The Vodafone Warriors and Redcliffe Dolphins have today jointly announced a landmark Trans-Tasman rugby league partnership with far-reaching benefits for both organisations.

The trailblazing relationship brings together New Zealand’s only professional rugby league franchise and the highly successful Brisbane powerhouse which has produced some of the biggest names to come out of Queensland including the legendary Arthur Beetson, Petero Civoniceva, Chris Close, John Ribot, former Vodafone Warrior Brent Tate and Daly Cherry-Evans.

Vodafone Warriors CEO Cameron George and Redcliffe Leagues Club CEO Tony Murphy say the partnership is founded on a shared vision which will enable outstanding young players from Queensland and New Zealand to benefit from the best pathways structure available in the game.

“It’s time we revamped our club and in the Redcliffe Dolphins we have the perfect partners who share the same big dreams for the future as us,” said George.

“Redcliffe is a hugely successful club with a big talent pool and well-established senior and junior pathways.

“We have to improve as an organisation to achieve the expectations we have of ourselves. We need to be different and do things differently to secure the future we see for our great club.”

Murphy said the Redcliffe Dolphins have identical ambitions.

“The Warriors-Dolphins partnership is a fantastic fit for our club moving forward post Covid-19,” he said.

“All clubs need to look at their current structure into the future and we have found a perfect solution for both clubs.

“The mutual benefits between both our footy clubs will be enormous. Our aim is to help the Warriors win that elusive NRL premiership and establish an Aussie base here at Dolphin Stadium.

“Outside of footy the benefits to both our regions with tourism and business is something our council is very excited about.”

Redcliffe Dolphins general manager of football operations Grant Cleal said the opportunity was far-reaching for both clubs.

“The Dolphins are joining forces with a very professional organisation that cares about the game,” he said.

“That has been more than evident during the Vodafone Warriors’ relocation to Australia during the successful reboot of the 2020 NRL season.

“Purely on the football side of things, the partnership will assist the premiership aspirations of both clubs while fostering the growth of junior rugby league in the entire Moreton Bay Region.”

George said the Vodafone Warriors had changed their structure by joining the Queensland Cup after withdrawing from the New South Wales Rugby League’s Canterbury Cup NSW competition.

Through this initiative a number of players from outside the Vodafone Warriors’ NRL squad will appear for the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup each week.

There will also be potential for the Vodafone Warriors to play games at Redcliffe’s Dolphin Stadium.

George and Murphy said their clubs will align their pathway programmes to capture talent to achieve long-term on-field success while staff from both clubs will work closely together to create better opportunities for personal development.

• Redcliffe has won a record six Queensland Cup premierships since the competition started in 1996 while being runner-up six times and winning the minor premiership six times.
• The club is situated in the Moreton Bay Region, the third biggest local government area in Australia.

Does this mean all of our top thirty and development squad will get a game each week

6 or 7 spots sounds good but will it be enough for all our extended squad

And what about other developing guys not on a list eg Preston wiki is there room for him

Taking off our Warriors hat and I don’t know much about the Auckland scene and their competitions such as Fox Memorial, but could this be a good thing for the Auckland competitions? Could this strengthen the age group comps while our best of the rest get some hardened Aussie experiences? I’ve watched plenty of QLD Cup/ISP and I think it’s a much better competition than the NSW Cup.

The main downside is our guys aren’t training with the main team as much but you can bet whoever is coaching the Warriors next year should have a big say in what our guys do in Redcliffe.

The best young players in NZ by the time they progress are often identifiable by all clubs. They best 16, 17 year olds in NZ rugby codes could pick to go to any of the other 15 NRL club plus sometimes the Super Rugby Clubs. They simply wont choose to come to or stay at the Warriors.

Warriors best opportunity is to work with these kids at a young age - develop them, build some loyalty/connection.

Not about a community charity programm - the clubs only way off becoming a top force is dependent on them developing local talent.

Currently they are signing reserve graders from Auzzie clubs - like Josh Curran, Wade Egan, Lachlan Burr, Taane Milne, Jack Murchie, Patrick Herbert etc. And have failed on signing so many rising NRL players - list would go on forever who they made a play at and were unsuccesful.

Herbert has offered good value and Burr reasonable value.

To Radcliff .I will wait and see before I can say

I’ll be interested to see how this goes. Building up a relationship with a Queensland club can only be a good thing. We can always set another ISP team cup. Like others unsure how it’s going to work for players going between redcliffe and Auckland.

Can definitely see the benefits of sending 18-20 year olds out to Redcliffe for a year to play footy though.

You would like to think there is some upside to fringe first graders playing for Redcliffe as they are such a strong club with good success and having access to their talent pool.
It’s the young guys 16-18 years that I’m interested in seeing how they structure the pathway for NZ based players.
Katoa was playing Flegg to get him in the groove last season before moving to top grade. While he is an exception it was an example of how this grade intergrated new players to the club structure.
If Redcliffe are the pathway from 16yrs you would think not many NZ based talent will play for them until they are in the main NRL squad of 30

The NRL know Kiwis have an affinity with Q'land & tbh there would be better opportunities for our best young players also easier recruitment within Aus for first grade.

V'landys has confirmed he wants a 17 team comp with a new Brisbane franchise. Maybe he sees us relocating there, with some other city like Perth coming in to make up the 17, who knows. Lot of advantages to being based in Brissy, I'd support them if we still got some games in NZ. It would be pretty sad for the game here though, wouldn't be the same and the Warriors are bound to lose some of their remaining NZ fanbase if it ever happens.

It doesnt matter about Q Cup talent at all. You dont need to be based or have any affiliation.
You can play for an NRL club unless you are in their Top 36.

If you want Q Cup talent -NRL club would have full access to stats and footage. Hence they can watch aplayer like Taunoa-Brown. A Q Cup player will be released if NRL opportunity comes along.

This redcliffe deal is nothing but cost-cutting and ill-advised strategy.

Theyre wouldnt be better opportuniteis for our best young players - our best young players wont join the warriors.

They will just join other NRL clubs who actually have pathway teams to play and actually train.

It wont be easier to recruit australian players. So not only do they have to move to NZ but have to take 8 hours round trips when not selected.
