Under the British (and NZ) laws of libel anybody is allowed to express an honestly held opinion.

Where the problems start for forums is where people express opinions that are not honestly held. They do it to cause trouble and start flame wars, and it pisses the other posters off big time.

BTW there are many users here who dont post but rate posts offtopic/inappropriate. Soon those buttons will disappear for non posting posters as it all adds extra work removing them. In these cases many use it to 'dislike' a post and just adds work to remove it. In some cases legitimate posts by users have been automatically hidden due to these 'negative' ratings. And people who continue to give those ratings as a means of disagreeing will have their ratings authorisation completely removed. So please...if you accidently give offtopic/inappropriate ratings, please fix it by clicking correct button. Its a small subset of users most of whom never post, 99.5% of users who post on this site wont be impacted (except those who have whinged about moderation on this thread...jokes!).

I've seen this as well it will be people that don't post randomly marking relevant posts off topic or harmless post inappropriate.

Is it worth upping the limit from two up a bit?
Or can there be a balance as some that get hidden end up having 5-10 positive reactions but are marked negative twice and get hidden.

I think the idea of the forum self regulating itself a bit is a good one but like you and other mods have mentioned a lot of people use the those buttons as a dislike button or who knows what for with the off topic posts.

The game day threads often have posts marked off topic which are relevant to the game in some cases listing the score and various points and how things worked out. Not sure how things directly listing events from the game can be off topic unless someone hasn't watched it.

The other funny ones are the sack the coach threads. Someone explains their reasons for sacking the coach and it's off topic.

Confirming that the above has now been implemented.

All users will be able to LIKE a post.
All users who have posted atleast once will be able to rate a post as FUNNY.
All users who have posted a certain number (around ~30-50) will be able to rate a post as INAPPROPRIATE or OFFTOPIC.

Users who continue to rate a post as INAPPROPRIATE or OFFTOPIC for posts they disagree with will have their ability to rate posts taken away.

We didnt want to do this, but there has been a large influx of users who have started marking posts as inappropriate or offtopic as a way to negate a persons opinion, in some cases causing their posts to be hidden.

To reiterate:


Like/Agree = If you like or agree with the post.
Funny = If you found the post to be funny.
Inappropriate = Post is offensive/spam/personal attack/illegal
Offtopic = Post is totally offtopic and dragging the discussion to a totally new tangent.

Users are welcome to create a new thread, if they want to discuss something that may be considered offtopic if they post it in a current thread. In most cases a thead will already exist, so please use the search feature.

If in doubt, contact a mod.
