Talk about dream debuts.

Kiwi prop Poasa Faamausili hopes to kick on for the Roosters after scoring with his second touch of the ball in his first NRL appearance.

He was one of three Roosters players to score on debut - setting a NRL record.

The 22-year-old Faamausili came off the interchange bench against the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday and ran a splendid line to score by the posts in the 57th minute after hurtling onto a deft pass from Kurt Baptiste.

Faamausili described his first taste of first grade football as "unreal".

"I was just hoping to get some strong carries, but I got a try because of Kurty's good ball," he told the Roosters' website.

"I was just grateful for it."

A week earlier, Faamausili had been playing for the Wyong Roos, the Roosters' feeder team in the New South Wales Cup.

The former Junior Kiwis forward said he was "grateful for the coaches backing me" in his step-up to the top grade.

"Everyone was really welcoming, [they were] making it really simple and making it basic and easier out there.

"I'm hoping to get some more games in first grade and go on from there."

Faamausili played 18 minutes and made five runs totalling 43m and a line break.

He made five tackles and missed two.

Auckland-born Faamausili was a Glenora Bears junior before being recruited by the Roosters.

He played in the age-group grades for the Sydney club. He was part of their SG Ball 18 years grade title winning team which played in the Rugby League Commonwealth Championships as Australia's representative.

Faamausili was a Junior Kiwi in 2016 and is a former New South Wales under-20s representative.

He made his NSW Cup for Wyong last year and has so far played 36 matches and scored six tries for the Central Coast side.

Sean O'Sullivan, 19, and Paul Momirovski, who turns 22 on Thursday, were the other Roosters rookies to score.

They are the first trio - without previous first grade experience - to score on their NRL debuts.

Longtime rugby league writer Neil Cadigan, writing on roosters.com.au said three Brisbane Broncos - Wally Lewis, Brett Le Man and Joe Kilroy scored in the Brisbane Broncos' opening first grade game in 1988 but all had had premier grade experience in the Queensland competition.

O'Sullivan said he was over the moon at his try-scoring feat.

"It's something (three debutants scoring tries) we'll laugh about in the next couple of years. It was awesome to debut with guys you've played the whole year with up at Wyong," he told roosters.com.au.

Poasa Faamausili's loan deal to Warriors shows Roosters are 'putting the game first'

Poasa Faamausili, pictured scoring on his NRL debut in 2018, is tipped to join the Warriors on a month-long loan from the Roosters.

He's potentially only one injury away from playing for the Roosters on Friday night but seven days later Poasa Faamausili will most likely become Warrior #244.

Faamausili — who scored on debut for the two-time NRL champions — will join the Warriors in a groundbreaking four-week loan deal on Sunday and will be eligible to play against the Penrith Panthers in round four.

The NRL has backflipped on the idea of the Gosford-based Warriors being allowed loan players to cover a middle forwards injury crisis after initially turning down the club's request two weeks ago.

Faamausili remains in the Roosters' 21-man squad for Friday's much-anticipated clash against South Sydney but looks unlikely to play — especially with former Warrior Siosiua Taukeiaho firming as a chance to overcome a hamstring injury.

The Warriors have been in desperate need of reinforcements of big men after injuries to middle forwards Leeson Ah Mau, Bunty Afoa, Jackson Frei and Jazz Tevaga.

Warriors boss Cameron George told Stuff his club was "very appreciative" of what the Roosters, especially coach Trent Robinson and chief executive Joe Kelly, have done for the club in helping to get the deal across the line.

"They don't have too, but it just demonstrates they are putting the game first and helping us out through a pretty challenging time," George said.

Cameron George is grateful to the Roosters and the NRL for making the loan deal a reality.

The initial loan period is set for a minimum of four weeks but George said it will remain flexible for both sides.

"It's set in for four weeks and then obviously if both parties want to review that they can."

But George said on the other side of the coin, the Roosters could call the former Junior Kiwi back within those initial four weeks if the defending premiers were hit with a succession of injuries to their propping stocks.

Faamausili, 24, has played 14 first grade games for the Rooster since his debut in 2018.

He played 11 minutes off the bench in the Roosters' round two 9-8 loss to the Manly Sea Eagles in March.

The Warriors are also grateful to the NRL for reconsidering the club's request, George said.

Faamausili, a cousin of former Penrith Panthers brothers Tony and Frank Puletua, was open to the deal because he knows he's ready to be playing first-grade week in and week out, Robinson said.

Faamausili, who is 1.88m and 108kg, has been stuck behind fellow New Zealanders Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Isaac Liu and Taukeiaho in the Roosters' propping pecking order.

"But he's an NRL player ready to play and he's not currently in our squad," Robinson told reporters on Friday.

"We believe it's a benefit for us. Obviously New Zealand (Warriors) as well, but for us, [it's] to get a high quality player out there and playing."

Warriors coach Stephen Kearney was also thankful to the Roosters for loaning a much-needed big man.

"He'll add real value to our squad and we're certainly looking forward to welcoming him into the group here in Terrigal," Kearney said.

He confirmed despite the signing of former Raiders forward Jack Murchie, the club still has one roster spot in the top 30 to fill.

The Auckland-born Faamausili attended Waitakere College and was a Glenora Bears junior before being recruited by the Roosters.

He played in the age-group grades for the Sydney club. He was part of their SG Ball 18 years grade title-winning team which played in the Rugby League Commonwealth Championships as Australia's representative.

Poasa can give Warriors sudden impact as more injuries strike
Chris Kennedy NRL.com Reporter

Poasa Faamausili on the charge for the Roosters against the Warriors at the NRL Nines in Perth.

Poasa Faamausili has made an immediate impact on Stephen Kearney and the Warriors coach expects him to do the same for the team on the field on Friday.

Faamausili has joined the club on a short-term loan deal from the Roosters and will make his club debut against Penrith.

"He's settled in fantastic," Kearney said. "Absolutely [he'll play]; we didn't have him come into camp to not play any time for us.

"He actually went to school with a couple of the boys in the group – David Fusitua, Nate Roache, Isaiah Papalii, he had a bit to do with Rog (Tuivasa-Sheck) at the Roosters early days, Jack Murchie, Josh Curran. I think he feels pretty comfortable the way he turned up to training on Monday.

"You can see he's come from a great system in the Roosters, all the detail around his football he does really well. The boys enjoy having him in the camp. I think he'll fit in really well."

Kearney won't have any of his unavailable players returning this week but hopes for a few back in round five from the group which includes Jazz Tevaga, Lachlan Burr, David Fusitua and Agnatius Paasi.

Loan player Poasa Faamausili’s time with the Vodafone Warriors has ended with the Sydney Roosters recalling him after a spate of injuries in their seventh-round NRL clash against St George Illawarra last night.

The Roosters agreed late last month to allow Faamausili to join the Vodafone Warriors on loan.

It was agreed this week that the Auckland-born front rower’s stint would be extended but injuries to four Roosters forwards last night – Boyd Cordner, Isaac Liu, Victor Radley and Sam Verrills – led to Faamausili’s recall today.

He made the first NRL start of his career against the Melbourne Storm in Sydney last night, his fourth appearance for the Vodafone Warriors.

“We really appreciate what the Roosters did for us and thank Poasa for his efforts,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“Having Poasa on loan was mutually beneficial for both clubs. We’re sad to see him leave the group but he goes back far more ready to play after getting valuable game time over the last month.

“Poasa is an absolute gentleman and pleasure to have around. He’ll always be remembered as one of us.”

Faamausili has played 18 NRL matches.

Would definitely be a good signing if we could get him
But after a bit of time at our club i wouldn't be surprised if
He was a bit apprehensive.

Big thanks to the big man!!!! Hope your not scared by this experience, and one day you want to come home? If I were coach I'd have you back in a heart beat!

Dont like the loan deals personally. He’s going to know all our plays and it could be the difference when we next play the Roosters😋

Great player, big future. Shows the difference a top development system and coaching makes.

245. POASA FAAMAUSILI

Poasa Faamausili was the first of our loan players to play 1st grade after the Sydney Roosters agreed to loan him to us after a spate of injuries to the Warriors team that was locked down due to covid.

Faamausili was recalled to the Roosters after their own injuries started to mount up.

On 15 October 2020, Faamausili signed a two-year deal with the St. George Illawarra Dragons.

On 17th October 2022 Faamausili was signed by the Dolphins for the 2023 season...

The Dolphins continue to build forward power for their 2023 NRL entry with the signing of Dragons’ prop Poasa Faamausili.

The 26-year-old has 39 matches of NRL experience under his belt for the Roosters, Warriors and Dragons since making his top-grade debut in 2018.

He will add further depth to an impressive middle forward roster for the Dolphins that already includes Jesse Bromwich, Mark Nicholls, Tom Gilbert, Ray Stone and Jarrod Wallace.

When you add internationals of the calibre of Felise Kaufusi and Kenny Bromwich at second row, the Dolphins will be taking a physical presence into their tilt at the NRL competition.
Dolphins’ chief executive Terry Reader said Faamausili would add another strong option to the club’s forwards rotation.

“One thing we have tried to do is make certain the Dolphins will have a forward pack that will compete with any other in the NRL,” said Reader.

“Our coach Wayne Bennett is a big believer in that and it has been part of our long-term strategy from the very first moment we started building our roster.

“Poasa will add more depth to that positional group on our list and we congratulate him on being part of the first ever Dolphins’ squad that will begin pre-season training in just a few weeks’ time.”

Identified by the Roosters as a teenager, Faamausili played three years of the NYC under-20s competition for the club, including being part of the 2016 premiership-winning team.

Faamausili started the grand final in the front row in a team that included current NRL players Joseph Manu, Victor Radley and Nat Butcher.

He made his NRL debut two years later for the Roosters and played 24 NRL matches for them before being loaned to the COVID-impacted Warriors team for four games in 2020.

He has played 11 matches for the Dragons since signing there at the start of the 2021 season.
