sure his game is ready for the start of 2022. We want him to work hard and train hard and he will have a great career in front him.”

A left-footed goal kicker, Walsh slotted six from six attempts and scored a try in the Australian Schoolboys’ 36-20 win over the Junior Kiwis in 2019.

Broncos rookie Reece Walsh has requested a release to join the Warriors this season as Brisbane prepare a new upgraded offer for Bulldogs target Brendan Piakura.

Walsh, 18, was signed on a lucrative three-year contract to join the Warriors from 2022 last week and is now looking to fast-track the move with a release from his Broncos development deal.

The development continues a dramatic day at Red Hill after boom back-rower Jordan Riki re-signed with Brisbane on a three-year deal that ties him up until 2024.

Riki's retention is a significant boost given the ongoing raids on Brisbane's best talent, with Walsh the first of many off-contract youngsters to decide his future and now follow up with an early exit request.

NRL.com understands Brisbane have it made clear they will only grant the release if a player is provided in return by the Warriors.

The Kiwi club, currently based on the Central Coast, is willing to consider the proposal given it would bring Walsh under Roger Tuivasa-Sheck's tutelage before he departs for rugby union next season.

The Broncos are yet to make any official comment regarding Walsh.

Walsh was identified as a No.1 replacement for the Warriors skipper last year, being wined and dined by club consultant Phil Gould before meeting Nathan Brown and committing to a three-year deal.

He is rated one of the best young prospects in the game and was being sized up for Brisbane's own fullback role next year.

Warriors fullback told Reece Walsh about the benefits to joining the Warriors.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has revealed what he said to Reece Walsh to convince him to come to the Warriors.

Walsh, the 18-year-old future star has signed a three-year deal with the club from next season, in a deal worth a reported $1.2 million and he will be Tuivasa-Sheck’s replacement at fullback.

Before agreeing to join the Warriors, Walsh met Tuivasa-Sheck for a coffee, with the rugby bound fullback telling him why a move to the club would be good for him.

“Because it’s heading in a really good direction, especially with the people that have come on board, players and staff wise,” Tuivasa-Sheck said he told Walsh.

“I think he’s going to do really well here, especially with the pack we have now.

“He’s going to love that front foot ball off the pack and he’s young, he’s got some young players around him, he’s got young halves that he can grow in this club and there are a group of players here who are in their mid 20s and under who can grow with him.”

The Warriors haven’t been asked to release a player to the Broncos to pave the way for Walsh to join the club early, but could be willing to give someone up if it’s the right person.

Walsh, who is signed on a development contract with the Broncos for the remainder of the season, wants to begin his time with the Warriors early and there have been suggestions that the Broncos want a player in return to allow Walsh to go.

But Stuff understands the Broncos haven’t asked for anyone, however the Warriors would be willing to let a player go in the other direction if it was one they didn’t think was part of their future.

The Warriors wouldn’t be willing to let go of a player they felt had potential at the club.

So it would have to be someone they felt was surplus to requirements.

Looking at the Warriors’ roster Hayze Perham, Jackson Frei and Josh Curran appear to be the most likely options as all are off contract at the end of the year and are unlikely to be given new deals.

While the Warriors would like to get Walsh early, the negotiations to make this happen are between the Broncos and Walsh’s management.

There’s a feeling at the Broncos that it would be a bad look to give an early release to someone as talented as Walsh, but the reality is that damage was done when Walsh chose moving to the Warriors ahead of signing a new deal at the former powerhouse club.

Walsh will play against a number of the Warriors players on Sunday when Norths Devils play Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup.

But he won’t be able to play in the NRL for the Broncos until round 11 at the earliest, because he is on a development contract.

If he does make the early switch to the Warriors, he is expected to play some games this season, either at fullback if Tuivasa-Sheck is injured, come into the halves where he has played some of his junior footy, or he could even have the No 14 role.

However, the main reason why the Warriors would like to have him early is to prepare him for 2022, so that he builds a relationship with the players before they head back to New Zealand and also gets to learn off Tuivasa-Sheck.

When the Warriors head back to New Zealand, it will be a big upheaval for the Sydney born Walsh and Tuivasa-Sheck gave him some valuable advice about how to deal with that.

“He’s been at another system and picked up some good things,” Tuivasa-Sheck said.

“I was telling him about coming over and keeping a standard. Working on what’s a high standard and what’s not.

“Living away from Australia and where his norm is, it’s about keeping those standards and staying strong and true to them.”

The Warriors are keen to get their hands on Broncos young gun Reece Walsh before he begins his contract with the club next year but coach Kevin Walters is refusing to budge.

Warriors utility back Hayze Perham's name has been mentioned as a possible player involved in a swap but there's been no discussion between the Warriors and Broncos about him.

It is understood the Warriors are open to the idea of allowing one of their contracted players to join Brisbane this year if the Broncos agree to release Walsh, who has signed a long-term deal to replace rugby-bound skipper Roger Tuivasa-Sheck at fullback, starting in 2022.

Walters said on Friday there were no plans "at the moment" to allow Walsh to walk early.

"We will look at it over the weekend, but we feel Reece will add some value to our side this year, he is a good young player and we had every intention of playing him this year in the NRL," he said.

"Even though he has signed with another club, my intention is to keep him here. We will need him as the season goes on."

Tuivasa-Sheck on Thursday said he had played a part in getting Walsh to sign on the dotted line with the Warriors.

"I had a coffee with him and he seems like a real down-to-earth person and that is a good value straight away," Tuivasa-Sheck said of the 18-year-old Queensland junior representative.

"I think he's going to do really well here, especially with the pack we have now.

"He's young, he's got some young players around him and he's got young halves that he can grow with at this club. There are a group of players here who are in their mid-20s and under who can grow with him."

Asked why he believed joining Warriors was a good career move for Walsh, Tuivasa-Sheck said: "Because it's heading in a really good direction, especially with the people that have come on board – players and staff-wise".

Walters's main focus right now is getting his team's first win of the year when they host fellow winless team Canterbury on Saturday night.

He would solve our lack of ability to draw top draw 5/8th . Unless Shaun Johnson has a late return haha.

My issue is, if this team cant put Roger Tuivasa-Sheck into a hole, and we are signing an obviously talented offensive FB vs possibly the best defensive FB in the history of the NRL, it is going backward, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck wins games in defense and total points saved. Some how before start of next year we need people backing up an obviously talented forward back full of offloaders and our spine working together to engage the FB in the line but running onto the ball through the hole, if its Kodi, he needs to have set plays and also be hands out in front, drawing defense or putting them in 2 minds, like all good 5/8ths do.

Fixing our spine is mission critical now. And all we need is a top notch consistent 5/8th and a hooker who knows when to clear the ruck immediately, when to run and when to engage offside markers. Egan is still engaging markers way too often and he lacks the speed we need. He has a big heart, but Warriors deserve a spine rivalling 2018. Now we have an amazing forward pack, its all we missing from being a top 4 side.

To be honest im neither angry or happy. Wasnt fully impressed by turner. Had the fancy feet but just didnt see enough footy smarts to be a half. Im sure wel see another team pit him in the right positions then wel see the best of him. I dont think he was used correctly here. So in a way id like to see him develop properly (not that the broncos is a better move). But Walsh definitely looks to be the better player imo. Theres a touch of class and competitiveness about him that i ddnt really see from turner. Unless we were going to use PT as a centre then id rather we keep Perham.
