This has got to be the most underwhelming back line match up this year...

Team comparisons:
Moylan vs Fish - give Fish the edge on speed, and ironically experience. Moylan is proving to be a good up and comer though. I'd give Fish a slight edge in this match up (purely based on speed).
Robinson vs Tupou - speed goes to Robinson, experience goes to Tupou. I'm thinking a tie (the first of many to come)
Brown vs Henry - I'm thinking tie. Both will play their hearts out and neither will want the other one to better them.
Whare vs Tuimavave - Whare. Not saying much - but Whare.
Simmons vs Vatuvei - Simmons. Faster, more reliable. Vatuvei has more potential upside, but Simmons is in good form and if they kick in behind Vatuvei - it could be a long night.
John vs Leuluai - I really hope TL picks up the points on our former U20s half who we let go.
Walsh vs Shaun Johnson - Shaun Johnson. Walsh has a better short kicking game. But that's it really.

Now it gets interesting when we move into the forwards:
Plum vs Rapira - going forward - should be Sammy, on defence - Plum - who is one of the biggest legit hitters in the comp. Tie
Kingston vs Friend - going with Kingston for his ability moving forward, equal on defence.
Grant vs Packer - Grant. No disrespect to Packer, but he has to aim up to get over the top.
Manu vs Mateo - Manu. Mateo hasn't got the form on the field this year.
Robinson vs Mannering - Mannering should edge him - even on a bad day.
Docker vs Lowrie - going to call tie on current form.

Bench:
Segeyaro vs Godinet - going with Segeyaro who has been in good form.
Anderson vs Matulino - Matulino
Masoe vs Lillyman - should be big Jake
Newton vs Taylor - well Taylor is a marquee player... but Newton is very tough round the edges and experienced - so tie ;)

Refs: Sutton and Perenara - both have a history of making some funny calls against us.

Summary - with the two backlines on display, whichever forward pack gets over the top of the other should win the day. On paper our forwards are a lot stronger than theirs (especially without McKendry), but theirs are in better form than ours... Interestingly, both teams went out to a lead early in their games last week, the warriors (as we all know) were run down, but Penrith held out Melbourne, an impressive defensive performance.

Big call, but I think we should win this one. if they switch off in the second half, no chance, but there's only a couple of positions on the field they're actually significantly stronger than us, and if you break it down to:
Outside backs - probably tied
Halves - we have an edge
Props - excluding Grant, none of their front rowers should make our team at all
Back-row - Sika Manu would make our team, none of their others should...
Hooker is the only spot they'd have a slight edge over us (speaking of which, Kingston is off contract I think - he'd look great at Mt Smart and we could use a new captain)...

So yeah - going with the warriors this week, but I'm guessing it will be a topsy turvy game where the warriors team that shows up will decide if we win or if we lose.

That Penrith team shouldn't exactly strike fear into the hearts of any opposition... except the Warriors in the last 20 minutes perhaps.

But seriously, if the boys can't get a win against a depleted Panthers side, even with our current injury toll, then I think we can wave goodbye to the season.

Time to get the job done, nuff said.

Two weeks ago ME reckoned we needed to win 11 from 17.Well according to most pundits we know that historically:
28 points - might get us in
30 points- should get us in and
32 points -will get us in
ME needs to aim for 30 points to probably be safe...hopefully...therefore two weeks ago we needed to win 12 from 17.Since then 1 from 2, so now we need 11 from 15 to be probably safe on 30 points(but not guaranteed safe ,mind you)...but still does not alter the fact that for the good of the season this really in terms of where we are at is an absolutely must win game.
If we are to believe that we are improving, dudded by refs and decimated by injuries but still a chance of making the eight, all at the same time, then we must surely beat the lowly Panthers...shouldn't we? because if we can't we are not really all that likely to then win 11 from 14.
Must win game for the boys for hope to remain flickering!!!!!!

We pretty much need a 3 game winning streak to begin about now. One where we win by 6+ every game, to get our differential headed in the right direction.

We've just had a 3 game winning streak...well.....right up until they decided victory is overrated! A 3 game winning streak is un-achievable for as long as their current mental drought continues imo.
Mattys methods are starting to cause me concern, though i'm fully aware that he is not the reason for our addiction to defeat.

As for Konrad. I love this guy! I love knowing that given half a chance, he would die trying to bring our team success. He has the strength, passion and loyalty that this team dearly needs. He is FAR from our only error-prone player, but he is by FAR our greatest attacking weapon...when used properly! I personally would rather endure more heart-in-my-mouth moments from Konrad, than see his head & heart screwed with being taught lessons that others are exempt from. If there's one player in this team that MUST be persisted with, I truly believe he is it. Short term pain....long term gain! It's not like our season hinges on whether or not he makes a mistake aye.
Not to mention what placing Krisnan, Konrad, Ngani on the naughty mat does to the mental attitudes of the rest of the team. Most of our team are bro's not contracted acquaintances, but, that's enough about that.

I bet Aunty Ivan likes this weeks team and knows just how to defeat it.

I guess because we are running short of fullbacks, if Fisiahi injured that will mean Tuimavave, and that isn't the best either
It's just occurred to me, is this why Carlos has been chosen over Konrad? So that if The Fish goes down injured (not long ago his name was glassiiahi) we have fullback cover?

By all accounts Luke Walsh had a very good game against the Storm, goal kicking excluded. The chances of him have 2 good games in a row are not high, but not impossible either. We have been steadily improving, despite the final result, with our structure, both in attack and in defence. I must say we do look a little less threatening in attack without Konrad. The effort cannot be faulted though IMO and eventually it has to show in our results. I think it will start this weekend. I don't think we will win well, but I do think we will win.

I also hope we are giving Elliott the time to develop this team and not going to make knee jerk reactions at the end of the season whatever the results are. I like what Penrith are doing. They are working to a 5 year plan, they are straight up about that (I don't particularly like the coach and some of the players they are signing but I respect the plan). I think we are further developed than they are and so i hope we are working to something like a 3 year plan.

What about Godinet? Hasn't he played a number of games at the back for the Vulcans?

Some of us here aren't even waiting til the end of the season for that by the looks of things. Development is obviously a foreign concept to some fans. Hell, it's been a foreign concept to the club, so it's hardly surprising.

I suspect ME wouldn't want to risk Godinet there again

Sounds like Elliot is trying to instill responsibility and maturity in Hurrell's game.

Hmmm sounds like needless mind games to me- kids head must be spinning- gets dropped, then bought back- then they don't play him anyway- then he's dropped again and now he's captain- strange way to go about developing a player IMO

On the bare surface, perhaps. But I'm sure he gets more information and justification than we do.

I hope ME's plan with Konnie works because he should be perservered with and having cover for fullback does explain why Carlos is there this week but it was only 3 weeks ago in a news conference that ME was steadfastly staring back at the camera saying that "he (Konnie) would not learn how to be an NRL grade player by playing for the Vulcans and that the only way to get up to speed and gain experience was to play in first grade and get that experience"
I always get nervous and twitchy when the coach gets nervous and twitchy.

See what you mean, for me the key is why Hurrell didn't play against Bulldogs. ME must be working to a plan with him, surely. I presume Tuimavave will not be there too long being consistent with ME's development of younger players. I hope Henry goes back to 2nd row when Neilson returns. Ben there as 'a safe set of hands' at the moment. Also to be fair to CT, he had a reasonable game last week. I suspect Cleary will be sending runners his way this week. Also the fact that he can play fullback he is a sensible selection given Fisiahi's history.

TBH I would have rather have seen Laumape at fullback for the Vulcans. He looks like he could handle it skills wise. Just another option, standoff could be another place for him. However, those things can wait, lets develop him as a centre first I suppose.

I would rather have Matagi on the bench than Taylor. Taylor will be trying to impress his new employers and will look for the miracle rush out of the line and miss his man trick. Matulino and/or Lillyman can cover 2nd row.

Didn't ME say he sees Carlos as a long-term prospect at centre?
